Geochemistry of metasedimentary rocks from the Eastern Pyrenees (Iberian Peninsula): Implications for correlation of Ediacaran terranes along the Gondwanan margin
The North African margin of Gondwana formed by subduction and accretion during Ediacaran to Cambrian times. Sections of this active margin were incorporated during the late Paleozoic to the Variscan and Appalachian orogens. In the Variscan realm, these sections define in some regions a Cadomian basement comprising thick metasedimentary series associated with coeval subduction-related magmatic rock dated in the range 650–500 Ma. In the Cap de Creus Massif (Eastern Pyrenean domain), the Cadomian metasedimentary rocks formed from sediments derived from mixed felsic and intermediate/mafic sources, intruded by granitoid and minor mafic igneous rocks. These series were formed in a peri-Gondwanan volcanic arc setting, like other Cadomian series described in the SW of the Iberian Massif, such as Serie Negra Group of the Ossa Morena Complex. However, the Nd model ages of the Cap de Creus metasedimentary samples range from 1431 to 1620 Ma and are younger than those of their SW Iberia equivalents. This result can be interpreted as an indication of an eastern location in the Ediacaran - Cambrian peri-Gondwanan magmatic arc. Furthermore, the Cadomian series in the Central Iberian Zone have even younger Nd model ages than those of SW and NE Iberia. We present two end-member paleogeographic models consistent with reconstruction of the initial location of the Cap de Creus Massif and its relations with other domains (Ossa Morena Complex and Central Iberian Zone) in this sector of the North African Gondwanan margin. We would like to express our gratitude to the Prof. G. High pressure metapelites from the Badajoz-Córdoba Unit (Iberian Massif): the late Devonian suture of the Variscan Orogen
X Congreso Geológico de España, 5-7 julio 2021 Vitoria-Gasteiz[EN] The Badajoz-Córdoba Unit (BCU) represents a high-P terrane mainly constituted by metapelites, metagreywackes, orthogneisses, Grt-amphibolites and highly retrogressed eclogites. The high-P metamorphic event has been dated at c. 377 Ma. Rare metapelites with well-preserved high-P mineral assemblages have been discovered in the unit. They appear as foliated white-colored rocks, in which large pinkish-red garnets up to 1 cm in diameter with abundant inclusions stand out. The mineral assemblage of these metapelites includes garnet, chloritoid (up to XMg = 0.32), kyanite, staurolite, chlorite, phengite (up to Si = 3.16 apfu), paragonite, margarite and rutile. Pseudosection modelling of representative samples indicates that this mineral assemblage formed during a first high-P metamorphic event at P> 20 kbar and T= c. 525°C (blueschist-eclogite facies), followed by a severe exhumation with moderate heating. The BCU can be correlate with other equivalents high-P and low-intermediate-T units in the Iberian Massif, and also all along the Variscan Orogen from Iberia to the Bohemian Massif.[ES] La Unidad de Badajoz-Córdoba (BCU) representa un terreno de alta-P constituido esencialmente por metapelitas, metagrauvacas, ortogneises, Grt-anfibolitas y eclogitas muy retrogradadas.

[EN] Correlation of a group of allochthonous terranes (referred to as basal, ophiolitic and upper units) exposed in
the NW and SW of the Iberian Massif, is used to propose a new geotectonic zone in the southern branch of the Variscan
Orogen: the Galicia - Ossa-Morena Zone. Recent advances in SW Iberia identify most of the former Ossa-Morena Zone
as another allochthonous complex of the Iberian Massif, the Ossa-Morena Complex, equivalent to the Cabo Ortegal,
Órdenes, Malpica-Tui, Bragança and Morais complexes described in NW Iberia. The new geotectonic zone and its
counterparts along the rest of the Variscan Orogen constitute an Internal Variscan Zone with ophiolites and units
affected by high-P metamorphism. The Galicia - Ossa-Morena Zone includes a Variscan suture and pieces of
continental crust bearing the imprint of Ediacaran-Cambrian events related to the activity of peri-Gondwanan magmatic
arcs (Cadomian orogenesis). In the Iberian Massif, the general structure of this geotectonic zone represents a
duplication of the Gondwanan platform, the outboard sections being juxtaposed on top of domains located closer to the
Financial support has been provided by the Spanish

Opening and closure of Cadomian peri-Gondwanan oceans: age and evolution of the Mérida Ophiolite (SW Iberia)
In the SW Iberian Massif, the Ossa-Morena Complex contains a stack of units of different origin and tectonothermal evolution. Individual terranes of the complex record a Cadomian history, traditionally interpreted in relation to the dynamics of a peri-Gondwanan volcanic arc. The interpretation of the Cadomian terranes is a key issue in the reconstruction of the Ediacaran margin of Gondwana in NW Africa. In the Mérida Massif, a mafic – ultramafic unit stacked between two units of continental or arc affinity is interpreted as a Cadomian ophiolite, the Mérida Ophiolite. Within it, mafic lithologies dated at c. 596 Ma (U-Pb in zircon) have calc-alkaline or tholeiitic affinity, indicating generation in a supra-subduction zone setting. The ophiolite shows a main event of Cadomian metamorphism (c. 590 Ma, U-Pb garnet dating) with a prograde P-T path and peak conditions at c. 700°C and 8 kbar. The mafic rocks show Nd isotopic compositions clearly different from those characteristics of the mafic rocks formed in the axial zone of the volcanic arc. Hence, the Mérida Ophiolite probably represents oceanic lithosphere of a back-arc basin, opened between the volcanic arc and the outer margin of Gondwana. Closure of the back-arc occurred during collision of the volcanic arc with the margin of Gondwana (starting at c. 590 Ma), which caused rapid accretion of the back-arc oceanic lithosphere beneath the arc and prograde metamorphism typical of subduction inception. The Mérida Ophiolite was finally obducted above the continental margin of Gondwana, presently preserved in gneissic unit piled beneath the ophiolite. Cadomian evolution of this peri-Gondwanan arc section continued with new tectonothermal events dated in the range 560–540 Ma that alternated with episodes of intense magmatic activity and preceded the collapse of the magmatic arc and its erosive levelling, followed by the generation of a new episode of intense magmatic activity in the arc and the unconformable deposition of the Ediacaran-Cambrian Malcocinado Formation.</p
Micro/Mesoporous Activated Carbons Derived from Polyaniline: Promising Candidates for CO2 Adsorption
A series of activated carbons were prepared by carbonization of polyaniline at different temperatures, using KOH or K2CO3 as activating agent. Pure microporous or micro/mesoporous activated carbons were obtained depending on the preparation conditions. Carbonization temperature has been proven to be a key parameter to define the textural properties of the carbon when using KOH. Low carbonization temperatures (400–650 °C) yield materials with a highly developed micro- and mesoporous structure, whereas high temperatures (800 °C) yield microporous carbons. Some of the materials prepared using KOH exhibit a BET surface area superior to 4000 m2/g, with total pore volume exceeding 2.5 cm3/g, which are among the largest found for activated carbons. On the other hand, microporous materials are obtained when using K2CO3, independently of carbonization temperature. Some of the materials were tested for CO2 capture due to their high microporosity and N content. The adsorption capacity for CO2 at atmospheric pressure and 0 °C achieves a value of ∼7.6 mmol CO2/g, which is among the largest reported in the literature. This study provides guidelines for the design of activated carbons with a proper N/C ratio for CO2 capture at atmospheric pressure.Authors acknowledge financial support from BroadBit industry (BroadBit Slovakia s.r.o.
