    Moduli spaces on the Kuznetsov component of Fano threefolds of index 2

    General hyperplane sections of a Fano threefold YY of index 2 and Picard rank 1 are del Pezzo surfaces, and their Picard group is related to a root system. To the corresponding roots, we associate objects in the Kuznetsov component of YY and investigate their moduli spaces, using the stability condition constructed by Bayer, Lahoz, Macr\`i, and Stellari, and the Abel--Jacobi map. We identify a subvariety of the moduli space isomorphic to YY itself, and as an application we prove a (refined) categorical Torelli theorem for general quartic double solids.Comment: 34 pages, substantially rewritten to improve exposition, references updated.     The role of crowd support on home advantage during COVID-19 restrictions on Italian football competitions. Comparison between 2018-19 and 2020-21 seasons of the Italian Serie A and Serie B championships

    The home advantage (HA) affects football competitions, especially due to the presence of crowd support. Even though several studies demonstrated that HA (which is influenced by the crowd) decreased in recent years, the empty stadia caused by COVID-19 restrictions offered unique situations to explore and quantify HA. For this reason, we aimed to assess HA in two seasons of the major Italian Championships. We conducted an observational study with the data from the last three seasons of the Italian football championship A-B series, analyzing a total of 2.964 individual game scores. To quantify the HA, the number of points won at home was calculated as a percentage of the total number of points won, home and away. In every season and for every team classification, HA was found (scored points > 50% in home matches). We reported a difference in HA median score for Serie B. Additionally, a difference was found in Serie A for middle-ranking HA median scores in the two seasons compared (p-value = 0.017), which was similarly found in Serie B (p-value = 0.009). The number of penalties was lower in the season with a crowd compared to one without a crowd (p = 0.001). The HA did not disappear in empty stadiums, so there must be other contributing factors. Additionally, we found that the referees were biased by the presence of the crowd in favor of the home teams, and this result could be considered by the football association during referees' training and formation

    Confirmation of increased and more severe adolescent mental health-related in-patient admissions in the COVID-19 pandemic aftermath: A 2-year follow-up study

    : COVID-19 pandemic may have affected youth's mental wellbeing. Youth admissions for mental health emergencies over the 2-year period following the COVID-19 outbreak (March 2020-February 2022) were compared to those occurring in the same period of 2018-2020, with reference to individual and clinical data. The study identified 30 admissions in the pre-pandemic period and 65 (+116.7%) in the post-pandemic period, with the latter being younger, less likely to have a personal psychiatric history, and more likely to receive psychopharmacological treatment. A higher likelihood of earlier, ex novo psychiatric manifestations, requiring medication to reach clinical stability, in the post-COVID era, is suggested

    Experimental and kinetic modeling study of pyrolysis and combustion of anisole

    open7siFast biomass pyrolysis is an effective process with high yields of bio-oil, and is a promising technology to partially replace non-renewable fossil fuels. Bio-oils are complex mixtures with a large amount of oxygenated organic species, such as esters, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, alcohols, and substituted aromatic components. Anisole is a simple surrogate of primary tar from lignin pyrolysis and it is very useful to investigate gas-phase reactions of methoxy-phenol species, expected precursors of poly-cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and soot during biomass pyrolysis and bio-oil combustion. This work first presents new pyrolysis data obtained in the Ghent flow reactor, and then it discusses a detailed kinetic mechanism of anisole pyrolysis and oxidation. This scheme is further validated and compared, not only with these pyrolysis data, but also with recently published data of anisole oxidation in jet stirred reactors. Ignition delay time and laminar flame speed computations complement these detailed comparisons.     Severe or life threatening infections are common among patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Most infections in the ICU are bacterial or fungal in origin and require antimicrobial therapy for clinical resolution. Antibiotics are the cornerstone of therapy for infected critically ill patients. However, antibiotics are often not optimally administered resulting in less favorable patient outcomes including greater mortality. The timing of antibiotics in patients with life threatening infections including sepsis and septic shock is now recognized as one of the most important determinants of survival for this population. Individuals who have a delay in the administration of antibiotic therapy for serious infections can have a doubling or more in their mortality. Additionally, the timing of an appropriate antibiotic regimen, one that is active against the offending pathogens based on in vitro susceptibility, also influences survival. Thus not only is early empiric antibiotic administration important but the selection of those agents is crucial as well. The duration of antibiotic infusions, especially for β-lactams, can also influence antibiotic efficacy by increasing antimicrobial drug exposure for the offending pathogen. However, due to mounting antibiotic resistance, aggressive antimicrobial de-escalation based on microbiology results is necessary to counterbalance the pressures of early broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy. In this review, we examine time related variables impacting antibiotic optimization as it relates to the treatment of life threatening infections in the ICU. In addition to highlighting the importance of antibiotic timing in the ICU we hope to provide an approach to antimicrobials that also minimizes the unnecessary use of these agents. Such approaches will increasingly be linked to advances in molecular microbiology testing and artificial intelligence/machine learning. Such advances should help identify patients needing empiric antibiotic therapy at an earlier time point as well as the specific antibiotics required in order to avoid unnecessary administration of broad-spectrum antibiotics

    A Product-Form Model for the Performance Evaluation of a Bandwidth Allocation Strategy in WSNs

    Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are important examples of Collective Adaptive System, which consist of a set of motes that are spatially distributed in an indoor or outdoor space. Each mote monitors its surrounding conditions, such as humidity, intensity of light, temperature, and vibrations, but also collects complex information, such as images or small videos, and cooperates with the whole set of motes forming the WSN to allow the routing process. The traffic in the WSN consists of packets that contain the data harvested by the motes and can be classified according to the type of information that they carry. One pivotal problem in WSNs is the bandwidth allocation among the motes. The problem is known to be challenging due to the reduced computational capacity of the motes, their energy consumption constraints, and the fully decentralised network architecture. In this article, we study a novel algorithm to allocate the WSN bandwidth among the motes by taking into account the type of traffic they aim to send. Under the assumption of a mesh network and Poisson distributed harvested packets, we propose an analytical model for its performance evaluation that allows a designer to study the optimal configuration parameters. Although the Markov chain underlying the model is not reversible, we show it to be.-reversible under a certain renaming of states. By an extensive set of simulations, we show that the analytical model accurately approximates the performance of networks that do not satisfy the assumptions. The algorithm is studied with respect to the achieved throughput and fairness. We show that it provides a good approximation of the max-min fairness requirements

    the study of inborn errors of immunity (IEI) provides unique opportunities to elucidate the microbiome and pathogenic mechanisms related to severe viral infection. several immunological and genetic anomalies may contribute to the susceptibility to develop human papillomavirus (HPV) pathogenesis. they include different acquired immunodeficiencies, EVER1-2 or CIB1 mutations underlying epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) syndrome and multiple IEI. whereas EV syndrome patients are specifically unable to control infections with beta HPV, individuals with IEI show broader infectious and immune phenotypes. the WHIM (warts, hypogammaglobulinemia, infection, and myelokathexis) syndrome caused by gain-of-CXCR4-function mutation manifests by HPV-induced extensive cutaneous warts but also anogenital lesions that eventually progress to dysplasia. Here we report alterations of B and NK cells in a female patient suffering from cutaneous and mucosal HPV-induced lesions due to an as-yet unidentified genetic defect. despite no detected mutations in CXCR4, B but not NK cells displayed a defective CXCR4-dependent chemotactic response toward CXCL12. In addition, NK cells showed an abnormal distribution with an expanded CD56(bright) cell subset and defective cytotoxicity of CD56(dim) cells. our observations extend the clinical and immunological spectrum of IEI associated with selective susceptibility toward HPV pathogenesis, thus providing new insight on the immune control of HPV infection and potential host susceptibility factors

    An animal model for the juvenile non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis

    11Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) are the hepatic manifestations of the metabolic syndrome; worrisome is the booming increase in pediatric age. To recreate the full spectrum of juvenile liver pathology and investigate the gender impact, male and female C57Bl/6 mice were fed with high fat diet plus fructose in the drinking water (HFHC) immediately after weaning (equal to 3-years old human), and disease progression followed for 16 weeks, until adults (equal to 30-years old human). 100% of subjects of both genders on HFHC diet developed steatosis in 4weeks, and some degree of fibrosis in 8weeks, with the 86% of males and 15% of females presenting a stage 2 fibrosis at 16weeks. Despite a similar final liver damage both groups, a sex difference in the pathology progression was observed. Alterations in glucose homeostasis, dyslipidemia, hepatomegaly and obese phenotype were evident from the very beginning in males with an increased hepatic inflammatory activity. Conversely, such alterations were present in females only at the end of the HFHC diet (with the exception of insulin resistance and the hepatic inflammatory state). Interestingly, only females showed an altered hepatic redox state.
