The Impact of Residential Treatment on Emotionally Disturbed Boys

Within the past four decades, social work has witnessed the development of increasingly specialized servicecs to children, among these a sort of “total impact therapy” generally defined as residential treatment. In conjunction with the basic social work values of the bio-psycho-social nature of human maladjustment, residential centres have attempted to help the child effect a happier adjustment to his life situation by meeting some ungratified basic need. Institutions for dependent children complimented those for custodial care of even isolation; contemporary residential treatment centres are designed to meet a broader range of needs of the child than those of forty years ago through a variety of approaches, often referred to as milieu therapy. Consideration of the common needs of children is basic to questions concerning the place of institutional treatment and the particular type of child for which this social work service is the most appropriate one. The residential treatment centre addresses the whole gamut of a child’s needs from physical care to rehabilitation. Exposure to, and participation in, a group life experience simulating as closely as possible the family or community life experience is the element differentiating residential care from other treatment modes. By involvement in the realities of his daily situation and the working through or resolution of these, the child is helped to cope with his own growth and development—physical, emotional, and social. Problems and questions examined in this paper revolve around the residential treatment centre defined vaguely by the Child Welfare League of America as “A building....maintained and operated by a chartered agency, organization or institution, whose main purpose is to provide shelter and care to a group of unrelated children and youths up to eighteen years of age.” More specifically, the concern for research, the proposal and plans for implementation are focused on Mount St. Joseph, an autonomous, non-profit institution providing care for boys with moderate to severe emotional disturbances

Control Function Assisted IPW Estimation with a Secondary Outcome in Case-Control Studies

Case-control studies are designed towards studying associations between risk factors and a single, primary outcome. Information about additional, secondary outcomes is also collected, but association studies targeting such secondary outcomes should account for the case-control sampling scheme, or otherwise results may be biased. Often, one uses inverse probability weighted (IPW) estimators to estimate population effects in such studies. However, these estimators are inefficient relative to estimators that make additional assumptions about the data generating mechanism. We propose a class of estimators for the effect of risk factors on a secondary outcome in case-control studies, when the mean is modeled using either the identity or the log link. The proposed estimator combines IPW with a mean zero control function that depends explicitly on a model for the primary disease outcome. The efficient estimator in our class of estimators reduces to standard IPW when the model for the primary disease outcome is unrestricted, and is more efficient than standard IPW when the model is either parametric or semiparametric

Feminism and the Legalization of Prostitution: How far down the river?

One of the most telling issues on the state of the women\u27s movement today is that of the legalization of prostitution. It would be inappropriate to say that the issue has caused a breach in the ranks: the term is inapplicable to a movement which has never claimed coherency and which has, in fact, consistently demonstrated an inability to reconcile the views of its various factions. The prostitution issue is important, rather, precisely because it underscores these differences of analysis and tactics which have appeared in other areas and the splits between white middle class liberal women, radical feminists, marxist socialists and working class and minority women which have characterized the movement since its inception. It is a cutting edge issue because its resolution will signal either the reassertion of a new model of equality for all women or the acceptance of second-class citizenship for one group of them. The swing vote lies with the middle class liberals because their forte has been legislative and legal action and because they are now developing the capacity to resolve the issue in these terms. The ability to accurately estimate balloon burst altitude is important when modeling balloon flight predictions in preparation for a high altitude balloon launch. Variables considered for the study of burst altitude include the time of day of the flight, the manufacturer of the balloon, and the ascent rate of the balloon during the last ten minutes before burst. Additionally, the reliability of the commonly used APRS tracking system was studied.
