    The impact of alternative science education methodologies on the motivation and acquisition of scientific concepts

    Fully aware of the increasing importance of active and experimental learning, this study has been conducted in Portugal between 2007 and 2008 and was the first of this kind to ever be conducted in this country. Thirty eight students of the school E.B. 2, 3 D. Maria II (middle school) participated in the extra-curricular activity entitled “Scientists for a Day”, previous developed by the Life and Health Science Research Institute/School of Health Science (ICVS/ECS), University of Minho. This activity realized in the School E.B. 2, 3 D. Maria II and organized by teachers of the same School consisted in a set of laboratory activities subdivided into four experimental stations, namely: 1st Station – “Extracting banana DNA”; 2nd Station – “Acid/Base”, 3rd Station – “Observation of chicken embryos” and 4th Station – “Five Senses”. The general objectives of this activity were to stimulate the pleasure of knowledge, encourage critical views, heighten the interest in science, motivate students towards experimental work and demystify the idea of what a Scientist is. In an effort to validate this activity and evaluate what they have learned, the students were asked to answer a questionnaire before and immediately after this activity. In this study we observed a clear correlation between the use of active and experimental learning activities, and an increase in scientific knowledge

    Introduction The EASYCare is a multidimensional assessment tool for older people, which corresponds to the concerns and priorities of older people in relation to their needs, health, and quality of life. The EASYCare instrument has been used in many countries worldwide. Lack of reliability evidence has recently been raised by researchers. This study aimed to test the validity and reliability of the EASYCare-2010 instrument in community-dwelling Portuguese older people attended in Primary Health Care centres. Methods The sample for this transversal study (N = 244) was collected from Portuguese Primary Health Care Centers. Categorical Principal Component Analysis was used to assess the underlying dimensions of EASYCare-2010. Construct validity was evaluated through correlation with the World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment Instrument-Short Form. Results A two-factor model (labelled “mobility and activities of daily life”, and “general well-being and safety”) was found. The EASYCare-2010 instrument showed acceptable levels for internal consistency (≥0.70). The EASYCare-2010 factors were correlated with measures of quality of life. Results showed that in most polytomous items, some of the more extreme categories were not considered at all or only by a residual number of participants. Conclusion EASY Care -2010 version is a valid and reliable instrument for holistic assessment of the older people attended in Primary Health Care centres in Portugal

    The Pyrenean Axial Zone is characterized by thick series of metasedimentary and orthogneissic materials derived from pre-Variscan rocks. These sequences were intruded by large bodies of Variscan granitoids, some exposed after the Alpine orogeny. In the Eastern Pyrenees, a number of quartz veins of kilometric length and metric to decametric width, are present. Although these veins are mostly hosted by Variscan and pre-Variscan rocks, in the utheastern limit of the Roc de Frausa Massif, large fault related quartz bodies rossc utting Mesozoic sedimentary rocks, have also been recognized Liesa, 1988). The Roses giant quartz vein constitutes a remarkable example of the seregional scale quartz veins. It is located at the south ernportion of the Cap de Creus Massif, extending for 2700 mand reaching widths up to 25m. Apparently, the vein continues towards the NW depicting a much longer structure

    Carbonaceous solid products resulting from thermochemical processes (pyrolysis, gasification), commonly known as chars, are emerging as low-cost sorbents of metallic contaminants, being their effectiveness already demonstrated in several studies (Inyang et al., 2012; Fuente-Cuesta et al., 2012; Ko³odyñska et al., 2012; Quek and Balasubramanian, 2009; Devecia and Kar, 2013). Given the fact that the commercial viability of pyrolysis and gasification plants for the treatment and valorisation of waste streams are increasingly being demonstrated, it is expected that large amounts of solid chars will be available in a near future, as by-products or as main products (pyrolysis-carbonization). Chars may possess several characteristics which turn them effective as heavy metals sorbents: aromatic carbon matrix with relatively porous structures, the presence of functional groups or inorganic inclusions in the surface providing active sites to interact with metallic species (Inyang et al., 2012; Fuente-Cuesta et al., 2012; Ko³odyñska et al., 2012; Quek and Balasubramanian, 2009; Devecia and Kar, 2013; Lu et al., 2012). Lead (Pb2+) is considered as a priority substance in the field of European water policy (EU, 2000; EU, 2008) which means that measures shall be taken by the Member States to eliminate or reduce the water pollution caused by this pollutant in order to fulfill the emission/discharge limits legislated for this compound

    Activated carbons from the co-pyrolysis of rice wastes for Cr(III) removal

    ABSTRACT: Rice husk and polyethylene were mixed (50 % w/w each) and submitted to a pyrolysis assay. Four physical activations with CO2 were performed on the resulting co-pyrolysis char (PC). The activation at 800 °C, for 4h, generated the activated carbon (PAC3) with the best textural properties. PC, PAC3 and a commercial activated carbon (CAC) were characterized and submitted to Cr(III) removal assays. PC had a high percentage of volatile matter that was removed after the physical activation, resulting in more available pores in the final material (PAC). In the Cr(III) removal assays, two S/L ratios were tested: 5 and 10 g L-1. PC did not remove any Cr(III) from the solutions, but PAC presented similar results to CAC. At the S/L of 5 g L-1, Cr(III) removal was of 58.5 % for PAC and 62.5 % for CAC, both by adsorption mechanism; at the S/L of 10 g L-1, Cr(III) removal was almost complete due to precipitation caused by pH increase. The highest uptake capacities were of 7.92 mg g-1 for PAC and 8.71 mg g-1 for CAC, at the S/L of 5 g L-1.     Effect of drill speed on the strain distribution during drilling of bovine and human bones

    Drilling is an operation commonly required in orthopaedic surgery for insertion of screws and internal fixation of bone fractures. Induced damage is one of the undesired effects of drilling mainly due to the use of inadequate drilling parameters. During the recent years, scientists have been trying to describe the relationship between drilling parameters and bone injury. However, no studies have examined the level of strain generated in the bone during the drilling process. This paper focuses on the analysis of different drill speeds during drilling of fresh bovine femora and human cadaveric tibiae. The main contribution of this work is to determine how differences in applied drill speeds affect the strain of cortical tissue near the drilling site and the drill bit temperature. Strains were measured in ex-vivo material during the osteotomy preparation with three drill speeds (520, 900 and 1370 r.p.m.). Additionally, a thermographic camera was used to measure the drill bit temperature. As the drilling operations are blind in nature with unknown depth, the osteotomies were performed using a drill press machine without control of the feed rate or depth. Drill bit geometry was kept constant with 4 mm of diameter, point angle 120⁰ and helix angle 30⁰. The tests were conducted at room temperature without applying cooling at the drilling zone. Bone strains near to the drilling sites were recorded with high accuracy using linear strain gages mounted around the diaphyseal cortex. It was noted that the bone strain and drill bit temperature increased with an increasing drill speed. Human and bovine bone samples presented significantly different levels of strain and temperature.     Cr(III) removal from synthetic and industrial wastewaters by using co-gasification chars of rice waste streams

    ABSTRACT: Blends of rice waste streams were submitted to co-gasification assays. The resulting chars (G1C and G2C) were characterized and used in Cr(III) removal assays from a synthetic solution. A Commercial Activated Carbon (CAC) was used for comparison purposes. The chars were non-porous materials mainly composed by ashes (68.3-92.6% w/w). The influences of adsorbent loading (solid/liquid ratio - S/L) and initial pH in Cr(III) removal were tested. G2C at a S/L of 5 mg L-1 and an initial pH of 4.50 presented an uptake capacity significantly higher than CAC (7.29 and 2.59 mg g(-1), respectively). G2C was used in Cr(III) removal assays from an industrial wastewater with Cr(III) concentrations of 50, 100 and 200 mg L-1. Cr(III) removal by precipitation (uptake capacity ranging from 11.1 to 14.9mg g(-1)) was more effective in G2C, while adsorption (uptake capacity of 16.1 mg g(-1)) was the main removal mechanism in CAC.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Effect of particle size upon the extent of extraction of antioxidant power from the plants Agrimonia eupatoria, Salvia sp. and Satureja montana

    The dependence of the extent of aqueous extraction of antioxidant compounds on particle size and contact time was studied for three important medicinal plants, that are commonly used in infusions: agrimony, sage and savoury. The effect of extraction time was dependent on the plant considered; however, ca. 5 min can be taken as the minimum period required to assure an acceptable degree of extraction of those compounds. As expected, a smaller particle size led to a higher extraction extents; a typical value of 0.2 mmis accordingly recommended. Chlorogenic acid was the dominant phenolic compound extracted from agrimony, whereas caffeic acid dominated in the case of sage or savoury. A mathematical model based on Fick’s law was developed from first principles, and its two parameters were suitably fitted to the experimental data generated – in attempts to predict the evolution of antioxidant capacity extracted during contact time, for each plant and each particle size
