Thermometry Precision in Strongly Correlated Ultracold Lattice Gases

The precise knowledge of the temperature of an ultracold lattice gas simulating a strongly correlated system is a question of both, fundamental and technological importance. Here, we address such question by combining tools from quantum metrology together with the study of the quantum correlations embedded in the system at finite temperatures. Within this frame we examine the spin-$1/2$ XY chain, first estimating, by means of the quantum Fisher information, the lowest attainable bound on the temperature precision. We then address the estimation of the temperature of the sample from the analysis of correlations using a quantum non demolishing Faraday spectroscopy method. Finally, we demonstrate that for sufficiently low temperatures the proposed measurements are optimal to estimate accurately the temperature of the sample.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure

Stroke in women: burden, challenges and future for pakistan

The burden of stroke is increasing around the world in both men and women. South Asia is home to 20% of the world’s population but harbors almost 80% of world strokes. Previously sex specific data on stroke incidence, prevalence, severity and mortality was not available. Now over recent years this aspect has received attention. A systematic review in 2009 concluded that although stroke in women is less common compared to men, it has a greater severity and case fatality. Although this kind of data is not available from Pakistan, some preliminary reports suggest that this might be the case in this country also. Large-Scale Goodness Polarity Lexicons for Community Question Answering

We transfer a key idea from the field of sentiment analysis to a new domain: community question answering (cQA). The cQA task we are interested in is the following: given a question and a thread of comments, we want to re-rank the comments so that the ones that are good answers to the question would be ranked higher than the bad ones. We notice that good vs. bad comments use specific vocabulary and that one can often predict the goodness/badness of a comment even ignoring the question, based on the comment contents only. This leads us to the idea to build a good/bad polarity lexicon as an analogy to the positive/negative sentiment polarity lexicons, commonly used in sentiment analysis. In particular, we use pointwise mutual information in order to build large-scale goodness polarity lexicons in a semi-supervised manner starting with a small number of initial seeds. Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is a relatively rare condition that results from thrombosis of the superficial or deep venous sinuses of the brain. The first ever reported case of the condition was back in 1825 and this was diagnosed at autopsy. It took more than 150 years before imaging modalities were developed that could diagnose cases earlier. With the advent of CT and MR venogram, the diagnosis has become much easier and is contributing to a larger number of cases being picked up. Despite that the incidence in Western literature stays low at 1.3-1.6 cases per 100,000 people. Middle Eastern and Asian countries seem to have a larger burden of CVT, possibly because of higher rates seen with infections and pregnancies
