Wobbling of a liquid column between unequal discs

One of the most puzzling results of an experiment on the stability of long liquid columns under microgravity, performed aboard Spacelab-D2 in 1993 and named STACO, aiming at the analysis of deformations of nearly cylindrical liquid columns under several mechanical disturbances, is revisited here. It corresponds to the unexplained breakage of an 85 mm long liquid bridge of low viscosity silicone oil, established between unequal discs of 30 and 28 mm, intended to counterbalance the expected deformation by residual acceleration found in previous flights, and left idle because the vibrations and oscillations to be applied afterwards were not started, for fear of premature breakage. A detailed image analysis is performed to extract the maximum amount of data, to be able to check against available theories for axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric deformations of a liquid column

Rank equivalent and rank degenerate skew cyclic codes

Two skew cyclic codes can be equivalent for the Hamming metric only if they have the same length, and only the zero code is degenerate. The situation is completely different for the rank metric, where lengths of codes correspond to the number of outgoing links from the source when applying the code on a network. We study rank equivalences between skew cyclic codes of different lengths and, with the aim of finding the skew cyclic code of smallest length that is rank equivalent to a given one, we define different types of length for a given skew cyclic code, relate them and compute them in most cases. We give different characterizations of rank degenerate skew cyclic codes using conventional polynomials and linearized polynomials. Some known results on the rank weight hierarchy of cyclic codes for some lengths are obtained as particular cases and extended to all lengths and to all skew cyclic codes. Finally, we prove that the smallest length of a linear code that is rank equivalent to a given skew cyclic code can be attained by a pseudo-skew cyclic code. Throughout the paper, we find new relations between linear skew cyclic codes and their Galois closures

Programmable parametric filter with noise generator and data acquisition

    Get PDF
Audio filtering systems are used in commercial applications involving equalizers. However, some of the topologies used can be modified to be used in audio signal treatment applications. Parametric filter topologies allow the user to modify independently the central frequency of the filter, the bandwidth and the gain. Using a microprocessor and programmable components will allow the user to modify the parameters of the filter and to acquire the filtered signal so it can be processed in other stages. To improve the functionality of the system, a server will be implemented to process the data sent by the user, will be sent afterwards to the microcontroller. Finally, the results obtained will be thrown back to the user.Postprint (published version
