New Approaches to Financing Charities and Other Social Enterprises: A Snapshot: May 2003

    Get PDF
This paper seeks to record and explain the enormous growth in interest in the provision of loans and investment to charities and other social enterprises. It aims at capturing the UK's position in May 2003, analysing the gaps in the provision of financing, the different types of financing available at the time, and the development of new methods. Includes a bibliography

Approaches to Financing Charitable Work: Tracking Developments: January 2006

    Get PDF
This publication refers to approaches of financing charitable work including the provision of loans and the taking of equity in organisations advancing charitable purposes. It focuses on the growing awareness of the needs for capital funding, UK government concern to encourage investment in disadvantaged areas, and increase advocacy from influential organisations and individuals

New Approaches to Funding Not-for-profit Organisations

    Get PDF
This report seeks to record and to explain the enormous growth in interest over the last few years in the provision of loans and other investment to non-profit organisations. It argues that this funding development fills a gap in the market. It describes the following new approaches: social investment; the provision of 'patient capital', and an 'investment' or 'venture philanthropy' approach to grant making. The factors driving the growth in use of these approaches are examined and their relevance to fundraising charities considered. Finally, the report discusses how key stakeholders including the government and charitable trusts are adapting to this new environment

The effects of two training programs on swimming speed, physiological efficiency, and strength of college women

    Get PDF
Programs of exercise are being used as supplements to training in particular sports events. These exercise programs are based upon the theory of overload which advocates developing strength by increasing the intensity of the exercise program. It is believed that an increase in strength, brought about by exercise programs, plus training in the specific sport will bring about better performance than would be possible by only training in the specific sport (1, 20)

UK guideline for the use of HIV post-exposure prophylaxis 2021

    Get PDF
We present the updated British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) guidelines for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to HIV following sexual exposures, occupational exposures and other nonoccupational exposures in the community. This serves as an update to the 2015 BASHH guideline on PEP following sexual exposures and the 2008 Expert Advisory Group on AIDS guidelines on HIV PEP. We aim to provide evidence-based guidance on best clinical practice in the provision, monitoring and support of PEP for the prevention of HIV acquisition following sexual, occupational and other nonoccupational exposures in the community. The guideline covers when to prescribe PEP, what antiretroviral agents to use and how to manage PEP. This includes (i) evidence of PEP efficacy; (ii) evidence relating to individual-level efficacy of antiretroviral therapy to prevent the sexual transmission of HIV; (iii) data on the detectable (transmissible) prevalence of HIV in specific populations; (iv) risk of HIV transmission following different types of sexual and occupational exposure; (v) baseline risk assessment; (vi) drug regimens and dosing schedules; (vii) monitoring PEP; (viii) baseline and follow-up blood-borne virus testing; (ix) the role of PEP within broader HIV prevention strategies, for example, HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). The guideline also covers special scenarios such as PEP in pregnancy, breastfeeding and chronic hepatitis B virus infection, and when PEP should be considered in people using HIV PrEP. The guidelines are aimed at clinical professionals directly involved in PEP provision and other stakeholders in the field. A proforma to assist PEP consultations is included. A public consultation process was undertaken prior to finalizing the recommendations

The Guaymas Basin hiking guide to hydrothermal mounds, chimneys, and microbial mats : complex seafloor expressions of subsurface hydrothermal circulation

The definitive version was published in Frontiers in Microbiology 7 (2016): 75, doi:10.3389/fmicb.2016.00075.The hydrothermal mats, mounds, and chimneys of the southern Guaymas Basin are the surface expression of complex subsurface hydrothermal circulation patterns. In this overview, we document the most frequently visited features of this hydrothermal area with photographs, temperature measurements, and selected geochemical data; many of these distinct habitats await characterization of their microbial communities and activities. Microprofiler deployments on microbial mats and hydrothermal sediments show their steep geochemical and thermal gradients at millimeter-scale vertical resolution. Mapping these hydrothermal features and sampling locations within the southern Guaymas Basin suggest linkages to underlying shallow sills and heat flow gradients. Recognizing the inherent spatial limitations of much current Guaymas Basin sampling calls for comprehensive surveys of the wider spreading region.AT acknowledges a W. Third workshop on appropriate sampling schemes for protected, endangered and threatened species bycatch (WKPETSAMP3)

    Get PDF
The workshops WKPETSAMP2 and WKPETSAMP3 were convened following a special request from the European Union’s Directorate-General for Environment (DG ENV) on appropriate sampling schemes for endangered, threatened and protected (ETP) species. In particular, these workshops were tasked with providing concrete inputs and results to inform ICES advice to DG ENV on ‘appropriate bycatch monitoring systems at Member State level and on regional coordination’. An aim of the PETSAMP workshops was to generate improved insights into how aspects of sampling design may impact the precision and accuracy of bycatch estimates and the detection probability of bycatch events. The workshop considered key issues such as: how sampling coverage (percentage of monitored fishing operations) impacts the precision of bycatch estimates and how this is dependent on the bycatch probability (how often a bycatch is encountered); if stratification improves precision and if this is dependent on bycatch probability; if it is better to sample few vessels but many trips (e.g. typical of reference fleets and Electronic Monitoring programmes) or many vessels but fewer trips (e.g. typical of at-sea observer programmes). To do this the WKPETSAMP2 extended the simulation framework (SCOTI) developed by WGBYC in 2022. This framework was used in WKPETSAMP3 and was parameterized with data from several case studies. The case studies are from ongoing or historical sampling programs and represent different waters across Europe and different fisheries

Factors associated with four atypical cases of congenital syphilis in England, 2016 to 2017: an ecological analysis.

    Get PDF
Four isolated cases of congenital syphilis born to mothers who screened syphilis negative in the first trimester were identified between March 2016 and January 2017 compared with three cases between 2010 and 2015. The mothers were United Kingdom-born and had no syphilis risk factors. Cases occurred in areas with recent increases in sexually-transmitted syphilis among women and men who have sex with men, some behaviourally bisexual, which may have facilitated bridging between sexual networks
