Modeling Helical Structures in Relativistic Jets

Many jets exhibit twisted helical structures. Where superluminal motions are detected, jet orientation and pattern/flow speed are considerably constrained. In this case modeling efforts can place strong limits on conditions in the jet and in the external environment. This can be done by modeling the spatial development of helical structures which are sensitively dependent on these conditions. Along an expanding jet this sensitivity manifests itself in predictable changes in pattern speed and observed wavelength. In general, twists of low frequency relative to the local resonant frequency are advected along the expanding jet into a region in which the twist frequency is high relative to the local resonant frequency. The wave speed can be very different in these two frequency regimes. Potential effects include helical twists with a nearly constant apparent wavelength, an apparent wavelength scaling approximately with the jet radius for up to two orders of magnitude of jet expansion, or multiple twist wavelengths with vastly different intrinsic scale and vastly different wave speeds that give rise to similar observed twist wavelengths but with very different observed motion. In this paper I illustrate the basic intrinsic and observed behavior of these structures and show how to place constraints on jet conditions in superluminal jets using the apparent structures and motions in the inner 3C 120 jet.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure

Multi-wavelength differential astrometry of the S5 polar cap sample

We report on the status of our S5 polar cap astrometry program. Since 1997 we have observed all the 13 radio sources of the complete S5 polar cap sample at the wavelengths of 3.6 cm, 2 cm and 7 mm. Images of the radio sources at 3.6 and 2 cm have already been published reporting morphological changes. Preliminary astrometric analyses have been carried out at three frequencies with precisions in the relative position determination ranging from 80 to 20 microarcseconds. We report also on the combination of our phase-delay global astrometry results with the microarcsecond-precise optical astrometry that will be provided by future space-based instruments.Comment: 2 pages. 1 figure. We present deep infrared (2.2μ2.2 \mum) imaging of the Galactic microquasars 1E1740-2942 and GRS 1758-258 using the Keck-I 10-meter telescope in June 1998. The observations were taken under excellent seeing conditions (\sim 0.45 \arcsec full-width half-maximum), making them exceptionally deep for these crowded fields. We used the USNO-A2.0 catalog to astrometrically calibrate the infrared images (along with an optical CCD image in the case of GRS 1758-258), providing independent frame ties to the known radio positions of the objects. For 1E1740-2942, we confirm potential candidates for the microquasar previously identified by Marti et al., and show that none of the objects near the microquasar have varied significantly from 1998 to 1999. For GRS 1758-258, our astrometry indicates a position shifted from previous reports of candidates for the microquasar. We find no candidates inside our 90% confidence radius to a 2σ2 \sigma limiting magnitude of Ks=20.3K_s = 20.3 mag. We discuss the implications of these results for the nature of the microquasar binary systems.Comment: To appear in the Astrophysical Journal; 15 pages, including 4 figure

Equation of State in Numerical Relativistic Hydrodynamics

Relativistic temperature of gas raises the issue of the equation of state (EoS) in relativistic hydrodynamics. We study the EoS for numerical relativistic hydrodynamics, and propose a new EoS that is simple and yet approximates very closely the EoS of the single-component perfect gas in relativistic regime. We also discuss the calculation of primitive variables from conservative ones for the EoS's considered in the paper, and present the eigenstructure of relativistic hydrodynamics for a general EoS, in a way that they can be used to build numerical codes. Tests with a code based on the Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) scheme are presented to highlight the differences induced by different EoS's.Comment: To appear in the ApJS September 2006, v166n1 issue. Obstetric care is a high-risk area in healthcare delivery, so it is essential to have up-to-date quantitative evidence in this area to inform policy decisions regarding these services. In light of this, the objective of this study is to investigate the incidence and economic burden of third and fourth-degree lacerations in the English National Health Service (NHS) using recent national data. We used coded inpatient data from Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) for the financial years from 2010/2011 to 2013/2014 for all females that gave birth during that period in the English NHS. Using HES, we used pre-existing safety indicator algorithms to calculate the incidence of third and fourth-degree obstetric tears and employed a propensity score matching method to estimate the excess length of stay and economic burden associated with these events. Observed rates per 1000 inpatient episodes in 2010/2011 and 2013/2014, respectively: Patient Safety Indicator-trauma during vaginal delivery with instrument (PSI 18)=84.16 and 91.24; trauma during vaginal delivery without instrument (PSI 19)=29.78 and 33.43; trauma during caesarean delivery (PSI 20)=3.61 and 4.56. Estimated overall (all PSIs) economic burden for 2010/2011=£10.7 million and for 2013/2014=£14.5 million, expressed in 2013/2014 prices. Despite many initiatives targeting the quality of maternity care in the NHS, the incidence of third and fourth-degree lacerations has increased during the observed period which signals that quality improvement efforts in obstetric care may not be reducing incidence rates. Our conservative estimates of the financial burden of these events appear low relative to total NHS expenditure for these years

EVN and MERLIN confirmation of the LS5039 jets

The microquasar nature of LS5039 was revealed by May 1999 VLBA+VLA observations showing a two-sided jet at milliarcsecond scales. Here we present follow-up interferometric observations carried out with the EVN and MERLIN at 5 GHz in March 2000. The obtained maps with both the EVN and MERLIN show a two-sided jet with a similar position angle to the previous VLBA+VLA map. The total length of the jet arms is ~60 mas in the EVN map and ~300 mas in the MERLIN map. A brightness and length asymmetry of the jets, compatible with the earlier observations, is also present in the maps. Overall, these observations confirm the existence of a two-sided jet structure in LS 5039 and seem to indicate their persistent nature.Comment: Proceedings of the 6th European VLBI Network Symposium, Ros E., Porcas R.W., Lobanov A.P., Zensus J.A. The Lotic Intersite Nitrogen Experiments: an example of successful ecological research collaboration

    Get PDF
Collaboration is an essential skill for modern ecologists because it brings together diverse expertise, viewpoints, and study systems. The Lotic Intersite Nitrogen eXperiments (LINX I and II), a 17-y research endeavor involving scores of early- to late-career stream ecologists, is an example of the benefits, challenges, and approaches of successful collaborative research in ecology. The scientific success of LINX reflected tangible attributes including clear scientific goals (hypothesis-driven research), coordinated research methods, a team of cooperative scientists, excellent leadership, extensive communication, and a philosophy of respect for input from all collaborators. Intangible aspects of the collaboration included camaraderie and strong team chemistry. LINX further benefited from being part of a discipline in which collaboration is a tradition, clear data-sharing and authorship guidelines, an approach that melded field experiments and modeling, and a shared collaborative goal in the form of a universal commitment to see the project and resulting data products through to completion
