    Generalized dynamics of moving dislocations in quasicrystals

    A theoretical framework for dislocation dynamics in quasicrystals is provided according to the continuum theory of dislocations. Firstly, we present the fundamental theory for moving dislocations in quasicrystals giving the dislocation density tensors and introducing the dislocation current tensors for the phonon and phason fields, including the Bianchi identities. Next, we give the equations of motion for the incompatible elastodynamics as well as for the incompatible elasto-hydrodynamics of quasicrystals. We continue with the derivation of the balance law of pseudomomentum thereby obtaining the generalized forms of the Eshelby stress tensor, the pseudomomentum vector, the dynamical Peach-Koehler force density and the Cherepanov force density for quasicrystals. The form of the dynamical Peach-Koehler force for a straight dislocation is obtained as well. Moreover, we deduce the balance law of energy that gives rise to the generalized forms of the field intensity vector and the elastic power density of quasicrystals. The above balance laws are produced for both models. The differences between the two models and their consequences are revealed.     Transmission of government spending shocks in the euro area: Time variation and driving forces

    This paper provides new evidence on the effects of government spending shocks and the fiscal transmission mechanism in the euro area for the period 1980-2008. Our contribution is two-fold. First, we investigate changes in the macroeconomic impact of government spending shocks using time-varying structural VAR techniques. The results show that the short-run effectiveness of government spending in stabilizing real GDP and private consumption has increased until the end-1980s but it has decreased thereafter. Moreover, government spending multipliers at longer horizons have declined substantially over the sample period. We also observe a weaker response of real wages and a stronger response of the nominal interest rate to spending shocks. Second, we provide econometric evidence on the driving forces behind the observed time variation of spending multipliers. We find that a higher ratio of credit to households over GDP, a smaller share of government investment and a larger share of public wages over total government spending have led to decreasing contemporaneous multipliers. At the same time, our results indicate that higher government debt-to-GDP ratios have negatively affected long-term multipliers.     The title compound, C2H2·C12H24O6·2NH3, was formed by co-crystallization of 18-crown-6 and acetylene in liquid ammonia. The 18-crown-6 molecule has threefold rotoinversion symmetry. The acteylene molecule lies on the threefold axis and the whole molecule is generated by an inversion center. The two ammonia molecules are also located on the threefold axis and are related by inversion symmetry. In the crystal, the ammonia molecules are located below and above the crown ether plane and are connected by intermolecular N-H...O hydrogen bonds. The acetylene molecules are additionally linked by weak C-H...N interactions into chains that propagate in the direction of the crystallographic c axis.     Improved optical activation of ion-implanted Zn acceptors in GaN by annealing under N2 overpressure

    We investigated the properties of ion-implanted GaN:Zn annealed under various conditions using photoluminescence (PL) and high resolution x-ray diffraction (HRXRD). Epitaxial GaN/sapphire of high optical quality was ion-implanted with a 1013 cm−2 dose of Zn+ ions at 200 keV. The sample was capped with 200 Å of SiNx and then diced into numerous pieces which were annealed under varied conditions in an attempt to optically activate the Zn. Annealing was performed in a tube furnace under flowing N2, an atmospheric pressure MOCVD reactor under flowing NH3 or N2, and under an N2 overpressure of 190 atm. The observed improvement in the optical quality of GaN:Zn annealed under N2 overpressure yields further insights into the trade-off between defect annealing and N loss from the GaN crysta

    Association of differential miRNA expression with hepatic vs. peritoneal metastatic spread in colorectal cancer

    Background: Though peritoneal carcinomatosis reflects a late stage of colorectal cancer (CRC), only few patients present with synchronous or metachronous liver metastases alongside their peritoneal carcinomatosis. It is hypothesized that this phenomenon may be causally linked to molecular characteristics of the primary CRC. This study used miRNA profiling of primary CRC tissue either metastasized to the liver, to the peritoneum or not metastasized at all thus to identify miRNAs potentially associated with defining the site of metastatic spread in CRC. Methods: Tissue of the primary tumor stemming from CRC patients diagnosed for either liver metastasis (LM; n = 10) or peritoneal carcinomatosis (PER; n = 10) was analyzed in this study. Advanced CRC cases without metastasis (M0; n = 3) were also included thus to select on those miRNAs most potentially associated with determining metastatic spread in general. miRNA profiling of 754 different miRNAs was performed in each group. MiRNAs being either differentially expressed comparing PER and LM or even triple differentially expressed (PER vs. LM vs. M0) were identified. Differentially expressed miRNAs were further validated by in silico and functional analysis. Results: Comparative analysis identified 41 miRNAs to be differentially expressed comparing primary tumors metastasized to the liver as opposed to those spread to the peritoneum. A set of 31 miRNAs was significantly induced in primary tumors that spread to the peritoneum (PER), while the remaining 10 miRNAs were found to be repressed. Out of these 41 miRNAs a number of 25 miRNAs was triple-differentially expressed (i.e. differentially expressed comparing LM vs. PER vs. M0). The latter underwent in silico analysis. Finally, we demonstrated that miR-31 down-regulated c-MET in DLD-1 colon cancer cells. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that CRC primary tumors spread to the peritoneum vs. metastasized to the liver display significantly different miRNA profiles. Larger patient cohorts will be needed to validate whether determination of e.g. miR-31 may aid to predict the course of disease and whether this may help to create individualized follow up or treatment protocols. To determine whether certain miRNAs may be involved in regulating the metastatic potential of CRC, functional studies will be essential

    Contrast-enhanced multislice computer tomography (MSCT) has established itself as the standard tomographic imaging method both for diagnosis and for treatment monitoring of hepatic lesions. To clarify local conditions before partial liver resection, diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance tomography (DWI-MRT) can also provide important additional information. In order to meet the criteria for a R0 resection, a margin of 0.5 mm seems to be sufficient. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy aiming to reduce tumour size can be given in parallel with portal artery embolisation without adversely affecting perioperative morbidity and mortality. As far as the management of primary resectable liver metastases is concerned, there is an urgent need for more studies. Despite the relatively limited evidence, adjuvant chemotherapy is currently more widely favoured in Germany than perioperative chemotherapy. There is also considerable need for studies concerning preoperative therapy in patients with liver metastases that are not (yet) resectable. In KRAS wild-type tumours, high response rates (in terms of a reduction in the size of metastases) are achieved with a cetuximab/chemotherapy combination. Bevacizumab/chemotherapy combinations lead to high rates of pathohistological complete and partial remissions. What the best parameter for judging the success of preoperative therapy is remains unknown, and so comparison studies using survival as a `hard' endpoint must be carried out
