Caracterización de la microestructura de una aleación de Ti libre de Ni con memoria de forma y bajo módulo para aplicaciones biomédicas ante diferentes velocidades de enfriamiento
En aquest projecte s’ha caracteritzat una aleació de titani sense níquel disenyada per tenir un baix mòdul elàstic i/o memòria de forma, destinada a ser utilitzada per la creació d’implants biomèdics. La aleació va ser dissenyada per Marta González per una tesis actualment en curs.
S’ha realitzat un estudi de l’art sobre materials similars ja estudiats al llarg de la história en implantología, amb l’objectiu d’entendre i justificar l’efecte de la transformació martensítica en les propietats del material, així com la influència de la fase ω en aquestes propietats i transformacions.
Asociada a aquesta justificació de les propietats del materia es planteja també la validació del mètode amb el que s’ha dissenyat el material i els diferents mètodes experimentals utilitzats al laboratori per la caracterització del material.
Finalment, els resultats de cadascun dels mètodes realitzats, entre els que destaquen la nanoindentació instrumentada i la microscopia de transmissió electrònica, a través de la seva discusió i validació mostren que la aleació objecte d’estudi es una aleació amb gran potencial en el sector biomèdic degut al seu baix módul elàstic i el seu aparent apantallament de carregues
The devil is in the details: exploring how functionally distinct round goby is among native fish in the Baltic Sea
Understanding the characteristics and conditions that make non-indigenous species (NIS) successful at establishing in recipient communities is a key in determining their potential impacts on native species, as well as to improve management actions such as prevention of future invasions. The round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) is one of the most widespread non-indigenous fish species in the Northern Hemisphere, including the coastal zones of the Baltic Sea. The impacts of round goby in the Baltic Sea are pronounced and multifaceted, yet our knowledge regarding the underlying assembly processes determining its establishment is limited. To overcome this knowledge gap, we applied a trait-based approach to assess the degree of niche overlap and functional (trait) similarity between round goby and native fish species in coastal areas from the Baltic Sea, based on the functional distinctiveness metric. Our results show that round goby is generally quite similar (or not dissimilar) to the native fish of the regional species pool, at least in terms of its overall trait composition. Conversely, round goby demonstrates pronounced differences compared to the native community in its display of parental care and territorial behaviour. Such differences in individual traits could play an important role in round goby’s invasion success in the Baltic Sea, including its interactions with native species (e.g. competition). Our results and their potential implications may be highly relevant for conservation and management if integrated within existing risk assessment tools for biological invasions in order to prioritise and enhance the effectiveness of preventative actions towards the expansion of round goby
Predicting reasoner performance on ABox intensive OWL 2 EL ontologies
In this article, the authors introduce the notion of ABox intensity in the context of predicting reasoner performance to improve the representativeness of ontology metrics, and they develop new metrics that focus on ABox features of OWL 2 EL ontologies. Their experiments show that taking into account the intensity through the proposed metrics contributes to overall prediction accuracy for ABox intensive ontologies

EPHA2 mutations with oncogenic characteristics in squamous cell lung cancer and malignant pleural mesothelioma.
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) are thoracic malignancies with very poor prognosis and limited treatment options. It is an established fact that most of the solid tumors have overexpression of EPHA2 receptor tyrosine kinase. EPHA2 is known to exhibit opposing roles towards cancer progression. It functions in inhibiting cancer survival and migration via a ligand and tyrosine kinase dependent signaling (Y772). Whereas it is known to promote tumor progression and cell migration through a ligand-independent signaling (S897). We analyzed the expression profile and mutational status of the ephrin receptor A2 (EPHA2) in SCC and MPM cell lines and primary patient specimens. The EPHA2 receptor was found to be either overexpressed, mutated or amplified in SCC and MPM. In particular, the EPHA2 mutants A859D and T647M were interesting to explore, A859D Y772 dead mutant exhibited lower levels of phosphorylation at Y772 compared to T647M mutant. Molecular Dynamics simulations studies suggested that differential changes in conformation might form the structural basis for differences in the level of EPHA2 activation. Consequently, A859D mutant cells exhibited increased proliferation as well as cell migration compared to controls and T647M mutant. Kinomics analysis demonstrated that the STAT3 and PDGF pathways were upregulated whereas signaling through CBL was suppressed. Considered together, the present work has uncovered the oncogenic characteristics of EPHA2 mutations in SSC and MPM reinstating the dynamics of different roles of EPHA2 in cancer. This study also suggests that a combination of doxazosin and other EPHA2 inhibitors directed to inhibit the pertinent signaling components may be a novel therapeutic strategy for MPM and Non-small cell lung cancer patients who have either EPHA2 or CBL alterations
Guidelines for consistent reporting of exchanges/to nature within life cycle inventories (LCI)
Data availability and data quality are still critical factors for successful LCA work. The SETAC-Europe LCA Working Group ‘Data Availability and Data Quality' has therefore focused on ongoing developments toward a common data exchange format, public databases and accepted quality measures to find science-based solutions than can be widely accepted. A necessary prerequisite for the free flow and exchange of life cycle inventory (LCI) data and the comparability of LCIs is the consistent definition, nomenclature, and use of inventory parameters. This is the main subject of the subgroup ‘Recommended List of Exchanges' that presents its results and findings here: • Rigid parameter lists for LCIs are not practical; especially, compulsory lists of measurements for all inventories are counterproductive. Instead, practitioners should be obliged to give the rationale for their scientific choice of selected and omitted parameters. The standardized (not: mandatory!) parameter list established by the subgroup can help to facilitate this. • The standardized nomenclature of LCI parameters and the standardized list of measurement bases (units) for these parameters need not be appliedinternally (e.g. in LCA software), but should be adhered to inexternal communications (data for publication and exchange). Deviations need to be clearly stated. • Sum parameters may or may not overlap - misinterpretations in either direction introduce a bias of unknown significance in the subsequent life cycle impact assessments (LCIA). The only person who can discriminate unambiguously is the practitioner who measures or calculates such values. Therefore, a clear statement of independence or overlap is necessary for every sum parameter reported. • Sum parameters should be only used when the group of emissions as such is measured. Individually measured emission parameters should not be hidden in group or sum parameters. • Problematic substances (such as carcinogens, ozone depleting agents and the like) maynever be obscured in group emissions (together with less harmful substances or with substances of different environmental impact), butmust be determined and reported individually, as mentioned in paragraph 3.3 of this article. • Mass and energy balances should be carried out on a unit process level. Mass balances should be done on the level of the entire mass flow in a process as well as on the level of individual chemical elements. • Whenever possible, practitioners should try to fill data gaps with their knowledge of analogous processes, environmental expert judgements, mass balance calculations, worst case assumptions or similar estimation procedure
Managing Injuries of the Neck Trial (MINT) : design of a randomised controlled trial of treatments for whiplash associated disorders
Background: A substantial proportion of patients with whiplash injuries develop chronic
symptoms. However, the best treatment of acute injuries to prevent long-term problems is
uncertain. A stepped care treatment pathway has been proposed, in which patients are given advice
and education at their initial visit to the emergency department (ED), followed by review at three
weeks and physiotherapy for those with persisting symptoms. MINT is a two-stage randomised
controlled trial to evaluate two components of such a pathway: 1. use of The Whiplash Book versus
usual advice when patients first attend the emergency department; 2. referral to physiotherapy
versus reinforcement of advice for patients with continuing symptoms at three weeks.
Methods: Evaluation of the Whiplash Book versus usual advice uses a cluster randomised design
in emergency departments of eight NHS Trusts. Eligible patients are identified by clinicians in
participating emergency departments and are sent a study questionnaire within a week of their ED
attendance. Three thousand participants will be included. Patients with persisting symptoms three
weeks after their ED attendance are eligible to join an individually randomised study of
physiotherapy versus reinforcement of the advice given in ED. Six hundred participants will be
randomised. Follow-up is at 4, 8 and 12 months after their ED attendance. Primary outcome is the
Neck Disability Index (NDI), and secondary outcomes include quality of life and time to return to
work and normal activities. An economic evaluation is being carried out.
Conclusion: This paper describes the protocol and operational aspects of a complex intervention
trial based in NHS emergency and physiotherapy departments, evaluating two components of a
stepped-care approach to the treatment of whiplash injuries. The trial uses two randomisations,
