What Syria Can Teach Us in Creating a New and Better Future?

    Get PDF
It is clear that humanity is, once again, facing a crisis of identity and purpose. Weak global leadership, a crisis of displaced persons and the complex problem of integrating different cultures into countries other than their homelands, has led us to the threat of a complete breakdown of civilisation as we know it. In addition, we have the rise of the Islamic State (ISIS) in the Levant, how did they get to be so popular among the Muslim youth of the West? What started as a war of words to recruit Muslim youth, has now turned into a military war fought across many countries. The narrative of each warring party is increasing in tone to match the killings we witness daily by either side. This presentation aims to look at the narrative and language used by all sides of this conflict; a language that borrows words taken from the early days of Islam to convey legitimacy to the cause and the battle for ultimate leadership. There is no neat solution, but a need for collective collaboration. It is now up to the younger generation to explore and debate. It is important that the elders’ wisdom is harnessed to guide the youth with vision and new ideas. A new way of living is necessary if we are to secure the future of the human race

    Plastic Glory

In ancient times, humans used drawing on walls as a way to express their emotions and thoughts. Then, cameras were invented to pursue that purpose through photos and videos in sharper images. And now we do animation, not just because it is pretty, but also because it is the tool that allows us to freely speak our minds, without being bothered by what we can and what we cannot do in film! There is a Lebanese thinker, poet, artist and writer named Jubran Khaleel Jubran, who has always inspired me with his artworks and specifically his poems. Mysteriously, there was something about his writings that I did not like so much. His thoughts were astonishing, but what made his thoughts less amazing to me was the fabulous poetic writing he descried his thoughts with. My feeling about his style eventually taught me that when we have strong ideas, simplicity in expressing them becomes the best vessel that delivers the thoughts, which leads to success. However, failure is certain when the ideas are too simple. Filmmakers should think big, plan bigger and act simple. I might have passed the simplicity line in my thesis, but I kept that idea of simplicity in my mind and I am sure it helped me making my film go as simple as possible, rather than ending up with a film that is impossible to accomplish. Plastic can mean either the material of toys or other objects, or the meaning of the word fake . The main story of Plastic Glory is about plastic soldiers who die for a glory that is fake . It is fake because it promises that soldiers die only when necessary, for the glory of their country. But what happens is that soldiers always die, unfortunately only for the glory of those who control them and, in the most cases, care more about getting promoted than choosing to keep their troops alive. The film is about plastic toy soldiers in battle, firing at each other, bombing each other in a way that mimics real battles and wars, only without blood, smoke or fire. Such an approach makes more room for the imagination of the audience where they can fill in what they do not see with what they know and perceive. It also makes the film appropriate for kids to watch, while safely passing the idea to them that war is merely a mean killing machine. And the most unfortunate victims of the violence that is delivered through the toy soldiers are the kids

The objective of this study is to compare thesegmental narrative disclosures of Qatari listed companiesunder IFRS 8 for 2009 with narrative disclosures underIAS 14R for 2008. Specifically, the current study used adisclosure index method to capture (i) the number ofsegments reported; (ii) the geographic segment definitions(areas) included and (iii) the identity of the chief operatingdecision maker (CODM). The current study finds anincrease in the number of companies disclosing segmentalinformation while the number of business and geographicsegments for which information was provided rose underIFRS 8. The geographic definitions increased under IFRS8. It also finds that more than 60% of the samplecompanies determined the identity of the CODM in 2009.Thus, this research shows that IFRS 8 compliance amongstQatar listed companies has resulted in an increase in thenumber of segments and segmental definitions. Thefindings of the current study represent a significantcontribution to knowledge. Specifically, it is the first studyof its kind in Qatar, exploratory in nature and adds to thegrowing literature on financial disclosure in general andon segmental disclosure in developing countries inparticular

Cross Disciplinary Virtual Reality for Lighting and Composition: Research Update

    Get PDF
Advanced technology has made Virtual Reality a viable tool for widespread multidisciplinary use. We saw an opportunity to use VR to benefit multiple departments at RIT; 3D Digital Design, Industrial Design, Interior Design, and the School of Film and Animation. All departments wrestle with the problem of effectively allowing the students the speed to iteratively light, compose and compare work. The complexity and length of rendering time using previous generation (CPU rendering) 3D applications distracts learners from focusing on design. Light and Composition are two major elements of designs that are often buried under overwhelming technical obstacles

Anomaly payload signature generation system based on efficient tokenization methodology

© 2018 Praise Worthy Prize S.r.l. All rights reserved. Signature-based intrusion detection systems are widely used as an efficient network security control. Unfortunately, security experts manually craft attack signatures after capturing and analyzing the exploit code. Therefore, those systems are only able to detect known attacks. In this paper, we propose a new automated and content-based signature generation system that generates anomaly profiles to detect new and previously unknown attacks and worms. The proposed system, denoted SCANS, uses a natural tokenization method that speeds up the signature generation process by producing a fewer number of substrings. In this system, we propose a new stop character technique that will help to overcome signatures’ substrings granularity limitations of the old stop word techniques. In addition, SCANS introduces an improved normalized binary detection model specifically tailored for attacks detection. Experimental testing using DARPA IDS dataset shows a 95% malicious packets detection rate for port 23, with specificity of 88.4% and 94.6% for ports 21 and 25, respectively
