Changes in hydrodynamic, structural and geochemical properties in carbonate rock samples due to reactive transport

    Get PDF
Reactive transport plays an important role in the development of a wide range of both anthropic and natural processes affecting geological media. To predict the consequences of reactive transport processes on structural and hydrodynamic properties of a porous media at large time and spatial scales, numerical modeling is a powerful tool. Nevertheless, such models, to be realistic, need geochemical, structural and hydrodynamic data inputs representative of the studied reservoir or material. Here, we present an experimental study coupling traditional laboratory measurements and percolation experiments in order to obtain the parameters that define rock heterogeneity, which can be altered during the percolation of a reactive fluid. In order to validate the experimental methodology and identify the role of the initial heterogeneities on the localization of the reactive transport processes, we used three different limestones with different petrophysical characteristics. We tracked the changes of geochemical, structural and hydrodynamic parameters in these samples induced by the percolation of an acid fluid by measuring, before and after the percolation experiment, petrophysical and hydrodynamic properties of the rocks.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Information and Communication Technologies have led to a new way of life and, in particular, of socialization. The objective of this study is to analyse the image social media disseminate of news taken from digital newspapers, based on the opportunities and drawbacks attributed to smartphone use by teenagers. An essentially qualitative methodology was used, on a sample of 1704 news items published in digital newspapers. The results and conclusions show that smartphone use by teenagers improves development of their digital competence, presents new academic opportunities (through gamification or mobile learning) and provides them with digital tools for school and leisure. The widespread drawbacks reflect the effects of the device on the deterioration of health (dependence, stress, psychosocial problems) and emotions, thereby succinctly affecting academic performance. A noticeable increase of positive news about smartphones was published in the major newspapers in December, while that on its negative effects, in September.Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades | Ref. Soy protein enzymatic hydrolysis and polysaccharides interactions: differential performance on kinetic adsorption at air-water interface

    Get PDF
The objective of the work was to study the impact of soy protein hydrolysis on kinetic adsorption to the air-water interface and the effect of polysaccharides addition. Was used soy protein (SP) and theirs hydrolysates of 2% (H1) and 5.4% (H2) degree of hydrolysis. The polysaccharides (PS) used were a surface active one called E4M and a non-surface active one, lamda carrageenan (C). The dynamic surface pressure of interfacial films was evaluated with a drop tensiometer. In this contribution, we have determined the kinetic parameters of adsorption to the air-water interface which determined the penetration (Kp) and rearrangement (Kr) rates of SP, H1, H2 and PS, as well as their mixed systems. It was observed an increase of Kp and Kr when the protein were hydrolyzed (from SP to H1), however, when degree of hydrolysis progresses to H2 the parameters decreased again. In other hand, considerable differences were not found between these two PS studied concerning the Kp to air-water interface at these conditions. In spite of the different surface active nature of the PS, the proteins seem to control the behavior of the protein-PS interactions. However, when Kr of mixed systems was analyzed, the degree of hydrolysis and PS nature started to have a huge importance. Hence, it could be observed synergic or antagonic effects on Kr of biopolymers at liquid interface depending to the degree of hydrolysis of protein analyzed and the type of PS selected.CYTED through project 105PI0274CYCYT through grant AGL2007-60045Junta de Andalucía through grant PO6-AGR-01535Universidad de Buenos Aires, Agencia Nacional de Promoción Científica y Tecnológica (PICT 2008-1901) and Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas de la República Argentin

Encouraging the use of active-learning methodologies, both inside and outside the classroom by means of planned activities, is a key factor in effective learning, as well as being essential for students to achieve the goals set for each subject by making them responsible for their own learning. In this longitudinal and quantitative study, we describe the different active learning activities, such as Flipped Classroom, Design Thinking, Visual Thinking, and Project-Based Learning (PBL), undertaken from 2015 to 2018 in the compulsory subject Graphic Expression imparted during the first year from all the degree studies of the Escola d'Enginyeria de Barcelona Est from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya—UPC BarcelonaTech. The introduction of active-learning teaching methodologies for the solving of problems with computer aided design throughout the course, with increasing complexity of exercise completion, has led to a significant improvement in academic results by students in this subject. The results show that the inclusion of these methodologies improves student learning, as seen through the group development of an engineering project presented on the conclusion of the course. PBL is the methodology that is most highly appreciated by students because it enables them to integrate all the skills and knowledge acquired throughout the course and is also the activity in which they obtain the best marks.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

The present communication gives information about the initiation of the organised bird-ringing in Catalonia, which began with the union of two groups which, together with some independent ringers, constituted the actual «Grup Catala d'Anellament». There is a commentary on the most important ringing campaigns performed during the years 1975-1977: those of migrant passerines, wintering and mountain birds, white storks, colonial birds (gulls, terns, waders, herons) and bee-eaters mainly. There is, too, a quantitative and qualitative systematic list of all the ringed birds from 1975 to 1977, being on the whole 12.167; and also a short commentary about the controls, our recuperations and those of other ringers of whole Europe. Of special interest is the publicitary campaign organised to inform about our ringing activities, and thus obtain a greater number of recuperations
