This study investigated the gustatory threshold for salt and its relationship with dietary salt intake among hypertensive (n = 54) and normotensive (n = 54) subjects. Salt intake was evaluated through 24-hour urinary sodium excretion and self-reported measures (discretionary salt, Sodium- Food Frequence Questionnaire (Na-FFQ), and 24-hour recall). Detection and recognition thresholds were higher among hypertensive subjects, as well as the total sodium intake. Detection and recognition thresholds were positively related to discretionary salt and total intake of the group as whole. Hypertensive and normotensive subjects presented positive correlations between taste sensitivity and the different measures of salt intake. To conclude, a positive correlation exists between taste threshold and salt intake and both seem to be higher among hypertensive subjects. The combined use of methods of self-report and assessment of taste thresholds can be useful in health promotion and rehabilitation programs, by screening subjects at higher risk of elevated salt intake and the critical dietary behaviors to be targeted as well to evaluate the result of targeted interventions.201330121

This study estimated the known groups construct validity for the Instrument to Measure the Impact of Coronary Disease on Patient's Everyday Life (IDCV) related to signs and symptoms, ventricular systolic function, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in 153 outpatients with coronary artery disease. Data was obtained through application of IDCV and Brazilian versions of the instruments The Medical Study 36-item Short Form Health Survey - SF-36 and the MacNew Heart Disease Health-related Quality of Life Questionnaire . Mann-Whitney test was used to verify the ability of IDCV in discriminating impact of signs and symptoms, LVEF and ventricular systolic dysfunction. Also, the Kruskal-Wallis test was used to verify the discrimination power of the IDCV in relation to HRQoL. It was observed that the IDCV discriminated the impact between variables scored in HRQOL quartiles (≤Q1, Q1-Q3, ≥Q3). The study findings contribute for improvement of IDCV in measurement of disease impact in coronary artery disease patients.47843-5

Standard practices in cardiac monitoring: training needs of intensive care unit nurses

    No full text
Abstract Background Enforcing practice standards for cardiac monitoring in intensive care units (ICUs) has been shown to reduce misdiagnoses and inappropriate interventions. Continuous professional development (CPD) programs are committed to aligning clinical practices with recommended standards. The crucial initial phase in CPD development involves assessing the training needs of the targeted population. Objective To assess the training needs of ICU nurses in cardiac monitoring. The overarching goal was to formulate a focused Continuous Professional Development (CPD) program geared towards implementing standard practices in cardiac monitoring. Methods This study employed a generic qualitative approach with a descriptive design, utilizing interviews and focus groups from July to September 2018. Involving 16 ICU nurses. Content analysis was employed, encompassing transcription, fluctuant and iterative reading, unitization, categorization, coding, description, and interpretation. Results All nurses recognized cardiac monitoring’s importance in the ICU but reported barriers to its effective implementation which were related to factors that could addressed by a CPD as insufficient knowledge and skills. Training needs were identified in both clinical and technical aspects, with recommendations for practical and theoretical activities and e-learning strategies. Barriers related to organizational aspects (equipment and communication within the healthcare team) were also mentioned. Conclusion ICU nurses presented clear and specific training needs related to cardiac monitoring as knowledge, skills, and competencies. Other organizational aspects were also reported as barriers. Addressing these learning needs through targeted CPD aligned with organizational initiatives can contribute to enhancing the quality of cardiac monitoring practices in ICUs

The objective of the present study was to perform the cultural adaptation of The Environmental Stressor Questionnaire - ESQ for the Brazilian Portuguese, as well as to verify its reliability and validity. In order to ensure the equivalence between the original instrument and the Brazilian version, all methodological steps recommended in the literature regarding cultural adaptation were followed. The Brazilian version of the ESQ was applied to 106 ICU patients in two hospitals (public and private) in the interior of São Paulo State. Reliability was evaluated in relation to internal consistency and stability (test e retest) and the convergent validity was determined by the correlation between ESQ and generic questions about ICU stress. Reliability was satisfactory with Cronbach's Alfa = 0,94 and stability (ICC=0,861; IC95% 0,723; 0,933). ESQ total score displayed strong correlation with the generic questions about stress (r=0,70; p<0,0001), thus confirming the convergent validity. The conclusion was that the ESQ adapted for Brazilian culture is a reliable instrument for evaluation of stressors in the ICU

The aim of this study was to evaluate scientific articles published between 1991-1995, in order to identify the compliance in antihypertensive therapy.
