Actions of higher-rank lattices on free groups
If is a semisimple Lie group of real rank at least 2 and is an
irreducible lattice in , then every homomorphism from to the outer
automorphism group of a finitely generated free group has finite image.Comment: 11 pages, no figures. Final version. To appear in Compositio Mat
The Effectiveness of State and Local Regulation of Handguns: A Statistical Analysis
One aspect of the continuing debate over weapons control, apart from Constitutional issues, is whether legislation is inherently capable of reducing crime and deaths by shooting. The opponents of increased control, tacitly admitting that empirical evidence is one means for measuring the effect of weapons regulation, have contended that [e]xpert opinion and compelling evidence seem to indicate that the amount or kind of crime in a community is not substantially affected by the relative ease with which a person can obtain a firearm. National Rifle Association of America, The Gun Law Problem 10. In the following study the authors employ data analysis techniques to examine the efficacy of state and municipal controls on handguns. They conclude that many lives would be saved if all states increased their level of control to that of New Jersey, the state having the most stringent gun control laws

Efficient Aggregation of Panel Qualitative Survey Data
Qualitative business survey data are used widely to provide indicators of economic activity ahead of the publication of official data. Traditional indicators exploit only aggregate survey information, namely the proportions of respondents who report âupâ and âdownâ. This paper examines disaggregate or firm-level survey responses. It considers how the responses of the individual firms should be quantified and combined if the aim is to produce an early indication of official output data. Having linked firmsâ categorical responses to official data using ordered discrete choice models, the paper proposes a statistically efficient means of combining the disparate estimates of aggregate output growth which can be constructed from the responses of individual firms. An application to firm-level survey data from the Confederation of British Industry shows that the proposed indicator can provide early estimates of output growth more accurately than traditional indicators.Survey Data; Indicators; Quantification; Forecasting; Forecast Combination
Low-frequency vibration environment for five Shuttle missions
The Microgravity Science and Applications Division's (MSAD) program to record and analyze the Shuttle's vibration environment is reviewed. This program provides microgravity science investigators with time and frequency analyses of the acceleration environment during their experiments' operation. Information is also provided for future investigators on the expected Shuttle vibration environment. As background, the two major elements of the program are discussed, the Space Acceleration Measurement System (SAMS) and the Acceleration Characterization and Analysis Project (ACAP). A comparison of the acceleration measurements from five Shuttle missions is discussed
Pion Photoproduction Amplitude Relations in the 1/N_c Expansion
We derive expressions for pion photoproduction amplitudes in the 1/N_c
expansion of QCD, and obtain linear relations directly from this expansion that
relate electromagnetic multipole amplitudes at all energies. The leading-order
relations in 1/N_c compare favorably with available data, while the
next-to-leading order relations seem to provide only a small improvement.
However, when resonance parameters are compared directly, the agreement at
O(1/N_c) or O(1/N_c^2) is impressive.Comment: 19 pages, ReVTeX, 50 eps files combine into 5 compound figure
The Finite Size Error in Many-body Simulations with long-Ranged Interactions
We discuss the origin of the finite size error of the energy in many-body
simulation of systems of charged particles and we propose a correction based on
the random phase approximation at long wave lengths. The correction comes from
contributions mainly determined by the organized collective oscillations of the
interacting system. Finite size corrections, both on kinetic and potential
energy, can be calculated within a single simulation. Results are presented for
the electron gas and silicon.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PRL; corrected typo
