    The duration of the outdoor rearing period of pigs influences Iberian ham characteristics

    peer-reviewedThe effect of outdoor rearing duration (75 v 50 days) and rearing system (outdoor v indoor based systems) of Iberian pigs on the chemical composition (fatty acid composition of fat and intramuscular fat, moisture, salt, pigment concentrations and water activity of lean meat), the instrumental colour (CIEL*a*b* system) and the sensory characteristics (descriptive analysis) of dry-cured hams were investigated. The fatty acid composition of subcutaneous fat was weakly affected by outdoor rearing duration, but greatly affected by rearing system with the indoor hams showing larger proportion of saturated fatty acids than outdoor rearing. Rearing system also affected L* of subcut aneous fat (the indoor hams were lighter than the outdoor ones). The instrumental colour of lean was only affected by outdoor rearing duration (scores for a* and its derived variables were larger in the long-outdoor group than in the short-outdoor one). The effect of outdoor rearing duration on the sensory characteristics of Iberian hams was marked, 13 sensory characteristics being affected. Among them, odour intensity, flavour intensity, and flavour persistence were greater in the long-outdoor hams than in the short-outdoor ones, whereas these characteristics were not affected by rearing system. However, rearing system also had a large effect influencing 12 sensory characteristics

    Facilities improvement for sustainability of existing public office buildings in Nigeria

    The study examined the building design features of a cosmopolitan public office building in Abuja. The features were classified into Spatial Plan, Structure and Facilities, to determine which of the 3 variables requires urgent sustainable improvement from end-users' perspective in existing public office buildings in developing countries. A quantitative approach was adopted while the research strategy involved survey and direct observation. Post-Occupancy Evaluation was used to collect the survey data on a massive public office building in Nigeria, which reflected the quota system and federal character of the nation, as study area. A total of 339 useable questionnaires were retrieved from the respondents, and the analysis conducted revealed that facilities requires the most urgent improvement for sustainability.     Embedding a Native State into a Random Heteropolymer Model: The Dynamic Approach

    We study a random heteropolymer model with Langevin dynamics, in the supersymmetric formulation. Employing a procedure similar to one that has been used in static calculations, we construct an ensemble in which the affinity of the system for a native state is controlled by a "selection temperature" T0. In the limit of high T0, the model reduces to a random heteropolymer, while for T0-->0 the system is forced into the native state. Within the Gaussian variational approach that we employed previously for the random heteropolymer, we explore the phases of the system for large and small T0. For large T0, the system exhibits a (dynamical) spin glass phase, like that found for the random heteropolymer, below a temperature Tg. For small T0, we find an ordered phase, characterized by a nonzero overlap with the native state, below a temperature Tn \propto 1/T0 > Tg. However, the random-globule phase remains locally stable below Tn, down to the dynamical glass transition at Tg. Thus, in this model, folding is rapid for temperatures between Tg and Tn, but below Tg the system can get trapped in conformations uncorrelated with the native state. At a lower temperature, the ordered phase can also undergo a dynamical glass transition, splitting into substates separated by large barriers.Comment: 19 pages, revtex, 6 figure

    Charge and Orbital Ordering and Spin State Transition Driven by Structural Distortion in YBaCo_2O_5

    We have investigated electronic structures of antiferromagnetic YBaCo_2O_5 using the local spin-density approximation (LSDA) + U method. The charge and orbital ordered insulating ground state is correctly obtained with the strong on-site Coulomb interaction. Co^{2+} and Co^{3+} ions are found to be in the high spin (HS) and intermediate spin (IS) state, respectively. It is considered that the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition is responsible for the ordering phenomena and the spin states of Co ions. The large contribution of the orbital moment to the total magnetic moment indicates that the spin-orbit coupling is also important in YBaCo_2O_5.Comment: 4 pages including 4 figures, Submitted to Phys.     Perturbative and nonperturbative contributions to the strange quark asymmetry in the nucleon

    There are two mechanisms for the generation of an asymmetry between the strange and anti-strange quark distributions in the nucleon: nonperturbative contributions originating from nucleons fluctuating into virtual baryon-meson pairs such as ΛK\Lambda K and ΣK\Sigma K, and perturbative contributions arising from gluons splitting into strange and anti-strange quark pairs. While the nonperturbative contributions are dominant in the large-xx region, the perturbative contributions are more significant in the small-xx region. We calculate this asymmetry taking into account both nonperturbative and perturbative contributions, thus giving a more accurate evaluation of this asymmetry over the whole domain of xx. We find that the perturbative contributions are generally a few times larger in magnitude than the nonperturbative contributions, which suggests that the best region to detect this asymmetry experimentally is in the region 0.02<x<0.030.02 < x < 0.03. We find that the asymmetry may have more than one node, which is an effect that should be taken into account, e.g. for parameterizations of the strange and anti-strange quark distributions used in global analysis of parton distributions.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, figures comparing theoretical calculations with NNPDF global analysis added, accepted for publication in EPJ

    Measurements of spin rotation parameter A in pion-proton elastic scattering at 1.62 GeV/c

    The ITEP-PNPI collaboration presents the results of the measurements of the spin rotation parameter A in the elastic scattering of positive and negative pions on protons at P_beam = 1.62 GeV/c. The setup included a longitudinally-polarized proton target with superconductive magnet, multiwire spark chambers and a carbon polarimeter with thick filter. Results are compared to the predictions of partial wave analyses. The experiment was performed at the ITEP proton synchrotron, Moscow.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. To be published in Phys. Lett.

    The possibility of constructing charged particles in gauge theories has long been the subject of debate. In the context of QED we have shown how to construct operators which have a particle description. In this paper we further support this programme by showing how the screening interactions arise between these charges.     Determination of the high-twist contribution to the structure function xF3νNxF^{\nu N}_3

    We extract the high-twist contribution to the neutrino-nucleon structure function xF3(ν+νˉ)NxF_3^{(\nu+\bar{\nu})N} from the analysis of the data collected by the IHEP-JINR Neutrino Detector in the runs with the focused neutrino beams at the IHEP 70 GeV proton synchrotron. The analysis is performed within the infrared renormalon (IRR) model of high twists in order to extract the normalization parameter of the model. From the NLO QCD fit to our data we obtained the value of the IRR model normalization parameter Λ32=0.69±0.37 (exp)±0.16 (theor) GeV2\Lambda^2_{3}=0.69\pm0.37~({\rm exp})\pm0.16~({\rm theor})~{\rm GeV}^2. We also obtained Λ32=0.36±0.22 (exp)±0.12 (theor) GeV2\Lambda^2_{3}=0.36\pm0.22~({\rm exp})\pm0.12~({\rm theor})~{\rm GeV}^2 from a similar fit to the CCFR data.
