Airflow design in refrigerated retail display cabinets and its impact on food quality

© 2019 International Institute of Refrigeration. All rights reserved. This paper investigates how refrigerated display cabinet airflow design can enhance temperature distribution and potentially reduce food waste. Conventional refrigerated retail cabinets have a single column of cold air from the top to the bottom of the merchandising envelope. By contrast separating the retail space into individual cells, each with its own shorter air-curtain reduces infiltration and improves temperature control. The quality and safety of bagged salad over an extended display period was evaluated in a conventional and multiple short air-curtain cabinet. At the end of the test period there was a visible difference in cabinet temperature and relative humidity, which had a direct impact on the salad organoleptic quality and microbiological safety. The temperature band was 11.2ºC and 5.4ºC in the conventional and multiple air curtain cabinets respectively, resulting in a higher degree of salad wilting and shrivelling and an increase on total yeast counts on the conventional cabinet

Children’s attitudes toward older people: current and future directions

    Get PDF
The children of today will be the adults of tomorrow and thus their attitudes toward older people lay the ground for their future self-concept and psychological well-being. Understanding how young children perceive older people is thus of crucial importance in an ageing world. The literature suggests mixed findings regarding the existence of ageism among children, which may be an artifact of the diversity measures used. This chapter presents a literature review that assesses most of these measures to assess children’s attitudes regarding older people and the assorted findings. We propose a classification based on two criteria: (i) the dimensions covered – cognitive, affective and behavioral (tripartite model of attitudes) and (ii) the four automaticity features (consciousness, controllability, intentionality and efficacy) which together led us to classify measures into three categories: solely explicit, solely implicit and partially both explicit and implicit measures. Based on this categorization, we delineate distinct patterns of results, associated with the participant’s age. In studies using explicit measures or a combination of both explicit and implicit measures, children revealed more positive or mixed attitudes regarding older people. The most positive attitudes were found in studies with older children and adolescents (e.g. using the Tuckman-Lorge Older People Scale”). When implicit measures were used, a different pattern of results emerged. Children expressed negative attitudes toward older people across childhood (e.g. behavioral measure). Based on this pattern of evidence, we make recommendations regarding the improvement of measures to assess children’s attitudes toward older people at different points in their social development.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Ab-initio angle and energy resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with time-dependent density-functional theory

We present a time-dependent density-functional method able to describe the photoelectron spectrum of atoms and molecules when excited by laser pulses. This computationally feasible scheme is based on a geometrical partitioning that efficiently gives access to photoelectron spectroscopy in time-dependent density-functional calculations. By using a geometrical approach, we provide a simple description of momentum-resolved photoe- mission including multi-photon effects. The approach is validated by comparison with results in the literature and exact calculations. Furthermore, we present numerical photoelectron angular distributions for randomly oriented nitrogen molecules in a short near infrared intense laser pulse and helium-(I) angular spectra for aligned carbon monoxide and benzene.Comment: Accepted for publication on Phys. R-symmetric Gauge Mediation and the MRSSM

This is an invited summary of a seminar talk given at various institutions in the United States and Canada. After a brief introduction, a review of the minimal R-symmetric supersymmetric standard model is given, and the benefits to the flavor sector are discussed. R-symmetric gauge mediation is an attempt to realize this model using metastable supersymmetry breaking techniques. Sample low energy spectra are presented and tuning is discussed. Various other phenomenological results are summarized.Comment: 14 pages, invited Brief Review, submitted to Modern Physics Letters A; v2: replaced Figure 1, updated acknowledgments, fixed typo
