A group of 245 married women from Mogi das Cruzes (State of S. Paulo, Brazil were questioned about the use of contraceptive practices, past obstetric history, child mortality, and attitude toward birth control. Answers were classified according to age and family earnings. Only 49% of these women practiced contraception, 42% of which used the "pill". There was a positive correlation between the practice of birth control and wage levels, and contraception was like-wise more common in the younger age groups. The natality was reduced considerably in those women who availed themselves of contraception and also it was observed a drastic decrease in the number of abortions and in child mortality. This effect was more pronounced in those who used the anovulatory drugs.

Red Propolis Antifungal Action on Species of Candida of the Oral Cavity

Introduction: propolis is a substance that has aroused the interest of many researchers because of its numerous therapeutic properties, antibacterial and antifungal. Objectives: identifying the species of Candida and evaluate the antifungal effect of red propolis yeast oral cavity.Method: this is a clinical in vitro study with saliva samples collected from 152 patients treated at the dental office of the Family Health Strategy in the city of São Bento-PB. The identification of Candida species was made through the Chrom Ãgar Candida. The antifungal activity of the propolis extract was analyzed in four different concentrations: 100%, 75%, 50% and 25%, through the agar diffusion test. Results: The most prevalent species was C. albicans; antifungal action as to the concentration of 25% of the propolis extract was that apparently demonstrated greater efficacy, compared to the highest concentration. Conclusion: The inhibitory effect of propolis against Candida may have been influenced by the concentration of alcohol present in the extract. To test this hypothesis suggests that search is performed with extracts of propolis and at the same time with the alcohol, in both concentrations and different environmental conditions. This study offers subsidies for other professionals employ different methodologies and propolis concentrations with other substances in order to test the antimicrobial action of these

Citalopram reduces aggregation of ATXN3 in a YAC transgenic mouse model of Machado-Joseph disease

Machado-Joseph disease, also known as spinocerebellar ataxia type 3, is a fatal polyglutamine disease with no disease-modifying treatment. The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor citalopram was shown in nematode and mouse models to be a compelling repurposing candidate for Machado-Joseph disease therapeutics. We sought to confirm the efficacy of citalopram to decrease ATXN3 aggregation in an unrelated mouse model of Machado-Joseph disease. Four-week-old YACMJD84.2 mice and non-transgenic littermates were given citalopram 8 mg/kg in drinking water or water for 10 weeks. At the end of treatment, brains were collected for biochemical and pathological analyses. Brains of citalopram-treated YACMJD84.2 mice showed an approximate 50% decrease in the percentage of cells containing ATXN3-positive inclusions in the substantia nigra and three examined brainstem nuclei compared to controls. No differences in ATXN3 inclusion load were observed in deep cerebellar nuclei of mice. Citalopram effect on ATXN3 aggregate burden was corroborated by immunoblotting analysis. While lysates from the brainstem and cervical spinal cord of citalopram-treated mice showed a decrease in all soluble forms of ATXN3 and a trend toward reduction of insoluble ATXN3, no differences in ATXN3 levels were found between cerebella of citalopram-treated and vehicle-treated mice. Citalopram treatment altered levels of select components of the cellular protein homeostatic machinery that may be expected to enhance the capacity to refold and/or degrade mutant ATXN3. The results here obtained in a second independent mouse model of Machado-Joseph disease further support citalopram as a potential drug to be repurposed for this fatal disorder. This work was funded by Becky Babcox Research Fund/pilot research award G015617, University of Michigan to M.C.C. and NINDS/NIH R01NS038712 to H.L.P.
