2-Formyl-4-nitrobenzenesulphenyl chloride has been synthesised and its reactions with ketones examined. A practical route to a range of 2-substituted, 5-nitro-benzo [b] thiophenes and certain 2,3-dihydro aldols of the same system has been described. By reaction of the sulphenyl chloride with isopropyl methyl ketone the 2,3,4,5-tetrahydro benzo [b] thiepin system was formed. Extension of the latter reaction to include selected cyclic ketones permitted the synthesis of novel tricyclic analogues and the crystal structure of one member of the latter group has been unambiguously determined by the X-ray method. Lyceum: internet voice groupware for distance learning

This paper describes the design, implementation and deployment of Lyceum, a groupware system providing students and tutors with real time voice conferencing and visual workspace tools, over the standard internet. Lyceum uses a Java client/server architecture to tackle a formidable set of networking requirements: multi-way voice communication with synchronous shared displays, scalable to hundreds of simultaneous users, running over normal modem connections via unknown internet service providers, on home PCs. Additionally, the design had to support multiple courses with different requirements. We describe the interdisciplinary requirements analysis, and iterative design process, by which an academic course team was able to specify and evaluate prototypes. We present the systemís architecture, describe the technical successes and failures from Lyceumís first large scale deployment, and summarise its affordances for interaction and learning

Migration costs and observational returns to migration in the developing world

Recent studies find that observational returns to rural-urban migration are near zero in three developing countries. We revisit this result using panel tracking surveys from six countries, finding higher returns on average. We then interpret these returns in a multi-region Roy model with heterogeneity in migration costs. In the model, the observational return to migration confounds the urban premium and the individual benefits of migrants, and is not directly informative about the welfare gain from lowering migration costs. Patterns of regional heterogeneity in returns, and a comparison of experimental to observational returns, are consistent with the model’s predictions

In the eyes of many, college sports had now entered a “Wild West” frontier because of NIL, especially as it pertains to recruiting athletes. But what does that really mean, “Wild West”? This article will provide a medical/legal perspective to breast augmentation surgery. Written by an attorney who teaches anatomy and a plastic surgeon who routinely performs the procedure, it will initially offer a medical analysis of how the procedure is performed along with its attendant risks. The second part will focus on the court cases and legal theories that have arisen when things go wrong. The article will explain the convoluted litigation history involving breast augmentation when suits were common place and a group of experts linked breast implants to the development of autoimmune disease without any real scientific basis to support their opinions. It will conclude with a discussion of the various legal theories currently being asserted when the surgery does not live up to the patient\u27s expectations

In A Different Light: An Examination of Artifacts Using Affordable Digital Infrared Imaging

The objective of this thesis is to analyze the visual effectiveness of inexpensive, converted near-infrared digital cameras on a variety of artifacts. Twenty-nine artifacts ranging in condition from unconserved to having completed conservation were chosen from five main type groups; bone, ceramics, metal, paper and textile, and wood. Each artifact was imaged with both a conventional dSLR and one specifically modified to image within the near-infrared band of the electromagnetic spectrum. Following imaging, the two types of photographs for each artifact were directly compared, analyzing visual changes between conventional and near-infrared. The changes were described and each object given a rating of “not recommended”, “no change”, or “recommended” in regards to infrared imaging unveiling useful data outside of that seen with normal photography. Of the twenty-nine artifacts imaged, thirteen were “recommended” as showing potentially useful information for researchers. While no definitive claims could be made due to the variety of responses across all five groups, organic artifacts, as a whole, tended to show the most potential of responding positively to near-infrared photography using modified dSLRs. Even though none of the five groups imaged consistently across all its artifacts, the ability of modified dSLRs to define patterns in staining and corrosion, differentiating inks, penetrating dirt and stained surfaces, and revealing wood grain and tree rings was well noted and showed the potential of making such cameras a useful part of an analytical toolkit for archaeologists
