    Terrestrial behavior in titi monkeys (Callicebus, Cheracebus, and Plecturocebus) : potential correlates, patterns, and differences between genera

    For arboreal primates, ground use may increase dispersal opportunities, tolerance to habitat change, access to ground-based resources, and resilience to human disturbances, and so has conservation implications. We collated published and unpublished data from 86 studies across 65 localities to assess titi monkey (Callicebinae) terrestriality. We examined whether the frequency of terrestrial activity correlated with study duration (a proxy for sampling effort), rainfall level (a proxy for food availability seasonality), and forest height (a proxy for vertical niche dimension). Terrestrial activity was recorded frequently for Callicebus and Plecturocebus spp., but rarely for Cheracebus spp. Terrestrial resting, anti-predator behavior, geophagy, and playing frequencies in Callicebus and Plecturocebus spp., but feeding and moving differed. Callicebus spp. often ate or searched for new leaves terrestrially. Plecturocebus spp. descended primarily to ingest terrestrial invertebrates and soil. Study duration correlated positively and rainfall level negatively with terrestrial activity. Though differences in sampling effort and methods limited comparisons and interpretation, overall, titi monkeys commonly engaged in a variety of terrestrial activities. Terrestrial behavior in Callicebus and Plecturocebus capacities may bolster resistance to habitat fragmentation. However, it is uncertain if the low frequency of terrestriality recorded for Cheracebus spp. is a genus-specific trait associated with a more basal phylogenetic position, or because studies of this genus occurred in pristine habitats. Observations of terrestrial behavior increased with increasing sampling effort and decreasing food availability. Overall, we found a high frequency of terrestrial behavior in titi monkeys, unlike that observed in other pitheciids

    Tratamento paliativo precoce no Brasil: dentre casos isolados, um relato

    A revista The Economist publicou o ranking “Quality of Death Index”, em 2015, cravando que o Brasil é o pior país para se morrer. Diante deste cenário, os cuidados paliativos são extremamente importantes por ampararem o paciente fora da possibilidade de cura e os indivíduos envolvidos nesse sistema. Recentes publicações científicas demonstraram, ainda, a relação diretamente proporcional entre o precoce início dos cuidados paliativos com retorno positivo do plano terapêutico e com o aumento da qualidade de vida do paciente. Como objetivo, buscou-se analisar a experiência de uma paciente sob cuidados paliativos iniciado em uma Unidade Básica de Saúde do município de Sinop-MT e caracterizar a importância desse sistema no planejamento dos cuidados multiprofissionais. Quanto aos métodos, utilizou-se relato de experiência através de um estudo de caso. No relato de experiência, a paciente VR, feminina, 84 anos, vítima de um acidente vascular encefálico (AVE) em sua casa, no mês de maio de 2019. Apresenta antecedentes de ser hipertensa e sedentária, associados ao sobrepeso e à idade avançada. Admitida no Hospital Regional da cidade, permanece na UTI por um mês, retorna para sua residência com seguimento pela equipe de atenção básica, realizado um plano terapêutico multidisciplinar imediato, para o cuidado de forma integral e alívio de sofrimento que atenda não só a paciente em si, mas também ao contexto psicossocial envolvido. Atualmente, obteve-se um controle das doenças de base e administração de medicação conforme a necessidade da paciente e o zelo quanto a polifarmácia. Em conclusão, o prévio início dos cuidados paliativos, simultaneamente com o plano terapêutico eficaz, gera um grande potencial de qualidade de vida e resposta clínica assertiva. Dessa forma, a complexidade da metodologia paliativa precoce, atrelada a uma equipe interdisciplinar, amortece os sintomas da moléstia acometida pelo paciente, amenizando o sofrimento, embasados em abordagem holística tanto da paciente quanto do seu entorno

    NEOTROPICAL ALIEN MAMMALS: a data set of occurrence and abundance of alien mammals in the Neotropics

    Biological invasion is one of the main threats to native biodiversity. For a species to become invasive, it must be voluntarily or involuntarily introduced by humans into a nonnative habitat. Mammals were among first taxa to be introduced worldwide for game, meat, and labor, yet the number of species introduced in the Neotropics remains unknown. In this data set, we make available occurrence and abundance data on mammal species that (1) transposed a geographical barrier and (2) were voluntarily or involuntarily introduced by humans into the Neotropics. Our data set is composed of 73,738 historical and current georeferenced records on alien mammal species of which around 96% correspond to occurrence data on 77 species belonging to eight orders and 26 families. Data cover 26 continental countries in the Neotropics, ranging from Mexico and its frontier regions (southern Florida and coastal-central Florida in the southeast United States) to Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay, and the 13 countries of Caribbean islands. Our data set also includes neotropical species (e.g., Callithrix sp., Myocastor coypus, Nasua nasua) considered alien in particular areas of Neotropics. The most numerous species in terms of records are from Bos sp. (n = 37,782), Sus scrofa (n = 6,730), and Canis familiaris (n = 10,084); 17 species were represented by only one record (e.g., Syncerus caffer, Cervus timorensis, Cervus unicolor, Canis latrans). Primates have the highest number of species in the data set (n = 20 species), partly because of uncertainties regarding taxonomic identification of the genera Callithrix, which includes the species Callithrix aurita, Callithrix flaviceps, Callithrix geoffroyi, Callithrix jacchus, Callithrix kuhlii, Callithrix penicillata, and their hybrids. This unique data set will be a valuable source of information on invasion risk assessments, biodiversity redistribution and conservation-related research. There are no copyright restrictions.
