Does importing more inputs raise exports? Firm level evidence from France

Following Melitz (2003)'s seminal paper, several theoretical and empirical studies have shown that only the subset of most productive firms export. While other studies provide evidence on a positive effect of an increase in imported inputs on firms' productivity, the link between imported intermediate inputs and export scope has not been made. This paper bridges the gap by studying the impact of imported inputs on the margins of exports. We use a unique firms' level database of imports at the product (HS6) level provided by French Customs for the 1995-2005 period. Access to new varieties of inputs may increase productivity, and thereby exports, through better complementarity of inputs, transfer of technology and/or decreased inputs price index. We test for these different mechanisms by distinguishing the origin of imports (developing vs. developed countries) and constructing an exact price index a la Broda and Weinstein (2006). We find a significant impact of higher diversification and increased number of imported inputs varieties on firm's TFP and export scope. Whereas the complementarity and transfer of technology mechanisms are supported by our results, the price effect seems very limited.Firm heterogeneity, imported inputs, TFP, export scope, varieties, price index, firm-level data

Introduction to a Special Issue on the Impact of Immigrant Legalization Initiatives: International Perspectives on Immigration and the World of Work

This article is the third in a series to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the ILR Review. The series features articles that analyze the state of research and future directions for important themes the journal has featured over its many years of publication. In this issue, we also feature a special cluster of articles and book reviews on one of the most critical labor market issues across the globe—the legalization and integration of immigrants into national labor markets. Despite the urgent need for immigration reform in the United States, there is a paucity of US research that looks at the impact of a shift from unauthorized to legal immigrant status in the workplace. The US immigration literature has also paid little attention to immigrant legalization policies outside of the United States, despite the fact that other countries have implemented such policies with far more regularity. The articles in this special issue draw on studies of legalization initiatives in major immigrant destinations: Canada, Italy, and the United Kingdom. Together they underscore the importance of cross-national perspectives for understanding the range of legalization programs and their impact on immigrant workers, the workplace, and the labor market. These findings contribute to key questions in migration scholarship and inform the global policy debate surrounding the integration and well-being of immigrant

Turn Teams, How Do You Prevent Unit Acquired Pressure Ulcers?

There was a marked increase in unit acquired pressure ulcers in 2014 and beginning of 2015. An action plan was formulated between 3 Tower Patient Outcomes Facilitators and Unit Shared Governance Council to develop scheduled turning teams to reduce unit acquired pressure ulcers. For hospitalized patients at risk for pressure ulcers, will a dedicated turning team decrease the number of unit acquired pressure ulcers? A standardized method of turning patients at risk for pressure ulcers every two hours was developed. Registered Nurses and Clinical Partners identify total care patients who are at risk for developing pressure ulcers. A Green Reposition Magnet is placed on the doorframe to identify those patients that need to be repositioned every two hours. Staff members are assigned, at the beginning of the shift, their scheduled times to turn patients. Administrative Partners send out reminders to reposition patients every two hours via ascom text message. Both team members reposition the identified total care patients and off load heels every two hours. Both team members circle the position the patient was turned on the rounding log and place both initials on the scheduled turn time. Staff education on process completed via staff meetings, emails, and huddles. The implementation of the Turn Teams in 3 Tower markedly decreased the incidence of unit acquired pressure ulcers, going from an average of 2-6 unit acquired pressure ulcers per quarter to 1 unit acquired pressure ulcer per quarter. We can conclude that this has had a positive effect in length of stay and financial implications associated with pressure ulcers. This is a simple budget neutral practice that can result in a decrease of unit acquired pressure ulcers for hospitalized patients at risk for pressure ulcer development. The Turn Teams have now been integrated as part of the standard nursing interventions for pressure ulcer prevention on 3 Tower. The implementation of the Turn Teams on 3 Tower did not incur any incremental costs. 3 Tower has been the leader in implementing this pressure ulcer prevention initiative in Baptist Hospital. Multiple units within the hospital have implemented the turning teams and have had positive results

Multiple nearest-neighbor exchange model for the frustrated magnetic molecules Mo72Fe30 and Mo72Cr30

Our measurements of the differential susceptibility dM/dH of the frustrated magnetic molecules Mo72Fe30 and Mo72Cr30 reveal a pronounced dependence on magnetic field (H) and temperature (T) in the low H - low T regime, contrary to the predictions of existing models. Excellent agreement with experiment is achieved upon formulating a nearest-neighbor classical Heisenberg model where the 60 nearest-neighbor exchange interactions in each molecule, rather than being identical as has been assumed heretofore, are described by a two-parameter probability distribution of values of the exchange constant. We suggest that the probability distribution provides a convenient phenomenological platform for summarizing the combined effects of multiple microscopic mechanisms that disrupt the idealized picture of a Heisenberg model based on a single value of the nearest-neighbor exchange constant.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

Contemporaneously, Archives, Libraries and Museums are not merely physical environments to also adopt a digital conformation, becoming hybrids. The Museum of the Person, whose museum fact are actually stories of life, has its own characteristics, due to the structural design of its platform to allow both institutional action top-down as collaborative, bottom-up. The aim of this article is to study the technological transformation of the Museum of the Person from its genesis in 1991. The specific objective is to understand how such transformations, from the advent of the Internet, are part of the post-custodial paradigm or paradigm access; and the role of Information Design in the Digital Curation platform that supports the museum. The methodology outlines itself as indirect participatory through historical study, observation planned on websites, dissertations, theses, scientific articles, papers and books, and descriptive. The work is justified by the need to meet new formats for Digital Curation in museological institutions within the Information Science. As a result, we expect understanding possible model for the preservation and interaction with life stories and memories, seen here as a World Heritage Memorial.
