Universities in the Market for Continuing Higher Education
The purpose of the paper is to explain why and how American universities have taken the lead in continuing education compared to their European counterparts. In a first step we will discuss different notions of continuing education and develop an analytical framework to handle its various forms. In a second step, we will develop a theoretical typology in the form of a morphography in order to scrutinize the basic structures of a system of continuing higher education. Third, using our morphography, we will introduce some empirical insight from a case study that was pursued at the Pennsylvania State University in July and August 2001. We con-clude with our assessments as to which elements from the American system of higher and con-tinuing education may be transferable to the European tradition.Continuing Education;Higher Education;Morphography
Biological excess phosphorus removal in activated sludge systems
Includes bibliographies. When this investigation was commenced in 1983 two activated sludge systems had been developed in South Africa that accomplish biological excess phosphorus (P) removal, the UCT and modified Bardenpho systems. To predict the P removal in these systems, an empirical model had been developed. In the empirical model, P removal was formulated in terms of some of the system parameters, such as anaerobic mass fraction, available readily biodegradable COD and active mass concentration. Organisms directly implicated in biological excess P removal (poly P organisms) did not feature in the model and the P removal was not linked to any basic biological or biochemical behaviour. Clearly, there was a need for a more fundamentally based model. The objective of this thesis was to develop such a model

An investigation of the impact of young children's self-knowledge of trustworthiness on school adjustment: a test of the realistic self-knowledge and positive illusion models
The study aimed to examine the relationship between self-knowledge of trustworthiness and young children’s school adjustment. One hundred and seventy-three (84 male and 89 female) children from school years 1 and 2 in the United Kingdom (mean age 6 years 2 months) were tested twice over one year. Children’s trustworthiness was assessed using: (a) self-report at Time 1 and Time 2, (b) peers’ reports at Time 1 and Time 2, and (c) teacher-reports at Time 2. School adjustment was assessed by child-rated school-liking and the Short-Form Teacher Rating Scale of School Adjustment. Longitudinal quadratic relationships were found between school adjustment and children’s self-knowledge, using peer-reported trustworthiness as a reference: more accurate self-knowledge of trustworthiness predicted increases in school adjustment. Comparable concurrent quadratic relationships were found between teacher-rated school adjustment and children’s self-knowledge, using teacher-reported trustworthiness as a reference, at Time 2. The findings support the conclusion that young children’s psychosocial adjustment is best accounted for by the realistic self-knowledge model (Colvin & Block, 1994)

Sex-Specific Variances in Anatomy and Blood Flow of the Left Main Coronary Bifurcation: Implications for Coronary Artery Disease Risk
Studies have shown marked sex disparities in Coronary Artery Diseases (CAD)
epidemiology, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We explored sex
disparities in the coronary anatomy and the resulting haemodynamics in patients
with suspected, but no significant CAD. Left Main (LM) bifurcations were
reconstructed from CTCA images of 127 cases (42 males and 85 females, aged 38
to 81). Detailed shape parameters were measured for comparison, including
bifurcation angles, curvature, and diameters, before solving the haemodynamic
metrics using CFD. The severity and location of the normalised vascular area
exposed to physiologically adverse haemodynamics were statistically compared
between sexes for all branches. We found significant differences between sexes
in potentially adverse haemodynamics. Females were more likely than males to
exhibit adversely low Time Averaged Endothelial Shear Stress along the inner
wall of a bifurcation (16.8% vs. 10.7%). Males had a higher percentage of areas
exposed to both adversely high Relative Residence Time (6.1% vs 4.2%, p=0.001)
and high Oscillatory Shear Index (4.6% vs 2.3%, p<0.001). However, the OSI
values were generally small and should be interpreted cautiously. Males had
larger arteries (M vs F, LM: 4.0mm vs 3.3mm, LAD: 3.6mm 3.0mm, LCX:3.5mm vs
2.9mm), and females exhibited higher curvatures in all three branches (M vs F,
LM: 0.40 vs 0.46, LAD: 0.45 vs 0.51, LCx: 0.47 vs 0.55, p<0.001) and larger
inflow angle of the LM trunk (M: 12.9{\deg} vs F: 18.5{\deg}, p=0.025).
Haemodynamic differences were found between male and female patients, which may
contribute, at least in part, to differences in CAD risk. This work may
facilitate a better understanding of sex differences in the clinical
presentation of CAD, contributing to improved sex-specific screening,
especially relevant for women with CAD who currently have worse predictive
outcomes.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure
