Optimal search in interacting populations: Gaussian jumps versus Lévy flights
We investigated the relationships between search efficiency, movement strategy, and nonlocal communication in the biological context of animal foraging. We considered situations where the members of a population of foragers perform either Gaussian jumps or Lévy flights, and show that the search time is minimized when communication among individuals occurs at intermediate ranges, independently of the type of movement. Additionally, while Brownian strategies are more strongly influenced by the communication mechanism, Lévy flights still result in shorter overall search durations. © 2014 American Physical Society.R.M.-G. is supported by the JAEPredoc program of CSIC. Nonequilibrium Statistical Physics in Ecology: Vegetation Patterns, Animal Mobility and Temporal Fluctuations
This thesis focuses on the application of nonequilibrium statistical physics to different ecological problems. In the first part we study the formation of vegetation patterns in water-limited systems, emphasizing the role of nonlocal interactions among plants. In the second part we develop mathematical models to explain the collective searching behavior in some animal species, where individuals communicate among them. The objective of this chapter is to build the theoretical tools to study foraging behavior in Mongolian gazelles, which is the aim of the next chapter. Finally, the effect of environmental variability on the robustness and evolution of ecosystems is studied. Studying problems of different nature within the common framework provided by statistical physics we aim to show its relevant role as an interdisciplinary tool
The work presents a study of data protection legislation at the institution of
the Catholic Church and in particular in sororities and brotherhoods, carrying out an initial
analysis of the provenance and evolution of the subject matter and then apply it to the
aforementioned area. In this way we proceed to analyze the application of normative
changes on the reality of the Catholic Church by referencing and addressing those shocks we
have observed about the prevalence between civil and canonical legislation. Subsequently, a
contextualization of the world of sororities and brotherhoods is carried out to place the
reader about what they are and how organized to then develop a study on the most
interesting and conflicting aspects that can lead to friction points with civil law in the
actions carried out by sororities and brotherhoods as a result of their common and daily
The aim of this project is to analyse the dynamics of the commercial spin-based levitating top,
Levitron® , and to determine the conditions that allow the stable levitation. Firstly, the topic will
be introduced with a brief historical overview and a general description of the system. Earnshaw’s
theorem will be discussed in detail, in order to determine in which cases does not apply, being the
Levitron® one those. Following, the mathematical model of the top and the magnetic base will be
defined, making a series of hypotheses and symplifications in order to ease the following
mathematical formulations. In chapter 3 the differential equations of motion for the six degrees of
freedom model are obtained, using the formulation of the vectorial classical dynamics. These
equations are linearized at a given metastable equilibrium point, in order to study the linear
stability of the system and its natural frequencies. Once the linear system has been studied, the
complete system is solved numerically, varying the parameters and the initial conditions that define
it. Thus, the influence of this parameters in the trajectory is observed and the non-linear boundaries
of stability are calculated numerically. Finally, a last chapter is dedicated to summarize the results
obtained in the analysis, and to propose possible future additions to this theory.Universidad de Sevilla. Grado en Ingeniería Aeroespacia
Cajal´s achievements in the field of the development of dendritic arbors
13 páginas, 7 figuras. In 1909, Cajal published an up-dated version in French (Cajal, 1909-1911) of his main work Texture of the Nervous System of Man and Vertebrates (Cajal, 1899-1904), considered the most important book devoted to the nervous system. Owing that last year was the centenary of this publication, we decided to produce an article focused on Cajal´s description of the morphological changes that dendritic trees undergo during development. We will emphasize his brilliant hypotheses explaining the modelling of dendritic trees (the neurotropic hypothesis and the role of neuronal activity in the patterning of the dendritic trees), and the status of this topic in present day Neuroscience. Here, we will show original photographs taken from a selected collection of Cajal´s slides housed in the Cajal Museum (Instituto Cajal, CSIC, Madrid, Spain) illustrating the principal changes in neuronal morphology at different stages of development of the spinal cord, cerebellum and cerebral cortex. We will also discuss Cajal’s initial proposals regarding the influence of neurotropic substances (chemotactic hypothesis) and neural activity in the modelling of the dendritic tree, as well as the evidence that later confirmed these theories.P.
ABSTRACT
One of the most significant parameters for predicting the service life of reinforced concrete structures exposed to marine environment is the critical chloride concentration; this parameter is considered essential for initiating the reinforcement steel corrosion. The major challenge for the assessment of this value is the amount of factors which are involved in this measurement, such as the concrete properties and the type of reinforcing steel used. The use of different types of steel emerges from the necessity to find new materials that exhibit better corrosion performance in a variety of environments. There is a great quantity of data related to the mild steel rod (ASTM A 615), for this reason the main objective of this research was determine the critical chloride concentration for three different types of reinforcement, such as thermo-treated , galvanized and dual covering zinc-polymer steel. The research was conducted in a marine environment with a
laboratory control, using reinforced concrete specimens fabricated with water/cement ratios of 0.45 and 0.65.
These specimens was monitored through electrochemical tests such as the open circuit potential (OCP), the linear polarization resistance (LPR) and Electrochemical
Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). Additionally, the determination of the critical chloride concentration was performed with an automatic potentiometer and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) in the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). From the results of this
investigation a range of values for a critical chloride concentration as a function of multiple types of reinforcement steel is were obtained
