Axons in Cat Visual Cortex are Topologically Self-similar

The axonal arbors of the different types of neocortical and thalamic neurons appear highly dissimilar when viewed in conventional 2D reconstructions. Nevertheless, we have found that their one-dimensional metrics and topologies are surprisingly similar. To discover this, we analysed the axonal branching pattern of 39 neurons (23 spiny, 13 smooth and three thalamic axons) that were filled intracellularly with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) during in vivo experiments in cat area 17. The axons were completely reconstructed and translated into dendrograms. Topological, fractal and Horton-Strahler analyses indicated that axons of smooth and spiny neurons had similar complexity, length ratios (a measure of the relative increase in the length of collateral segments as the axon branches) and bifurcation ratios (a measure of the relative increase in the number of collateral segments as the axon branches). We show that a simple random branching model (Galton-Watson process) predicts with reasonable accuracy the bifurcation ratio, length ratio and collateral length distribution of the axonal arbor

Global Strings and the Aharonov-Bohm Effect

When a fermion interacts with a global vortex or cosmic string a solenoidal "gauge" field is induced. This results in a non-trivial scattering cross-section. For scalars and non-relativistic fermions the cross-section is similar to that of Aharonov and Bohm, but with corrections. A cosmological example is compared to one in liquid He3^{3}-A and important differences are discovered.Comment: 11 pages, DAMTP 93-5

Enhancement of infectivity of a non-syncytium inducing HIV-1 by sCD4 and by human antibodies that neutralize syncytium inducing IIIV-1

Enhancement of virus infectivity after sCD4 treatment has been documented for SIVagm and HIV-2. It has been suggested that a similar phenomenon may play a role in HIV-1 infection. In the present study we have analysed biological activities of virus neutralizing polyclonal and monoclonal human antibodies and of sCD4, towards HIV-1 chimeras with envelope proteins derived from one donor, which display different biological phenotypes. The antibodies, which recognize the V3 and/or the CD4 binding domains of the glycoproteins of these viruses and also sCD4 showed different levels of virus neutralizing activity toward the syncytium inducing HIV-1 strains. In contrast, they all dramatically enhanced the infectivity of an HIV-1 chimera with an envelope glycoprotein displaying the non-syncytium-inducing phenotype. Given the relatively conserved nature of non-syncytium-inducing HIV-1 surface glycoproteins early after infection, these data suggest a major role for antibody mediated enhancement of virus infectivity in the early pathogenesis of HIV-1 infection

Deconstructing Non-Abelian Gauge Theories at One Loop

Deconstruction of 5D Yang-Mills gauge theories is studied in next-to-leading order accuracy. We calculate one-loop corrections to the mass spectrum of the non-linear gauged sigma-model, which is the low energy effective theory of the deconstructed theory. Renormalization is carried out following the standard procedure of effective field theories. The relation between the radius of the compactified fifth dimension and the symmetry breaking scale of the non-linear sigma-model is modified by radiative corrections. We demonstrate that one can match the low lying spectrum of the gauge boson masses of the effective 4D gauged non-linear sigma-model to the Kaluza-Klein modes of the 5D theory at one-loop accuracy

The curvature of F2p(x,Q2)F_2^p(x,Q^2) as a probe of the range of validity of perturbative QCD evolutions in the small-xx region

    Get PDF
Perturbative NLO and NNLO QCD evolutions of parton distributions are studied, in particular in the (very) small-xx region, where they are in very good agreement with all recent precision measurements of F2p(x,Q2)F_2^p(x,Q^2). These predictions turn out to be also rather insensitive to the specific choice of the factorization scheme (MSˉ\bar{\rm MS} or DIS). A characteristic feature of perturbative QCD evolutions is a {\em{positive}} curvature of F2pF_2^p which increases as xx decreases. This perturbatively stable prediction provides a sensitive test of the range of validity of perturbative QCD.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables; minor corrections, to appear in EPJ

Global QCD Analysis and the CTEQ Parton Distributions

    Get PDF
The CTEQ program for the determination of parton distributions through a global QCD analysis of data for various hard scattering processes is fully described. A new set of distributions, CTEQ3, incorporating several new types of data is reported and compared to the two previous sets of CTEQ distributions. Comparison with current data is discussed in some detail. The remaining uncertainties in the parton distributions and methods to further reduce them are assessed. Comparisons with the results of other global analyses are also presented.Comment: (Change in Latex style only: 2up style removed since many don't have it.) 35 pages, 23 figures separately submitted as uuencoded compressed ps-file; Michigan State Report # MSU-HEP/41024 and CTEQ 40

Layer dynamics of a freely standing smectic-A film

We study the hydrodynamics of a freely-standing smectic-A film in the isothermal, incompressible limit theoretically by analyzing the linearized hydrodynamic equations of motion with proper boundary conditions. The dynamic properties for the system can be obtained from the response functions for the free surfaces. Permeation is included and its importance near the free surfaces is discussed. The hydrodynamic mode structure for the dynamics of the system is compared with that of bulk systems. We show that to describe the dynamic correlation functions for the system, in general, it is necessary to consider the smectic layer displacement uu and the velocity normal to the layers, vzv_z, together. Finally, our analysis also provides a basis for the theoretical study of the off-equilibrium dynamics of freely-standing smectic-A films.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figure

Constraints on the Charged Higgs Sector from the Tevatron Collider Data on Top Quark Decay

    Get PDF
The top quark data in the lepton plus τ\tau channel offers a viable probe for the charged Higgs boson signal. We analyse the recent Tevatron collider data in this channel to obtain a significant limit on the H±H^\pm mass in the large tanβ\tan\beta region.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX file; 2 figures included (PS files
