    Participation in devolved commons management: multiscale socioeconomic factors related to individuals' participation in community-based management of marine protected areas in Indonesia

    Management of common-pool natural resources is commonly implemented under institutional models promoting devolved decision-making, such as co-management and community-based management. Although participation of local people is critical to the success of devolved commons management, few studies have empirically investigated how individuals' participation is related to socioeconomic factors that operate at multiple scales. Here, we evaluated how individual- and community-scale factors were related to levels of individual participation in management of community-based marine protected areas in Indonesia. In addressing this aim, we drew on multiple bodies of literature on human behaviour from economics and social science, including the social-ecological systems framework from the literature on common-pool resources, the theory of planned behaviour from social psychology, and public goods games from behavioural economics. We found three key factors related to level of participation of local people: subjective norms, structural elements of social capital, and nested institutions. There was also suggestive evidence that participation was related to people's cooperative behavioural disposition, which we elicited using a public goods game. These results point to the importance of considering socioeconomic factors that operate at multiple scales when examining individual behaviour. Further, our study highlights the need to consider multiscale mechanisms other than those designed to appeal to self interested concerns, such as regulations and material incentives, which are typically employed in devolved commons management to encourage participation. Increased understanding of the factors related to participation could facilitate better targeting of investments aimed at encouraging cooperative management

    THE AMUNDSEN SEA LOW Variability, Change, and Impact on Antarctic Climate

    The Amundsen Sea low (ASL) is a climatological low pressure center that exerts considerable influence on the climate of West Antarctica. Its potential to explain important recent changes in Antarctic climate, for example, in temperature and sea ice extent, means that it has become the focus of an increasing number of studies. Here, the authors summarize the current understanding of the ASL, using reanalysis datasets to analyze recent variability and trends, as well as ice-core chemistry and climate model projections, to examine past and future changes in the ASL, respectively. The ASL has deepened in recent decades, affecting the climate through its influence on the regional meridional wind field, which controls the advection of moisture and heat into the continent. Deepening of the ASL in spring is consistent with observed West Antarctic warming and greater sea ice extent in the Ross Sea. Climate model simulations for recent decades indicate that this deepening is mediated by tropical variability while climate model projections through the twenty-first century suggest that the ASL will deepen in some seasons in response to greenhouse gas concentration increases

    Can current reanalyses accurately portray changes in Southern Annular Mode structure prior to 1979?

    Early reanalyses are less than optimal for investigating the regional effects of ozone depletion on Southern Hemisphere (SH) high-latitude climate because the availability of satellite sounder data from 1979 significantly improved their accuracy in data sparse regions, leading to a coincident inhomogeneity. To determine whether current reanalyses are better at SH high-latitudes in the pre-satellite era, here we examine the capabilities of the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) fifth generation reanalysis (ERA5), the Twentieth Century Reanalysis version 3 (20CRv3), and the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) 55-year reanalysis (JRA-55) to reproduce and help explain the pronounced change in the relationship between the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) and Antarctic near-surface air temperatures (SAT) between 1950 and 1979 (EARLY period) and 1980ā€“2020 (LATE period). We find that ERA5 best reproduces Antarctic SAT in the EARLY period and is also the most homogeneous reanalysis across the EARLY and LATE periods. ERA5 and 20CRv3 provide a good representation of SAM in both periods with JRA-55 only similarly skilful in the LATE period. Nevertheless, all three reanalyses show the marked change in Antarctic SAM-SAT relationships between the two periods. In particular, ERA5 and 20CRv3 demonstrate the observed switch in the sign of the SAM-SAT relationship in the Antarctic Peninsula: analysis of changes in SAM structure and associated meridional wind anomalies reveal that in these reanalyses positive SAM is linked to cold southerly winds during the EARLY period and warm northerly winds in the LATE period, thus providing a simple explanation for the regional SAM-SAT relationship reversal

    LH pulse secretion changes during the menstrual cycle from a rapid regular pattern in the follicular phase to a slower and irregular pattern in the luteal phase. To determine whether the irregular LH pulse pattern in the luteal phase reflects altered GnRH secretion or altered pituitary responsiveness to GnRH, we gave low dose GnRH pulses (25 ng/kg i.v.) every 2 h or every hour for 10 or 12 d to three women with isolated GnRH deficiency. After 4 d of GnRH alone, oestradiol (E 2 ) was given and after 6 d progesterone (P) was added to mimic the hormonal milieu of the luteal phase. LH and FSH were measured every 4 h throughout and also every 20 min for 6 or 12 h, before and after GnRH alone (day 0 and day 4), after E 2 (day 6), and after E 2 + P (day 10 and day 12). Both GnRH pulse frequencies resulted in a rapid increase in plasma FSH to peaks on day 4 (every 2 h) and day 2 and 3 (every hour). FSH concentrations then declined as plasma E 2 rose to 50ā€“80 pg/ml reflecting the selective inhibitory effect of E 2 on FSH release. Plasma LH was also increased after the hourly GnRH injections and this regimen was associated with a more rapid rise in E 2 reflecting follicular maturation. In contrast to the differences in mean hormone concentrations, administration of GnRH at both frequencies resulted in sustained one-on-one responsiveness of LH that was maintained in the presence of both oestrogen and progesterone at mid-luteal phase concentrations.     PPARgamma in complex with an antagonist and inverse agonist: a tumble and trap mechanism of the activation helix

    Peroxisome proliferator activated receptor Ī³ (PPARĪ³) is a nuclear receptor and target for antidiabetics that increase insulin sensitivity. Owing to the side effects of PPARĪ³ full agonists, research has recently focused on non-activating ligands of PPARĪ³, which increase insulin sensitivity with decreased side effects. Here, we present the crystal structures of inverse agonist SR10171 and a chemically related antagonist SR11023 bound to the PPARĪ³ ligand-binding domain, revealing an allosteric switch in the activation helix, helix 12 (H12), forming an antagonist conformation in the receptor. H12 interacts with the antagonists to become fixed in an alternative location. Native mass spectrometry indicates that this prevents contacts with coactivator peptides and allows binding of corepressor peptides. Antagonists of related nuclear receptors act to sterically prevent the active configuration of H12, whereas these antagonists of PPARĪ³ alternatively trap H12 in an inactive configuration, which we have termed the tumble and trap mechanism.Rebecca L.     Out of the blue: the evolution of horizontally polarized signals in <em>Haptosquilla</em> (Crustacea, Stomatopoda, Protosquillidae)

    The polarization of light provides information that is used by many animals for a number of different visually guided behaviours. Several marine species, such as stomatopod crustaceans and cephalopod molluscs, communicate using visual signals that contain polarized information, content that is often part of a more complex multidimensional visual signal. In this work, we investigate the evolution of polarized signals in species of Haptosquilla, a widespread genus of stomatopod, as well as related protosquillids. We present evidence for a pre-existing bias towards horizontally polarized signal content and demonstrate that the properties of the polarization vision system in these animals increase the signal-to-noise ratio of the signal. Combining these results with the increase in efficacy that polarization provides over intensity and hue in a shallow marine environment, we propose a joint framework for the evolution of the polarized form of these complex signals based on both efficacy-driven (proximate) and content-driven (ultimate) selection pressures
