Subchronic Toxicity of Copper Oxide Nanoparticles and Its Attenuation with the Help of a Combination of Bioprotectors

In the copper metallurgy workplace air is polluted with condensation aerosols, which a significant fraction of is presented by copper oxide particles <100 nm. In the scientific literature, there is a lack of their in vivo toxicity characterization and virtually no attempts of enhancing organism’s resistance to their impact. A stable suspension of copper oxide particles with mean (±SD) diameter 20 ± 10 nm was prepared by laser ablation of pure copper in water. It was being injected intraperitoneally to rats at a dose of 10 mg/kg (0.5 mg per mL of deionized water) three times a week up to 19 injections. In parallel, another group of rats was so injected with the same suspension against the background of oral administration of a “bio-protective complex” (BPC) comprising pectin, a multivitamin-multimineral preparation, some amino acids and fish oil rich in ω-3 PUFA. After the termination of injections, many functional and biochemical indices for the organism’s status, as well as pathological changes of liver, spleen, kidneys, and brain microscopic structure were evaluated for signs of toxicity. In the same organs we have measured accumulation of copper while their cells were used for performing the Random Amplification of Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) test for DNA fragmentation. The same features were assessed in control rats infected intraperitoneally with water with or without administration of the BPC. The copper oxide nanoparticles proved adversely bio-active in all respects considered in this study, their active in vivo solubilization in biological fluids playing presumably an important role in both toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics. The BPC proposed and tested by us attenuated systemic and target organs toxicity, as well as genotoxicity of this substance. Judging by experimental data obtained in this investigation, occupational exposures to nano-scale copper oxide particles can present a significant health risk while the further search for its management with the help of innocuous bioprotectors seems to be justified

Mechanochemical Synthesis and DC Electrical Conductivity of PANI-Based MWCNT Containing Nanocomposites with Te0 and Bi2Te3 Thermoelectric Nanophase

Nowadays, the search for the coupled polymer nanocomposite thermoelectrics that exhibit a high value of thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) and similar behaviour of physical properties for the use as legs of thermoelectric cells is a current challenge. The direct current (DC) conductivity is one of the three important components of thermoelectric figure of merit. The aim of this study was to obtain PANI-based nanothermoelectrics with Te0 and Bi2Te3 nanoparticles and MWCNT by mechanochemical methodology and to investigate the dependency of their DC electrical conductivity on temperature in the 298–353 K range using the Arrhenius and Mott’s variable range hopping (VRH) models. Inorganic Te0 and Bi2Te3 nanoparticles were pre-synthesized by the available and environmentally friendly method using a commercial tellurium powder. The samples obtained were characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The XRD study of ES-PANI/Te0 (4.4 wt% Te0) and ES-PANI/Bi2Te3 (2.9 wt% Bi2Te3) nanocomposites found that the nanoparticle average size was 32 nm and 17 nm, respectively. The DC conductivity study of the samples with different nanophase content (2.1, 4.4, 10.2 wt% Te0, 1.5, 2.9, 7.3 wt% Bi2Te3, 1.5 wt% MWCNT) by the two points measurement method reveals the following: (a) the presence of inorganic nanophase reduces the conductivity compared to the matrix, (b) the addition of MWCNT in ES-PANI increases its electrical conductivity, (c) the conductivity of ES-PANI/Te0 as well as ES-PANI/Bi2Te3 nanocomposite rises with the increasing inorganic nanophase content, (d) the observed increase in the electrical conductivity of MWCNT-based nanocomposites with increasing inorganic nanophase content is interrupted by a characteristic area of decrease in its value at average values of inorganic nanoparticles content (at Te0 content of 4.4 wt%, at Bi2Te3 content of 2.9 wt%), (e) a similar DC conductivity behaviour in ES-PANI/Te0—ES-PANI/Bi2Te3 and ES-PANI/Te0-MWCNT—ES-PANI/Bi2Te3-MWCNT nanocomposite pairs is observed

The Analysis of Acute and Subacute Toxicity of Silver Selenide Nanoparticles Encapsulated in Arabinogalactan Polymer Matrix

The acute and subacute toxicity of a newly synthesized silver selenide nanoparticles encapsulated in a natural polymeric matrix of arabinogalactan study has been studied. The nanocomposite is a promising material for the design of diagnostic and therapeutic drugs. It can also be used for the preparation of fluorescent labels and in thermal oncotherapy. The employment of binary nanocomposites enables one to unveil the potential hidden in metals which constitute these composites. The study of acute toxicity, carried out by the oral administration of nanocomposites at a dose of 2000 mg/kg, has shown that the compound belongs to low-toxic substances of the 5th hazard class. With the subacute oral administration of nanocomposites at a dose of 500 μg/kg, slight changes are observed in the brain tissue and liver of experimental animals, indicating the development of compensatory–adaptive reactions. In the kidneys, the area of the Shumlyansky–Bowman chamber decreases by 40.5% relative to the control group. It is shown that the application of the protective properties of selenium, which is contained in the composite, helps to reduce the toxicity of silver
