    Foreign-Market Entry Strategies in the European Union

    This study utilized intra-firm, socio-cultural, geographical-proximity, and political-stability variables to explain bimodal foreign direct investment (FDI) patterns by agri-food and beverage multinational companies into and within the European Union. A logit framework incorporated a unique-count database of firm-level investment patterns from 1987–1998. The results showed the 1992 structural changes under the Maastricht Treaty increased the probability of wholly owned FDI modes such as greenfields and buyouts. The model also found that past modal strategies of firms, language barriers, and exchange-rate volatility all correctly explained modal investment patterns.     Analyses of the solid earth and ocean tidal perturbations on the orbits of the GEOS-1 and GEOS-2 satellites

    The luni-solar tidal perturbations in the inclination of the GEOS-I and GEOS-II satellite orbits were analyzed for the solid Earth and ocean tide conditions. Precision reduced camera and TRANET Doppler observations spanning periods of over 600 days for each satellite were used to derive mean orbital elements. Perturbations due to the earth's gravity field, solar radiation pressure, and atmospheric drag were modelled, and the resulting inclination residuals were analyzed for tidal effects. The amplitudes of the observed total tidal effects were about 1.2 arc seconds (36 meters) in the inclination of GEOS-I and 4.5 arc seconds (135 meters) for GEOS-II. The solid earth tides were then modelled using earth tide measurements, earth rotation observations, and seismic data. The resulting inclination residuals were analyzed for ocean tide parameters. The derived parameters consist of one second degree coefficient and an accompanying phase angle in a spherical harmonic expansion of the ocean tidal potential for each tidal constituent.     Involvement in midwifery education: experiences from a service user and carer partnership.

    This article provides a critical reflection on the experiences of the Bournemouth University Public Involvement in Education and Research (PIER) partnership in developing approaches to involving service users and user groups within midwifery programmes of education; an NMC requirement since 2009. Specific models and activities are explored, including using social media to consult with expectant and new parents; organising direct conversations between women, their families, academics and students to explore experiences such as grief and loss and the use of support networks during pregnancy; and developing digital resources to create real, in depth and meaningful case studies. Three key benefits to having meaningful and well supported involvement are identified: emotional impact and the opportunity to develop insight and resilience; knowledge impact and the opportunity to better understand the application of theory; and practical impact, which can lead to tangible changes to students’ subsequent practice

    Parametric study of transport aircraft systems cost and weight

    The results of a NASA study to develop production cost estimating relationships (CERs) and weight estimating relationships (WERs) for commercial and military transport aircraft at the system level are presented. The systems considered correspond to the standard weight groups defined in Military Standard 1374 and are listed. These systems make up a complete aircraft exclusive of engines. The CER for each system (or CERs in several cases) utilize weight as the key parameter. Weights may be determined from detailed weight statements, if available, or by using the WERs developed, which are based on technical and performance characteristics generally available during preliminary design. The CERs that were developed provide a very useful tool for making preliminary estimates of the production cost of an aircraft. Likewise, the WERs provide a very useful tool for making preliminary estimates of the weight of aircraft based on conceptual design information

    Elucidating structure-function relationships from molecule-to-cell-to-tissue: from research modalities to clinical realities

    The National Academy of Engineering selected ‘Imaging’ as one of the greatest engineering achievements of the 20th century (Greatest Engineering Achievements of the 20th Century. 2009 (cited 2008, November 10); available from: http://www.greatachievements.org/). The combination of different imaging modalities and technologies for mapping bimolecular and/or biological processes within single cells or even whole organs has extraordinary potential for revolutionizing the diagnosis and treatment of pathophysiological disorders, and thus for mitigating the significant social and economic costs associated with the clinical management of disease. Such integrated imaging approaches will eventually lead to individualized programs for disease prevention through advanced diagnosis, risk stratification and targeted cell therapies resulting in more successful and efficient health care. The goal of this article is to provide readers with a current update of selected of state-of-the-art imaging modalities which would likely to lead to improved clinical outcomes if employed in an integrated approach, including use of ultramicrosensors to detect reactive oxygen/nitrogen species in a single cell, use of electron tomography to visualize and characterize cellular organization in three dimensions (3D), and molecular imaging strategies to assess naturally occurring and therapeutic peripheral and myocardial angiogenesis using targeted radiolabeled tracers

    The mass and radius of the M dwarf companion to GD 448

    We present spectroscopy and photometry of GD 448, a detached white dwarf - M dwarf binary with a period of 2.47h. We find that the NaI 8200A feature is composed of narrow emission lines due to irradiation of the M dwarf by the white dwarf within broad absorption lines that are essentially unaffected by heating. Combined with an improved spectroscopic orbit and gravitational red shift measurement from spectra of the H-alpha line, we are able to derive masses for the white dwarf and M dwarf directly (0.41 +/- 0.01 solar masses and 0.096 +/- 0.004 solar masses, respectively). We use a simple model of the CaII emission lines to establish the radius of the M dwarf assuming the emission from its surface to be proportional to the incident flux per unit area from the white dwarf. The radius derived is 0.125 +/- 0.020 solar radii. The M dwarf appears to be a normal main-sequence star in terms of its mass and radius and is less than half the size of its Roche lobe. The thermal timescale of the M dwarf is much longer than the cooling age of the white dwarf so we conclude that the M dwarf was unaffected by the common-envelope phase. The anomalous width of the H-alpha emission from the M dwarf remains to be explained, but the strengh of the line may be due to X-ray heating of the M dwarf due to accretion onto the white dwarf from the M dwarf wind.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure
