I narrate the beginning, the progress and the repercussions of my knowledge of Vico in my intellectual and educational praxis. I emphasize its political intentionality, its humanistic conception of education, whose vindication is necessary now, and of the New science I emphasize three centers of interest: the age of the gods with their poetic wisdom, the history of the famoli and the age of the men, whose fragile estability puts it in danger of recource.

This piece attempts to explore the constant connection between life, work and fame within Vico from the expression that it achieves in De mente, where the vital events of its author and his intelectual evolution surface

    Get PDF
This paper inquiries into the ethical-political line that inspires Vico’s thought since the beginning of his Inaugural Addressess, and is focused on De ratione, the seventh of those opening discourses of the academic year in the University of Naples. De ratione is an expression of Vico’s denounce of the difficulties and disadvantages of applying the Cartesian method to the civil life. In this way, the work of Vico is presented as some form of modern criticism of Descartes’ “new criticism”, and of his application of the geometrical method to our knowledge of the HUMAN WORLD

The Middle to Late Pleistocene herpetofaunal assemblages from the Jarama and Manzanares valleys (Madrid, central Spain): an ecological synthesis

The successive fossil amphibian and reptile assemblages from the Middle to Late Pleistocene sites from the Manzanares and Jarama River Valleys (Madrid, central Spain) permitted the reconstruction of part of the climate instability with high-amplitude and rapid shifts of the last 450 ka and their associated landscapes: Áridos-1 (MIS11b), Valdocarros II (MIS8a/7e), Estanque de Tormentas de Butarque ETB-H02 (MIS7d or MIS6), PRERESA (MIS7/6 or MIS5a) and HAT (MIS5a). This work aims to present a regional synthesis of the palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental data obtained from the herpetofaunal assemblages for these two valleys and their influence on the biodiversity during the Pleistocene. As a whole, these archaeo-paleontological localities document a total of 20 taxa (8 anurans and 12 reptiles) thus representing 76.9% of the modern authochtonous herpetofauna of the southeast of the Region of Madrid. Taking as a reference the modern situation in the area, the successive herpetofaunal assemblages permits a hypothetical landscape reconstruction where three different periods are represented with a glacial landscape (ETB-H02), a landscape of transition from cool to temperate climatic conditions (Valdocarros II), and an interglacial landscape (Áridos-1, HAT, PRERESA, and today). Environment is particularly open during dry periods, independently of if it is cold or warm. The main difference between an interglacial and a glacial period is the opposite representation of woodlands vs. moist environments: the last ones being more represented during cold periods than during warm periods. Finally, as documented by the succession from Valdocarros II, periods of transition between cold and warm climate are more forested but at the expense of humid meadows progressively. According to the relation between richness, biodiversity and climatic and environmental factors, a clear correlation appears between reptile richness and woodlands. In a similar way, mean annual precipitation (MAP) is revealed to be the most influent factor on reptile local diversity certainly because of its implications on vegetal cover extension and ecosystem productivity and resources. For amphibians the MAP does not influence dominancy but species richness: anuran richness being higher for lower MAP. Such an unusual pattern is certainly due to the fact that there are no strict forest-dweller anurans within the archaeological assemblages and that most of the anurans present in the sites are well adapted to arid conditions

The Effectiveness of Glutathione Redox Status as a Possible Tumor Marker in Colorectal Cancer

[EN] The role of oxidative stress (OS) in cancer is a matter of great interest due to the implication of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and their oxidation products in the initiation of tumorigenesis, its progression, and metastatic dissemination. Great efforts have been made to identify the mechanisms of ROS-induced carcinogenesis; however, the validation of OS byproducts as potential tumor markers (TMs) remains to be established. This interventional study included a total of 80 colorectal cancer (CRC) patients and 60 controls. By measuring reduced glutathione (GSH), its oxidized form (GSSG), and the glutathione redox state in terms of the GSSG/GSH ratio in the serum of CRC patients, we identified significant changes as compared to healthy subjects. These findings are compatible with the effectiveness of glutathione as a TM. The thiol redox state showed a significant increase towards oxidation in the CRC group and correlated significantly with both the tumor state and the clinical evolution. The sensitivity and specificity of serum glutathione levels are far above those of the classical TMs CEA and CA19.9. We conclude that the GSSG/GSH ratio is a simple assay which could be validated as a novel clinical TM for the diagnosis and monitoring of CRC.This work was partially supported by grants GST, UGP-19-037 FISABIO, Universitat Politecnica de Valencia-the Hospital Universitario Doctor Peset POLISABIO collaboration program (UPV-FISABIO) NanOdGSens-2, the Spanish Government project RTI2018-100910-B-C41 (MCUI/AEI/FEDER, UE), the Generalitat Valenciana project PROMETEO/2018/024 and PI18/00932 by Instituto de Salud Carlos III and co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF "A way to build Europe"). Ahí se encuentra un importantísimo elemento de (difusión y consolidación de) “humanidad”.In this text is explained the important task that Vico attributes to “famoli” in the marine transmigrations and the foundations of ultramarine colonies. There is a most important element of (diffusion and consolidation of) “humanity”
