    The author present the main historical data related to the creation and organization of the Pediatric Neurology in the Neuropsychiatric and Medical Psychology of the Medical School of Ribeirão Preto, USP, in the period of 1960 - 1990. It has been evaluated the interactions between the several departments and teachers sharing the assistencial work, research and teaching, with emphasis regard to the implantion and development of the Medical Residence in Pediatric Neurology.São apresentados os principais dados históricos relacionados à criação e organização da Neurologia Infantil no Departamento de Neuropsiquiatria e Psicologia Médica da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto, USP, no período de 1960 - 1990.     [language Evaluation In Children With Bilateral Cerebrovascular Disease: Study Of Two Cases].

    We describe two children, aging 5 years and 6 months and 5 years and 10 months respectively, when the phonoaudiological assessment was conducted. Both children presented bilateral cerebrovascular disease (CVD), confirmed in the acute phase by means of clinical and image neurological test. During this phase, the two patients were examined by a pediatric neurologist of the Pediatric Neurology Discipline of FCM/UNICAMP, pediatric CVD ambulatory. Audiologic Assessment, Protocol for Infant Language Assessment, and Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test were used in the evaluations. The qualitative analysis of the two subjects from a phonoaudiological and neurological point of view has shown the recovery of adquired language disturbance with no influence whatsoever in the development of the first subject and subtle language and/or learning process alterations for the second subject. The cases study has revealed that the predominant aspects should be analyzed in an individual, quantitative, and qualitative basis to lead to conclusive findings.62911-

    Does Stroke Impair Learning in Children?

    Objective. To assess cognitive development and learning in children who have had strokes. Method. Twenty-nine stroke patients and 18 children with no brain lesions and no learning impairments were evaluated. For the cognitive assessment, Piaget's clinical method was used. Writing, arithmetic, and reading abilities were assessed by the school performance test. Results. The mean age at evaluation was 9.6 years. Among the 29 children, 20 had early lesions (mean of 2.4 years old). The stroke was ischemic in 18 subjects; there were 7 cases of recurrence. Six children could not answer the tests. A high index of cognitive delay and low performance in writing, arithmetic, and reading were verified. Comparison with the control group revealed that the children who have had strokes had significantly lower performances. Conclusion. In this sample, strokes impaired cognitive development and learning. It is important that children have access to educational support and cognitive rehabilitation after injury. These approaches may minimise the effects of strokes on learning in children

    cerebrovascular disease (CVD) during childhood is a rare condition; its short, medium and long-term characteristics deserve further investigation. The application of behavioral techniques may improve clinical characterization, thus rendering more efficient therapeutic planning and control. to describe the audiological manifestations in a child with CVD in two distinct moments of clinical follow-up. the child, with a confirmed diagnosis of a single and unilateral episode of CVD, presenting satisfactory cognition and language skills, was submitted to a battery of conventional and auditory processing tests, which included a simplified evaluation as well as monotic, dichotic, and temporal processing tests. The obtained data was paired with those of a normal right-handed child, of the same gender, age and socio-cultural level. results indicate impairments in auditory memory as well as in selective attention during binaural separation and integration tasks for verbal and non-verbal stimuli. clinical development, although favorable, was below the average expected for the same age when compared to the control. The prospective evaluation of a child with DCV permitted the characterization of the auditory behavior, the definition of its parameters as well as the development of the audiological characteristics.19393-40

    Neurodevelopment of full-term small-for-gestacional age infants in the second month of life

    The objective of the present study was to assess and to compare the neurodevelopment of full-term adequate (AGA) or small-for-gestational age (SGA) infants in the second month of life. Sixty-seven infants were evaluated: 43 AGA and 24 SGA, making use of the Bayley Scales of Infant Development. The SGA group Index Score (IS) was significantly lower in Mental and Motor Scales. Considering the body proportionality (Asymmetric, Symmetric-SGA and Control group) there was difference in Motor Scale (p=0.003) with lower scores in the Symmetric-SGA group. Comparing to the Control group IS percentiles, in Mental Scale there was difference between Asymmetric X Symmetric-SGA; in Motor Scale, there was difference between the Asymmetric X Control (p=0.039) and Symmetric-SGA X Control (p=0.007) groups; there was no difference between Asymmetric and Symmetric-SGA although both exhibited lower scores than the Control group.O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar e comparar o neurodesenvolvimento de lactentes nascidos a termo, com peso adequado (AIG) ou pequeno para a idade gestacional (PIG), no 2º mês de vida. Avaliaram-se 67 lactentes: 43 AIG e 24 PIG, utilizando as Bayley Scales of Infant Development. O Index Score (IS) nas Escalas Mental e Motora foi significativamente menor no grupo PIG. Considerando a proporcionalidade corporal (Grupos Controle, Assimétrico e PIG-Simétrico), houve diferença significativa na Escala Motora (p=0,003), com menores pontuações no grupo PIG-Simétrico. Comparados aos percentis de IS do grupo Controle, na Escala Mental, houve diferença entre os grupos Assimétrico X PIG-Simétrico; na Escala Motora, houve diferença entre os grupos Assimétrico X Controle (p=0,039) e PIG-Simétrico X Controle (p=0,0007); não houve diferença entre os grupos Assimétrico e PIG-Simétrico, ambos apresentando menores pontuações que o grupo Controle.758

METHODS: Dichotic tests of binaural separation (non-verbal and consonant-vowel) and binaural integration - digits and Staggered Spondaic Words Test (SSW) - were applied in 13 children (7 boys), from 7 to 16 years, with unilateral stroke confirmed by neurological examination and neuroimaging. RESULTS: The attention performance showed significant differences in comparison to the control group in both kinds of tests. In the non-verbal test, identifications the ear opposite the lesion in the free recall stage was diminished and, in the following stages, a difficulty in directing attention was detected. In the consonant- vowel test, a modification in perceptual asymmetry and difficulty in focusing in the attended stages was found. In the digits and SSW tests, ipsilateral, contralateral and bilateral deficits were detected, depending on the characteristics of the lesions and demand of the task. CONCLUSION: Stroke caused auditory attention deficits when dealing with simultaneous sources of auditory information

MÉTODOS: Foram aplicados testes dicóticos de separação (não verbal e consoante-vogal) e integração - dígitos e Staggered Spondaic Words Test (SSW) - binaural em 13 crianças (7 meninos), entre 7 e 16 anos, com AVC unilateral confirmado por neuroimagem. RESULTADOS: O desempenho atencional diferiu entre os grupos na realização de ambos os tipos de tarefa. Ao teste não verbal, houve menor quantidade de identificações com a orelha contralateral à lesão em atenção livre e dificuldade de focalizar a atenção nas etapas direcionadas. No teste consoante-vogal, houve modificação da assimetria perceptual e dificuldade de focalizar a atenção nas etapas direcionadas. Nos testes de dígitos e SSW, foram constatados défices ipsilaterais, contralaterais e bilaterais dependendo das características da lesão e da demanda da tarefa. CONCLUSÃO: As crianças com AVC apresentaram défices na habilidade de atenção seletiva em presença de fontes simultâneas de informação auditiva verbal e não verbal.111
