Variations in primary production and particulate carbon flux through the base of the euphotic zone at the site of the Sediment Trap Intercomparison Experiment (Panama Basin)
C primary production data collected during the deployment and recovery cruises of STIE in 1979 showed a simple relationship with light and nutrient concentrations in the euophotic zone. A simple empirical relationship, calibrated using these data, was derived so that weekly averaged observations of fractional cloudiness, sea-surface temperature and mixed layer depth could be used to estimate primary production on a weekly basis for the years 1976–1979. 15N-uptake measurements, which estimate new production, were combined with the 14C data to estimate particulate carbon fluxes from the euphotic zone. Results of calculations showed that production may vary by a factor of three and particulate carbon flux by a factor of ten on a week to week basis with peak values corresponding to times when the mixed layer became enriched in nutrients. Mean euphotic zone production and particulate carbon flux estimated for the STIE deployment cruise were 286 and 138 mg C m–2 d–1, respectively; they were 174 and 59 mg C m–2 d–1 for the recovery cruise. Mean production and flux values were 261 and 122 mg C m–2 d–1, respectively for the duration of STIE. Three high production and particle sedimentation events may have occurred during STIE in September and October 1979. 1979 appeared to be a year of lower than average primary production compared with 1976 and 1977

Marketing wild blueberries as a fresh product has become an increasingly viable alternative for Maine wild blueberry producers. This bulletin presents the results of research that identified marketing regions with the greatest profit potential for fresh wild blueberries and whether there are packaging or promotional strategies that are likely to be more successful than others within these regions. The authors analyze retail demand for fresh wild blueberries in Maine, Boston, and New York City, as well as describe the results of a survey of wholesale buyers of fresh blueberries in Boston. Summary Of Cold Crucible Vitrification Tests Results With Savannah River Site High Level Waste Surrogates
The cold crucible inductive melting (CCIM) technology successfully applied for vitrification of low- and intermediate-level waste (LILW) at SIA Radon, Russia, was tested to be implemented for vitrification of high-level waste (HLW) stored at Savannah River Site, USA. Mixtures of Sludge Batch 2 (SB2) and 4 (SB4) waste surrogates and borosilicate frits as slurries were vitrified in bench- (236 mm inner diameter) and full-scale (418 mm inner diameter) cold crucibles. Various process conditions were tested and major process variables were determined. Melts were poured into 10L canisters and cooled to room temperature in air or in heat-insulated boxes by a regime similar to Canister Centerline Cooling (CCC) used at DWPF. The products with waste loading from ~40 to ~65 wt.% were investigated in details. The products contained 40 to 55 wt.% waste oxides were predominantly amorphous; at higher waste loadings (WL) spinel structure phases and nepheline were present. Normalized release values for Li, B, Na, and Si determined by PCT procedure remain lower than those from EA glass at waste loadings of up to 60 wt.%

High Level Waste (HLW) Vitrification Experience in the US: Application of Glass Product/Process Control to Other HLW and Hazardous Wastes
Vitrification is currently the most widely used technology for the treatment of high level radioactive wastes (HLW) throughout the world. At the Savannah River Site (SRS) actual HLW tank waste has successfully been processed to stringent product and process constraints without any rework into a stable borosilicate glass waste since 1996. A unique 'feed forward' statistical process control (SPC) has been used rather than statistical quality control (SQC). In SPC, the feed composition to the melter is controlled prior to vitrification. In SQC, the glass product is sampled after it is vitrified. Individual glass property models form the basis for the 'feed forward' SPC. The property models transform constraints on the melt and glass properties into constraints on the feed composition. The property models are mechanistic and depend on glass bonding/structure, thermodynamics, quasicrystalline melt species, and/or electron transfers. The mechanistic models have been validated over composition regions well outside of the regions for which they were developed because they are mechanistic. Mechanistic models allow accurate extension to radioactive and hazardous waste melts well outside the composition boundaries for which they were developed
A Binary Logit Estimation of Factors Affecting Adoption of GPS Guidance Systems by Cotton Producers
Binary logit analysis was used to identify the factors influencing adoption of Global Positioning System (GPS) guidance systems by cotton farmers in 11 Mid-south and Southeastern states. Results indicate that adoption was more likely by those who had already adopted other precision-farming practices and had used computers for farm management. In addition, younger and more affluent farmers were more likely to adopt. Farmers with larger farms and with relatively high yields were also more likely to adopt. Soil arthropod responses to different patch types in a mixed-conifer forest of the Sierra Nevada
The Teakettle Ecosystem Experiment in the southern Sierra Nevada is using thinning and prescribed
fire to recreate historical stand conditions. As part of Teakettle we assessed pretreatment diversity and density
of the soil arthropod community in 1998 and 2000. We determined the density and diversity of soil microarthropods
among treatment plots, the influence of patch type (closed canopy, canopy gaps, Ceanothus sp., and
coarse woody debris [CWD]), and established baseline pretreatment data. Mites were the dominant microinvertebrates
(78%). Canopy gaps had the lowest mite density and diversity, and were more sensitive to
year-to-year changes in climate (1998 was an extremely wet year for the region). Soil organic matter as
represented by bulk density appeared to be most closely associated with changes in species composition among
different patch types. There was substantial overlap, however, in community composition among the different
patch types as represented by nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMS) ordination. No significant differences
were observed for mite species richness and density among plots assigned to future treatments. The gap data
suggest that in the characteristically hot, dry summers of the southern Sierra Nevada the rate of recovery of
vegetation following thinning and fire treatments may have a significant influence on the recovery rate of
microarthropods, not only by providing sources of energy inputs in the form of dead organic matter, but also by
