    Brazil: Modernity and Mobility

    Get PDF
This essay examines the field of Brazilian mobility studies, concentrating mainly on recent (2010-2013) scholarship by Portuguese-speaking Brazilian academics published in English-language journals. The mass demonstrations and violent protests that have erupted in Brazilian urban centres over the past one hundred years demonstrate the importance of mobility to Brazil’s traveling public. Several strikes by transport workers have occurred since 1903 and, over the past fifty years, there have been numerous passenger revolts too: in São Paulo in 1947, in Rio de Janeiro in 1974-5, and most recently in 2013, when protests over a proposed twenty centavos (eight US cents) increase in the price of a bus ticket broke out in more than a dozen cities. While Brazilians care deeply about their public transport, they also like their cars. The nation has had a love affair with the car since the 1920s that shows no sign of diminishing

Introduction: Much importance is given to the prevention of psychiatric disorders with greater social impact. Our interest has been focused for years on the school population in order to inform teachers and parents, and students themselves, of the existence of problems in particular depressive and psychotic illness and to provide them with tools to listen and to accieve effective referal to specialists. In addition it was asked whether it was possible, to do this with simple tools and quick detection of subclinical symptoms of disease predictors. Subjects and method: Courses have been carried out to train the teachers and parents of about 1000 pupils of age between 15 e 18 years. The pupils have attended a series of formative meetings and were administered a brief questionnaire. Results: Experience has shown that it is important to educate the adults who work with this age group. Furthermore the evidence of diagnostic entities and at risk subjects encourages us in this form of researc

The learning styles of Endodontics students from an undergraduate Dentistry course were evaluated using the Felder-Soloman Learning Styles Index. 144 students participated, from the morning and night shifts, between May and June 2016. Of these, 80.6% were female and 68.5% of the morning shift. The average age was 22.94 years and the median grade in the discipline was 6.52. The predominant styles were sensory, visual, active and sequential, respectively. The correlation between age and shift, and the intensity of each learning style had no statistically significant difference (p ˃ 0.05). Women were more sensory and men more visual (p = 0.010). In the correlation between the annual average and the styles, there was a significant difference for the sensory and the intuitive (p <0.001). Most had a mixed preference between learning styles, regardless of the shift. ECOSUSTAINIBILITY AND MENTAL HEALTH: FEMALE ASPECTS

The relationship with the environment is one of determinants of the health status of the human population. Many aspects of today\u27s society negatively affect the environment and, consequently, human health. In particular there seems to be a prevalence of diseases, linked to environmental pollution, which affects the female gender, almost to assume a role of gender pathogenicity. But the female gender is also the promoter of changes; in fact, women are more sensitive to environmental health and adopt more appropriate behavior to prevent environmental damage. It is precisely in the balance between these two aspects that we can see a factor promoting behaviors to combat the effects of environmental pollution on the mental health of Man

Autosomal recessive hyposegmentation of granulocytes in Australian Shepherd Dogs indicates a role for LMBR1L in myeloid leukocytes

Pelger-Huët anomaly (PHA) in humans is an autosomal dominant hematological phenotype without major clinical consequences. PHA involves a characteristic hyposegmentation of granulocytes (HG). Human PHA is caused by heterozygous loss of function variants in the LBR gene encoding lamin receptor B. Bi-allelic variants and complete deficiency of LBR cause the much more severe Greenberg skeletal dysplasia which is lethal in utero and characterized by massive skeletal malformation and gross fetal hydrops. HG phenotypes have also been described in domestic animals and homology to human PHA has been claimed in the literature. We studied a litter of Australian Shepherd Dogs with four stillborn puppies in which both parents had an HG phenotype. Linkage analysis excluded LBR as responsible gene for the stillborn puppies. We then investigated the HG phenotype in Australian Shepherd Dogs independently of the prenatal lethality. Genome-wide association mapped the HG locus to chromosome 27 and established an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. Whole genome sequencing identified a splice site variant in LMBR1L, c.191+1G>A, as most likely causal variant for the HG phenotype. The mutant allele abrogates the expression of the longer X2 isoform but does not affect transcripts encoding the shorter X1 isoform of the LMBR1L protein. The homozygous mutant LMBR1L genotype associated with HG is common in Australian Shepherd Dogs and was found in 39 of 300 genotyped dogs (13%). Our results point to a previously unsuspected function of LMBR1L in the myeloid lineage of leukocytes
