    Presence of extra-pulmonary treatable traits in people with COPD increases the likelihood of responding to pulmonary rehabilitation

    Introduction: Evidence suggests that people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who have worse clinical status (e.g., higher symptom burden) at baseline respond better to pulmonary rehabilitation. Identification of treatable traits in this population might help to better distinguish responders from non-responders, which could aid optimisation of the intervention in the future. This study aimed to explore the impact of pulmonary rehabilitation on extra-pulmonary traits of people with COPD and whether the presence of these treatable traits at baseline influences the type of response (responder or non-responder) to pulmonary rehabilitation. Methods: An observational retrospective study was conducted. A comprehensive extra-pulmonary treatable traits’ assessment including symptoms (dyspnoea, fatigue, anxiety, and depression), functional status, balance, impact of the disease and healthrelated quality of life, was conducted before and after a 12-week com-munity-based pulmonary rehabilitation programme. Pre-post differences between people with or without each TT were compared with independent samples t-tests or Mann-Whitney U tests. The proportion of responders between groups (with or without treatable traits) were explored with chi-square tests and odds ratio. Results: A total of 102 people with COPD (70 [65; 75] years old, 78% male, FEV1 47 [36; 60]% predicted) were included. People with COPD had a median [min-max] of 3 [0-7] treatable traits per person and each responded on average to 5 [0-9] outcomes of pulmonary rehabilitation. People with identified treatable traits at baseline were more responsive than those without them in all outcomes (p < 0.05) except for the 1-minute sit-to-stand test. The presence of treatable traits increased the likelihood of being a good responder in all outcomes (OR: 1.72-19.95) except for the 1-minute sit-to-stand test (p = 0.175).Conclusions: Identification of extra-pulmonary treatable traits in people with COPD showed potential to inform on pulmonary rehabilitation responsiveness and might therefore be an important strategy for patient selection, treatment personalisation and optimisation.publishe

    Is there variety × isolate interaction in the polygenic quantitative resistance of carrot to Alternaria dauci ?

    Get PDF
    Horizontal and polygenic resistance is race-nonspecific and, therefore, more durable, unlike vertical resistance, which is race-specific and unstable. However, this division is perhaps not so obvious since some cultivar × isolate interactions have already been observed for plant species with partial resistance. Carrot is known to be partially resistant to Alternaria dauci, but it is relevant for breeders to study cultivar × isolate interactions in order to develop durable resistant varieties. For this purpose, 12 highly diverse carrot genotypes and one segregating population were inoculated in a tunnel or in a glass house with 11 isolates of A. dauci that also represented a high diversity in terms of geographical origin, aggressiveness and genetic diversity. Disease severity values were assessed three times in the tunnel in a one-year experiment (2002) and twice in the glass house in an experiment over two consecutive years (2011 and 2012). The interaction of isolate with genotype was non-significant in the tunnel, and the same result was obtained in the glasshouse for both years of study except for the first scoring date in 2011, suggesting that the partial resistance of carrot to A. dauci is probably mainly explained by major QTLs that confer resistance to a large number of isolates and, potentially, some minor isolate-specific QTLs as well

    Magnetic field tuning of antiferromagnetic Yb3_{3}Pt4_{4}

    We present measurements of the specific heat, magnetization, magnetocaloric effect and magnetic neutron diffraction carried out on single crystals of antiferromagnetic Yb3_{3}Pt4_{4}, where highly localized Yb moments order at TN=2.4T_{\rm N}=2.4 K in zero field. The antiferromagnetic order was suppressed to TN→0T_{\rm N}\rightarrow 0 by applying a field of 1.85 T in the abab plane. Magnetocaloric effect measurements show that the antiferromagnetic phase transition is always continuous for TN>0T_{\rm N}>0, although a pronounced step in the magnetization is observed at the critical field in both neutron diffraction and magnetization measurements. These steps sharpen with decreasing temperature, but the related divergences in the magnetic susceptibility are cut off at the lowest temperatures, where the phase line itself becomes vertical in the field-temperature plane. As TN→0T_{\rm N}\rightarrow0, the antiferromagnetic transition is increasingly influenced by a quantum critical endpoint, where TNT_{\rm N} ultimately vanishes in a first order phase transition.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

    Efeito de diferentes dosagens de Fe3+ na germinação do girassol.

    O ferro é um micronutriente importante para plantas, pois está ligado à fotossíntese, na assimilação de alguns nutrientes e ao balanço hormonal, entretanto, existe uma carência de estudos sobre esse micronutriente relacionando-o ao desenvolvimento fenológico do girassol (Helianthus annuus L.), principalmente durante a germinação. Dessa maneira, o trabalho objetivou verificar os efeitos de soluções com diferentes concentrações de Fe3+ no potencial de germinativo das sementes do girassol. O experimento foi realizado em condições de laboratório com a variedade BRS 324 e com dosagens de ferro de 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 300 e 500 mg L-1 sendo quatro sub-amostras de cinqüenta, para cada tratamento. Os resultados obtidos por este estudo demonstram que diferentes dosagens de Fe3+ influenciam na quantidade, na qualidade e na produtividade da germinação do girassol. As sementes em meio férrico tiveram um bom desenvolvimento, mesmo nas maiores concentrações, porém ressalta-se que são necessários mais estudos cientificos, interligando o micronutriente ferro ao desenvolvimento inicial do girassol

    Aharonov-Bohm interference in quantum ring exciton: effects of built-in electric fields

    Get PDF
    We report a comprehensive discussion of quantum interference effects due to the finite structure of excitons in quantum rings and their first experimental corroboration observed in the optical recombinations. Anomalous features that appear in the experiments are analyzed according to theoretical models that describe the modulation of the interference pattern by temperature and built-in electric fields.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure
