    Discrimination of sexual minorities and plans to relocate

    LGBTQ individuals make relocation decisions with their sexual orientation and gender identity in mind (Gorman-Murray, 2007). The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between non-violent discrimination faced by LGBTQ individuals and whether or not those individuals have future plans to relocate. A literature review of LGBTQ discrimination and LGBTQ relocation is discussed, and a secondary data analysis was conducted on a sample of LGBTQ individuals who participated in a quality-of-life survey. All hypotheses were supported except the hypothesis that analyzed anti-LGBTQ discrimination and its association with time until relocation. Results indicated that experiencing anti-LGBTQ nonviolent discrimination was significantly associated with reporting plans to relocate. A logistic regression also reported that experiencing anti-LGBTQ nonviolent discrimination predicted plans to relocate. Lastly, low age was significantly associated with reporting plans to relocate

    Printer Modeling for Document Imaging

    The microscopic details of printing often are unnoticed by humans, but can make differences that affect machine recognition of printed text. Models of the defects introduced into images by printing can be used to improve machine recognition. A probabilistic model used to generate images showing toner placement bears similarities to actual printed images. An equation derived for the average coverage of paper by toner particles having probabilistic placement is developed using geometric probability. Simulations show that averages of ‘printed images’ do have the same average coverage as the derived average coverage equations

    Weed Management Strategies for Organic Flax, 2005–2006

    Demand for certified organic flax has increased due to a rise in human consumption of food products rich in omega-3 oil and due to the recent construction of a certified organic oilseed expelling facility in Cherokee, IA. Challenges exist to raising organic flax in the upper Midwest due to competition from weeds and limited information about weed management strategies for organic farmers. Weeds can reduce flax yield and re-populate the soil seed bank, increasing weed pressure in the future. In 2005 and 2006, research was conducted to assess: 1) which weed management strategies can best control weeds in flax, and 2) how do weeds affect flax grain yield

    In Vitro HPV-11 Infection of Human Foreskin

    Study of the infectious process of human papillomavirus type 11 (HPV-11) has been facilitated by the discovery that HPV- 11 – infected neonatal human foreskin epithelium can proliferate as xenografts into condyloma-like growths within athymic nude mice. Here we describe detection of HPV-1 1 infection of neonatal human foreskin-derived keratinocytes, infected and cultured entirely in vitro, by use of the polymerase chain reaction and primers straddling the splice donor/ acceptor site of the most prevalent early gene HPV-11 transcript (E1∧E4). Expression of the E1∧E4 HPV-11 mRNA is abrogated by 60°C heat inactivation of the inoculum. HPV- 11 – infected foreskin explants continue to produce the E1∧E4 mRNA for up to 5 weeks in culture, and second-passage keratinocytes derived from infected explant outgrowths continue to produce the E1∧E4 mRNA. The in vitro system described here provides a new way to study HPV-11 infection and may be useful in evaluating early events of infection

    Demand for certified organic flax has increased due to a rise in human consumption of food products rich in omega-3 oil and due to the recent construction of a certified organic oilseed expelling facility in Cherokee, IA.Challenges exist to raising organic flax in the upper Midwest, including a lack of region-specific production guidelines, adequate weed management strategies, and seed availability. Contract requirements stipulate specific flax cultivars to be grown, but seed for these is not available locally. Seed shipped from Canada can be expensive,so accurate seeding rate recommendations are needed. Seeding rates may need to be increased for organic production over those suggested for conventional production to aid in weed suppression. In 2005 and 2006, ranges of seeding rates were evaluated to assess the effect on flax grain yield and oil quantity
