Ludwig Hilberseimer at the Illinois Institute of Technology: Architectural Education, Organic Democracy and Colonization
Ludwig Hilberseimer’s role at defining trends in architectural education in the United States is a relevant one, and deserves special attention due to its rigorous method. This article aims to cast light at his teaching experience at IIT, where he promoted an integration of urban theory and political ideals. Understood as an act of cultural colonization, architectural education appears as a powerful tool to reshape the territory in the United States and the world, as part of an ongoing process of Modern postwar globalization
Authenticity as a challenge in the transformation of Beijing's urban heritage: The commercial gentrification of the Guozijian historic area
The transformation of Beijing's historic center is in need of an evaluation from the standpoint of authenticity, a concept increasingly used and constantly redefined. Beginning with a heritage-based definition of authenticity, this article will present a review of the urban intervention policies that have been implemented in Beijing's inner city hutongs since the Revolution in 1949, evaluating their effect on the capital's preservation. Then, the paper will continue describing how current urban redevelopment is assuming contemporary definitions of urban authenticity emanating from the creative city paradigm and the tourism industry, leaving a lasting effect on its vernacular heritage. Taking the historical area of Guozijian as a case study, this article will evaluate the integration of contemporary commercial architecture into this historic setting. This evaluation will highlight how flawed conceptions of authenticity have brought about an ongoing gentrification process that is displacing a large share of the population, a fundamental component of urban heritage authenticity
[EN] After decades of decay and widespread razing, the shikumen residential typology of Shanghai is experiencing a renaissance. However, the preservation methods that are being implemented are both controversial, from the perspective of urban heritage conservation, and bold, from the point of view of the practice of architectural and urban design. This paper critically lays out the possibility of producing new urban conservation models that could accommodate both approaches, scientific preservation and contemporary design, in the context of Shanghai’s entrepreneurial from of governance and its consideration as a heritage city.
The intervention on 20th Century architecture has attracted substantial attention in the realm of cultural heritage. This article provides an insight into the transformation of relevant 20th Century buildings , paying special attention to the case of the architecture of the modern movement in Spain
