Possible detection of singly-ionized oxygen in the Type Ia SN 2010kg
We present direct spectroscopic modeling of 11 high-S/N observed spectra of
the Type Ia SN 2010kg, taken between -10 and +5 days with respect to B-maximum.
The synthetic spectra, calculated with the SYN++ code, span the range between
4100 and 8500 \r{A}. Our results are in good agreement with previous findings
for other Type Ia SNe. Most of the spectral features are formed at or close to
the photosphere, but some ions, like Fe II and Mg II, also form features at
~2000 - 5000 km s above the photosphere. The well-known high-velocity
features of the Ca II IR-triplet as well as Si II 6355 are also
detected.
The single absorption feature at ~4400 \r{A}, which usually has been
identified as due to Si III, is poorly fit with Si III in SN 2010kg. We find
that the fit can be improved by assuming that this feature is due to either C
III or O II, located in the outermost part of the ejecta, ~4000 - 5000 km
s above the photosphere. Since the presence of C III is unlikely,
because of the lack of the necessary excitation/ionization conditions in the
outer ejecta, we identify this feature as due to O II. The simultaneous
presence of O I and O II is in good agreement with the optical depth
calculations and the temperature distribution in the ejecta of SN 2010kg. This
could be the first identification of singly ionized oxygen in a Type Ia SN

Low-latency analysis pipeline for compact binary coalescences in the advanced gravitational wave detector era
The multi-band template analysis (MBTA) pipeline is a low-latency coincident
analysis pipeline for the detection of gravitational waves (GWs) from compact
binary coalescences. MBTA runs with a low computational cost, and can identify
candidate GW events online with a sub-minute latency. The low computational
running cost of MBTA also makes it useful for data quality studies. Events
detected by MBTA online can be used to alert astronomical partners for
electromagnetic follow-up. We outline the current status of MBTA and give
details of recent pipeline upgrades and validation tests that were performed in
preparation for the first advanced detector observing period. The MBTA pipeline
is ready for the outset of the advanced detector era and the exciting prospects

Rapid progesterone actions on thymulin-secreting epithelial cells cultured from rat thymus
Many soluble factors of neural, endocrine, paracrine and autocrine origin are present in the thymus and modulate its function. Long-term effects of sex steroids have! been documented for thymocytes and cells of the thymic microenvironment. In this report we examine rapid actions of progesterone upon aspects of epithelial cell physiology. Progesterone (0.1-10 mu M) was applied to cultured thymulin-secreting thymic epithelial cells (TS-TEC) and changes in transmembrane potential, transmembrane current, intracellular calcium levels and thymulin secretion were assessed. Rapid changes in electrophysiology and intracellular calcium provide evidence for a membrane-bound progesterone receptor in these cells, in addition to classical cytoplasmic receptors. Application of progesterone to TS-TEC caused electrophysiological changes in 56% of cells (n = 40), activating an inward current (-24 +/- 9 pA at 1 mu M, n = 7, p < 0.02) and dose-dependent depolarization (7.1 +/- 1.8 mV at 1 mu M, n = 19, p < 0.01). Intracellular calcium levels, monitored by the ratiometric fluorescent calcium indicator fura-2, increased within seconds of progesterone (1 mu M) application. Progesterone(1 mu M) increased thymulin levels in supernatant, as measured by ELISA, above the levels in the preapplication period (142 +/- 16% of the preapplication period, n = 3, p < 0.02). This effect was reduced in the presence of cobalt chloride which blocks voltage-dependent calcium channels. In addition, TS-IEC in culture were immunoreactive to antibody AG7. This antibody was raised to a membrane-bound antigen involved in calcium influx subsequent to progesterone binding in sperm. thus we suggest that progesterone acts upon many aspects of TS-TEC physiology through both cytoplasmic and membrane-bound receptors
On the locus formed by the maximum heights of projectile motion with air resistance
We present an analysis on the geometrical place formed by the set of maxima
of the trajectories of a projectile launched in a media with linear drag. Such
a place, the locus of apexes, is written in term of the Lambert function in
polar coordinates, confirming the special role played by this function in the
problem. In order to characterize the locus, a study of its curvature is
presented in two parameterizations, in terms of the launch angle and in the
polar one. The angles of maximum curvature are compared with other important
angles in the projectile problem. As an addendum, we find that the synchronous

Online, interactive user guidance for high-dimensional, constrained motion planning
We consider the problem of planning a collision-free path for a
high-dimensional robot. Specifically, we suggest a planning framework where a
motion-planning algorithm can obtain guidance from a user. In contrast to
existing approaches that try to speed up planning by incorporating experiences
or demonstrations ahead of planning, we suggest to seek user guidance only when
the planner identifies that it ceases to make significant progress towards the
goal. Guidance is provided in the form of an intermediate configuration
, which is used to bias the planner to go through . We
demonstrate our approach for the case where the planning algorithm is
Multi-Heuristic A* (MHA*) and the robot is a 34-DOF humanoid. We show that our
approach allows to compute highly-constrained paths with little domain
knowledge. Without our approach, solving such problems requires
carefully-crafting domain-dependent heuristics
Near-IR studies of recurrent nova V745 Scorpii during its 2014 outburst
The recurrent nova (RN) V745 Scorpii underwent its third known outburst on
2014 February 6. Infrared monitoring of the eruption on an almost daily basis,
starting from 1.3d after discovery, shows the emergence of a powerful blast
wave generated by the high velocity nova ejecta exceeding 4000 kms
plowing into its surrounding environment. The temperature of the shocked gas is
raised to a high value exceeding 10K immediately after outburst
commencement. The energetics of the outburst clearly surpass those of similar
symbiotic systems like RS Oph and V407 Cyg which have giant secondaries. The
shock does not show a free-expansion stage but rather shows a decelerative
Sedov-Taylor phase from the beginning. Such strong shockfronts are known to be
sites for ray generation. V745 Sco is the latest nova, apart from five
other known novae, to show ray emission. It may be an important
testbed to resolve the crucial question whether all novae are generically
ray emitters by virtue of having a circumbinary reservoir of material
that is shocked by the ejecta rather than ray generation being
restricted to only symbiotic systems with a shocked red giant (RG) wind. The
lack of a free-expansion stage favors V745 Sco to have a density enhancement
around the white dwarf (WD), above that contributed by a RG wind. Our analysis
also suggests that the WD in V745 Sco is very massive and a potential
progenitor for a future SN Ia explosion.Comment: To appear in ApJ (Letters
Measuring ^{12}C(&alpha,&gamma)^{16}O from White Dwarf Asteroseismology
During helium burning in the core of a red giant, the relative rates of the
3&alpha and ^{12}C(&alpha,&gamma)^{16}O reactions largely determine the final
ratio of carbon to oxygen in the resulting white dwarf star. The uncertainty in
the 3&alpha reaction at stellar energies due to the extrapolation from
high-energy laboratory measurements is relatively small, but this is not the
case for the ^{12}C(&alpha,&gamma)^{16}O reaction. Recent advances in the
analysis of asteroseismological data on pulsating white dwarf stars now make it
possible to obtain precise measurements of the central ratio of carbon to
oxygen, providing a more direct way to measure the ^{12}C(&alpha,&gamma)^{16}O
reaction rate at stellar energies. We assess the systematic uncertainties of
this approach and quantify small shifts in the measured central oxygen
abundance originating from the observations and from model settings that are
kept fixed during the optimization. Using new calculations of white dwarf
internal chemical profiles, we find a rate for the ^{12}C(&alpha,&gamma)^{16}O
reaction that is significantly higher than most published values. The accuracy
of this method may improve as we modify some of the details of our description
of white dwarf interiors that were not accessible through previous
