Propagation studies for the construction of atomic macro-coherence in dense media as a tool to investigate neutrino physics

In this manuscript we review the possibility of inducing large coherence in a macroscopic dense target by using adiabatic techniques. For this purpose we investigate the degradation of the laser pulse through propagation, which was also related to the size of the prepared medium. Our results show that, although adiabatic techniques offer the best alternative in terms of stability against experimental parameters, for very dense media it is necessary to engineer laser-matter interaction in order to minimize laser field degradation. This work has been triggered by the proposal of a new technique, namely Radiative Emission of Neutrino Pairs (RENP), capable of investigating neutrino physics through quantum optics concepts which require the preparation of a macrocoherent state.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure

Cursos e Congresos, C-155[Abstract] In the day-to-day work of bioinformatics, the use of integrated software packages, which encompass a wide range of tools, enables the development of pipelines for omics data analysis. Within the various existing pipelines, we focus on the analysis of the 16S rRNA gene as it allows for the study of diversity and taxonomy of prokaryotic microorganisms such as Bacteria and Archaea. However, these pipelines often involve a sequence of multiple tools that require intermediate steps before further processing can proceed, as in the case between Cutadapt and DADA2. In fact, in a typical pipeline, the values for DADA2 input arguments ’trunc-len-f’ and ’trunc-len-r’ are extracted from the output of Cutadapt. The best approach for selecting optimal values (aka the trimming positions) is graphically visualizing Cutadapt output and manually selecting the most accurate trimming position length. Therefore, we propose the automation of this specific intermediate step between Cutadapt and DADA2 tools, by selecting values displayed in the graphs that meet the filtering criteria. This automation has been incorporated into a custom pipeline for the analysis of the microbiome in 16S paired-end samples from colorectal cancer patients, and could potentially serve as a standardization approach in these processesThe authors of this paper extend their sincere appreciation to the collaborative efforts and contributions of the meiGAbiome Group, aswell as the entire team of medical and anatomopathologists. Finally, we are deeply grateful to the patients whose selfless donations have made this and numerous other studies possibl

Niveles de fondo geoquímico e influencia del marco geológico en las concentraciones edafogeoquímicas de base de suelos seleccionados de Castilla-La Mancha

Geochemical baselines are needed for environmental legislation and political decision-making, especially in the assessment of contaminated soil. Although the term «geochemical baseline» appears in the international geochemical studies and programs, probably it has never been well defined. A geochemical baseline for an element refers to its natural variations in concentration in the superficial environment. In order to answer questions such as «what is the natural concentration of trace elements in rocks and soils of Castilla-La Mancha region?» this work seeks to establish the geochemical background, baseline pedo-geochemical concentrations and reference values for the Castilla-La Mancha region. Trace element concentrations in the study area were similar to those analysed in other areas of Spain and the world. Their baseline concentrations depend mainly on the geochemical characteristics of the bed rocks.

Radon and material radiopurity assessment for the NEXT double beta decay experiment

The Neutrino Experiment with a Xenon TPC (NEXT), intended to investigate the neutrinoless double beta decay using a high-pressure xenon gas TPC filled with Xe enriched in 136Xe at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory in Spain, requires ultra-low background conditions demanding an exhaustive control of material radiopurity and environmental radon levels. An extensive material screening process is underway for several years based mainly on gamma-ray spectroscopy using ultra-low background germanium detectors in Canfranc but also on mass spectrometry techniques like GDMS and ICPMS. Components from shielding, pressure vessel, electroluminescence and high voltage elements and energy and tracking readout planes have been analyzed, helping in the final design of the experiment and in the construction of the background model. The latest measurements carried out will be presented and the implication on NEXT of their results will be discussed. The commissioning of the NEW detector, as a first step towards NEXT, has started in Canfranc; in-situ measurements of airborne radon levels were taken there to optimize the system for radon mitigation and will be shown too.Comment: Proceedings of the Low Radioactivity Techniques 2015 workshop (LRT2015), Seattle, March 201

Monte Carlo flattening filter design to high energy intraoperative electron beam homogenization

[EN] Intraoperative radiotherapy using mobile linear accelerators is used for a wide variety of malignancies. However, when large fields are used in combination with high energies, a deterioration of the flatness dose profile is measured with respect to smaller fields and lower energies. Indeed, for the LIAC HWL of Sordina, this deterioration is observed for the 12 MeV beam combined with 10 cm (or larger) diameter applicator. Aimed to solve this problem, a flattening filter has been designed and validated evaluating the feasibility of its usage at the upper part of the applicator. The design of the filter was based on Monte Carlo simulations because of its accuracy in modeling components of clinical devices, among other purposes. The LIAC 10 cm diameter applicator was modeled and simulated independently by two different research groups using two different MC codes, reproducing the heterogeneity of the 12 MeV energy beam. Then, an iterative process of filter design was carried out. Finally, the MC designed conical filter with the optimal size and height to obtain the desired flattened beam was built in-house using a 3D printer. During the experimental validation of the applicator-filter, percentage depth dose, beam profiles, absolute and peripheral dose measurements were performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the filter addition in the applicator. These measurements conclude that the beam has been flattened, from 5.9% with the standard configuration to 1.6% for the configuration with the filter, without significant increase of the peripheral dose. Consequently, the new filter-applicator LIAC configuration can be used also in a conventional surgery room. A reduction of 16% of the output dose and a reduction of 1.1 mm in the D50 of the percentage depth dose was measured with respect to the original configuration. This work is a proof-of-concept that demonstrates that it is possible to add a filter able to flatten the beam delivered by the Sordina LIAC HWL. Future studies will focus on more refined technical solutions fully compatible with the integrity of the applicator, including its sterilization, to be safely introduced in the clinical practice. The authors declare the following financial interests/personal relationships which may be considered as potential competing interests: Giuseppe Felici reports a relationship with S.I.T.
