Inversion kinematics at deep-seated gravity slope deformations revealed by trenching techniques
Abstract. We compare data from three deep-seated gravitational slope deformations (DSGSDs) where palaeoseismological techniques were applied in artificial trenches. At all trenches, located in metamorphic rocks of the Italian Alps, there is evidence of extensional deformation given by normal movements along slip planes dipping downhill or uphill, and/or fissures, as expected in gravitational failure. However, we document and illustrate – with the aid of trenching – evidence of reverse movements. The reverse slips occurred mostly along the same planes along which normal slip occurred, and they produced drag folds in unconsolidated Holocene sediments as well as the superimposition of substrate rocks on Holocene sediments. The studied trenches indicate that reverse slip might occur not only at the toe portions of DSGSDs but also in their central-upper portions. When the age relationships between the two deformation kinematics can be determined, they clearly indicate that reverse slips postdate normal ones. Our data suggest that, during the development of long-lived DSGSDs, inversion kinematics may occur in different sectors of the unstable rock mass. The inversion is interpreted as due either to locking of the frontal blocks of a DSGSD or to the relative decrease in the rate of downward movement in the frontal blocks with respect to the rear blocks
Advancing the science of cancer cost measurement: challenges and opportunities
Cancer accounts for a major proportion of national health expenditures,
which are expected to increase in the future. This paper aims to identify major challenges
with estimating cancer related costs, and discuss international comparisons, and
recommendations for future research.
Methods. It starts from the experience of an international workshop aimed at comparing
cancer burden evaluation methods, improving results comparability, discussing strengths
and criticisms of different approaches.
Results. Three methodological themes necessary to inform the analysis are identified
and discussed: data availability; costs definition; epidemiological measures.
Conclusions. Cost evaluation is applied to cancer control interventions and is relevant
for public health planners. Despite their complexity, international comparisons are
fundamental to improve, generalize and extend cost evaluation to different contexts
Investigating the high energy QCD approaches for prompt photon production at the LHC
We investigate the rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of the
prompt photon production at the CERN LHC energies considering the current
perturbative QCD approaches for this scattering process. Namely, we compare the
predictions from the usual NLO pQCD calculations to the the color dipole
formalism, using distinct dipole cross sections. Special attention is paid to
parton saturation models at high energies, which are expected to be important

Geosite assessment and communication: a review
This work is aimed at reviewing the current state of the art in geosite selection, assessment, and communication. We first highlight the main papers that have defined paramount concepts such as geodiversity, geoheritage, and geosites. We then delve into the theoretical principles and guidelines that have been proposed over the last twenty years by researchers who have thoroughly illustrated how to individuate and assess geosites. In doing so, we illustrate notable field examples of applications of qualitative and quantitative assessments of geosites in places such as Serbia, India, Iceland, Ecuador, Sardinia (Italy), Egypt, Tasmania (Australia), and Brazil. The third part of this work is dedicated to illustrating a list (by no means exhaustive) of works that have tried to come up with innovative tools, strategies, and solutions to promote and communicate geosites. From our work, it appears that geosites can be extremely effective as fully fledged outreach tools capable of bridging the gap between Earth science and the lay public
Nuclear Medium Effects in Production at HERA-B
In this paper we estimate the influence of the shadowing effect and initial
state parton energy loss in the quarkonium production at HERA-B. We analyze the
behavior of the effective exponent and present a
comparison with the preliminary HERA-B data for production. Moreover,

Trichobezoars are concretions formed by the accumulation of hair or fibers in the gastrointestinal tract, usually associated with underlying psychiatric disorders in females between 13 and 20 years old. Endoscopy, the gold standard for diagnosis, brings some additional advantages: sample taking, size reducing and, rarely, mass removal. This study shows that endoscopy can cause severe complications resulting in a surgical emergency

Diffractive Higgs boson production at the Tevatron and LHC
Improved possibilities to find the Higgs boson in diffractive events, having
less hadronic activity, depend on whether the cross section is large enough.
Based on the soft color interaction models that successfully describe
diffractive hard scattering at HERA and the Tevatron, we find that only a few
diffractive Higgs events may be produced at the Tevatron, but we predict a
