A new approach to the optimization of the extraction of astrometric and photometric information from multi-wavelength images in cosmological fields
This paper describes a new approach to the optimization of information
extraction in multi-wavelength image cubes of cosmological fields. The
objective is to create a framework for the automatic identification and tagging
of sources according to various criteria (isolated source, partially
overlapped, fully overlapped, cross-matched, etc) and to set the basis for the
automatic production of the SEDs (spectral energy distributions) for all
objects detected in the many multi-wavelength images in cosmological fields. In
order to do so, a processing pipeline is designed that combines Voronoi
tessellation, Bayesian cross-matching, and active contours to create a
graph-based representation of the cross-match probabilities. This pipeline
produces a set of SEDs with quality tags suitable for the application of
already-proven data mining methods. The pipeline briefly described here is also
applicable to other astrophysical scenarios such as star forming regions.Comment: GREAT Workshop. This paper will be published in Springer as part of

SERVICES FOR AMERICAN INDIAN/ALASKA NATIVES FOSTER YOUTH VICTIMS OF SEXUAL EXPLOITATION: THE SOCIAL WORKER’S PERSPECTIVE
This study focused on child welfare workers and practitioners’ perceptions of Native American foster youth sex trafficked victim clients\u27 most pressing needs. The research also sought to understand the perspectives of social workers and practitioners on services for the victimized youth. The study was conducted in a large urban county in Southern California, with social workers and practitioners that work with American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) foster youth in child protective services, clinical settings, and a tribal entity. The study adopted a post-positivism paradigm. The data was collected through interviews of individual social workers and practitioners servicing AI/AN youth in the foster system with prior experience and knowledge of Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) victimized foster youth. The results reflect the intertwining of culture and trauma among Native American CSEC foster youth victims. The study highlights the importance of ongoing psychoeducation and training among all service providers, Native communities, organizations, and the court system. Experiences and complete understanding of their unique cultures, history, and the social issue of CSEC victimization among Native youth impact their most pressing needs. The needs identified were sensitivity to culture, which entails paying attention to their past experiences, historical traumas, and the importance of regaining their traditions, and human rights. Mentorship that includes a peer mentor, family, or someone with similar experiences whom the victimized youth can identify. Engagement through building rapport by conversing with the victimized youth at their level and meeting them where they are. Mental health and substance use services, to support co-occurring disorders in victimized youth which is prevalent among this population. Lastly, youth-focused and readiness, which is respecting the youth’s willingness to express and accept help. Many times, having to be patient, flexible, and using the harm reduction model. The study also identifies the delivery methods practitioners identified as most successful with their Native American CSEC foster youth victims. Those service delivery methods included different services/linkage, like agencies that are well equipped and provide case management, and traditional methods. The importance of connection in CSEC, Native American services that are more holistic and spiritual forms of healing. Then collaboration, being vital among all service providers to successfully reach the victimized youth’s identified goal. As a result of this study, practitioners, social workers, and stakeholders will better understand the needs that AI/NA foster youth sex trafficked victims may have on a micro-level. It can also help practitioners choose programs that meet their defined needs, resulting in empathy and a more substantial commitment to help them recover, promoting partnerships among organizations in delivering services beyond foster care, developing ongoing supportive services to victims of sex trafficking, and ultimately reducing revictimization
Breaking Bad, entre lo doméstico y lo salvaje. Black Mirror and The enemies of freedom
Four temptations against urban renewel: an approach to fur current urban processes
Comunicación presentada en 25 European Network housing Research International Conference. Tarragona 19 al 22 junio 2013The new paradigm of urban social and economic rehabilitation is replacing the
current sprawl growth model. But four temptations must be considered:
1) The high-density. This process is possible in sprawl model, but its quantification does not
seem to be clear, because after a certain threshold of occupancy per unit area, the city seems to
collapse and social and environmental benefits disappear, appearing reversal processes city to
country in search of a minimum quality of life standards. There is not a model for appropriate
density. It depends on the way of life of population, the traditional city model.
2) The replacement. Architectonic and urban rehabilitation must be preferred to replacement,
except for certain cases to be legally taxed. But as the city cannot be densified and orderly,
without the prior replacement of the building, may fit this temptation. Even replacing the
building can be made without considering high building standards
3) The gentrification. There is a wide doctrine and experience about this phenomenon with
serious social consequences. It is very tempting to replace the building, due to improve
requirement of broad levels of quality, entering a game of speculation, so common in our real
estate market.
4) The eco-city. Comprehensive projects are building spaces with low levels of energy
consumption. Fall into this temptation means to continue the extensive city model we have been
developing, creating new cities far from the existing but incorporating saving measures, and
continuing resource consumptio
Modulating Surface Dipoles in Fluorinated Thin Films
This dissertation investigates the effect a surface dipole has on the interfacial properties of partially fluorinated self-assembled monolayers (FSAMs). In the first study, the synthesis of a new type of partially fluorinated adsorbate of the form CH3(CF2)6(CH2)nSH where n = 10–13 was performed. On the surface, these adsorbates generate a novel hydrocarbon-fluorocarbon (HC-FC) dipole at the interface of the SAMs that has a profound effect on the wettability of the surfaces with various contacting liquids; specifically, the inverse odd-even effect observed with regard to the wettability of polar protic and aprotic liquids. Additionally, the properties of the HC-FC dipole were compared to those of a FC-HC (fluorocarbon-hydrocarbon) dipole derived from CF3-termianted alkanethiols.
In efforts to understand further the effect of the new HC-FC dipole, an additional series of alkyl-terminated alkanethiols of the form H(CH2)n(CF2)6(CH2)11SH, where n = 1–7, was synthesized and used to form SAMs. In this study, the dipole was systematically buried in the film and analyzed with several contacting liquids. The effect of the dipole in these types of FSAMs appears to have a diminished effect after 3 hydrocarbons, after which an odd-even effect in the wettability was observed. The odd-even effects observed in the FSAMs were the opposite of that observed with normal alkanethiols of the same carbon length, which suggests that the orientation of the terminal methyl group is different from the normal alkanethiol.
Finally, to explore further the effect of the direction of the FC-HC and HC-FC dipoles, evaporated gold surfaces were electrochemically modified with a monolayer of silver via underpotential deposition (UPD). The monolayer of silver has an effect on the structural features of the films caused by the different binding geometries of the sulfur on gold and silver. The structural difference between the two substrates inverts the odd-even effects for SAMs with a FC-HC dipole. For SAMs possessing a HC-FC dipole, the presence of silver on the gold surface also changes the orientation of the molecules on the different metals, influencing the physical and interfacial properties of the resulting films.Chemistry, Department o
