    The influence of a verbal prompt on school lunch fruit consumption: a pilot study

    BACKGROUND: This study evaluated an environmental intervention intended to increase consumption of the fruit serving among elementary school children participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). METHODS: Children's fruit consumption was measured in two schools by observation. In the intervention school, cafeteria workers provided the verbal prompt, "Would you like fruit or juice with your lunch?" as the children stood in line in front of the fruit serving options. The control school had the same fruit and 100% juice options available, but the cafeteria workers did not provide a verbal prompt to take a fruit serving. Two variables were assessed: (1) Did children leave the lunch line with a fruit serving on their trays? and (2) Did they subsequently eat the fruit serving? RESULTS: The average percentage of children who took a fruit serving was 60% in the control school and 90% in the intervention school. In both schools, approximately 80% of children ate the fruit on their tray. As a result, nearly 70% of the children in the intervention school consumed a fruit serving at lunch, while fewer than 40% did so in the control school. CONCLUSION: A simple verbal prompt appears to have a significant impact on the likelihood that children will take, and subsequently consume, a fruit serving as part of their purchased school lunch. If these findings are replicated, policymakers may consider adding verbal prompts to the serving policy of the NSLP in an effort to increase fruit consumption among school children

They also analyzed marketing tactics for 23 companies that advertised these products, including amount spent to advertise in all media; child and teen exposure to advertising and brand appearances on TV and visits to beverage company websites, including differences for black and Hispanic youth; advertising on websites popular with children and teens; and marketing in newer media like mobile apps and social media.     Universal school meals and associations with student participation, attendance, academic performance, diet quality, food security, and Body Mass Index: A systematic review

    The school environment plays an important role in children\u27s diets and overall health, and policies for universal free school meals have the potential to contribute to positive child health outcomes. This systematic review evaluates studies examining the association between universal free school meals and students\u27 school meal participation rates, diets, attendance, academic performance, and Body Mass Index (BMI), as well as school finances. The search was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). A search for studies published in economically developed countries published through December 2020 was performed in PubMed, Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), Thomson Reuters\u27 Web of Science, and Academic Search Ultimate, followed by examining the references in the resultant literature. A total of 47 studies were identified and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was applied to assess bias. Nearly all studies examining universal free school meals found positive associations with school meal participation. Most studies examining universal free school meals that included free lunch found positive associations with diet quality, food security, and academic performance; however, the findings of studies examining only universal free breakfast were mixed. Research findings were similarly mixed when examining attendance as an outcome. Concerns about adverse outcomes on student BMI were not supported by the literature; in fact, several studies detected a potentially protective effect of universal free school meals on BMI. Research examining the impact of universal free meals on school finances was limited, but suggest that lower-income school districts in the U.S. may have positive financial outcomes from participation in universal free school meal provisions. Additionally, providing free meals to students may be associated with improved household incomes, particularly among lower-income families with children. Further research is needed to examine the financial implications of universal free meals for both school districts and families. Overall, universal free school meals may have multiple benefits for students and countries should consider universal free school meal provisions with strong nutrition guidelines.     Immune Responses but No Protection against SHIV by Gene-Gun Delivery of HIV-1 DNA Followed by Recombinant Subunit Protein Boosts

    AbstractThe efficacy of combining immunization with human immunodeficiency vitus type 1 (HIV-1) DNA and HIV-1 recombinant proteins to obtain protection from chimeric simian/human immunodeficiency virus (SHIV) was determined. Four cynomolgus monkeys received four gene-gun immunizations intraepidermally of plasmid DNA encoding HIV-1laienv(gp160),gag, tat, nef,andrevproteins. Ten micrograms of DNA was used per immunization. The animals were boosted twice intramuscularly with 50 μg of HIV-1laiEnv (MicroGeneSys), Gag, Tat, Nef, and Rev recombinant proteins mixed in Ribi adjuvant. The antibody responses were amplified following the administration of the recombinant subunit boosts. One month after the final subunit immunization, the vaccinated animals together with four control animals were challenged intravenously with 10 monkey infectious doses of SHIV that expresses theenv, tatandrevgenes of HIV-1 and gag and nef from SIV. However, only low titers of neutralizing antibodies were present at the day of challenge. The consecutive HIV-1 DNA and recombinant protein immunizations induced B- and T-cell responses but not protection against SHIV replication nor reduction of the viral load

    Objective: The US Food and Drug Administration and Institute of Medicine are currently investigating front-of-package (FOP) food labelling systems to provide sciencebased guidance to the food industry. The present paper reviews the literature on FOP labelling and supermarket shelf-labelling systems published or under review by February 2011 to inform current investigations and identify areas of future research. Design: A structured search was undertaken of research studies on consumer use, understanding of, preference for, perception of and behaviours relating to FOP/ shelf labelling published between January 2004 and February 2011. Results: Twenty-eight studies from a structured search met inclusion criteria. Reviewed studies examined consumer preferences, understanding and use of different labelling systems as well as label impact on purchasing patterns and industry product reformulation. Conclusions: The findings indicate that the Multiple Traffic Light system has most consistently helped consumers identify healthier products; however, additional research on different labelling systems ’ abilities to influence consumer behaviour is needed. In May 2010 the White House Childhood Obesity Task Force highlighted the need to ‘empower parents and caregivers to make healthy choices ’ with simple, practical information, including improved front-of-package (FOP) food labels (1). Currently the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has undertaken a Front-of-Package Labeling Initiative (2) with the goal of reviewing available evidence on FOP labelling systems to determine whether one approach can be recommended over others.
