    Empirical Investigation on Agile Methods Usage: Issues Identified from Early Adopters in Malaysia

    Agile Methods are a set of software practices that can help to produce products faster and at the same time deliver what customers want. Despite the benefits that Agile methods can deliver, however, we found few studies from the Southeast Asia region, particularly Malaysia. As a result, less empirical evidence can be obtained in the country making its implementation harder. To use a new method, experience from other practitioners is critical, which describes what is important, what is possible and what is not possible concerning Agile. We conducted a qualitative study to understand the issues faced by early adopters in Malaysia where Agile methods are still relatively new. The initial study involves 13 participants including project managers, CEOs, founders and software developers from seven organisations. Our study has shown that social and human aspects are important when using Agile methods. While technical aspects have always been considered to exist in software development, we found these factors to be less important when using Agile methods. The results obtained can serve as guidelines to practitioners in the country and the neighbouring regions

    Re-Arrest Among Juvenile Justice-Involved Youth: An Examination Of The Static And Dynamic Risk Factors

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the static and dynamic risk factors for re-arrest among detained youth by examining gender, race/ethnicity, age, special education and mental health variables (i.e., anger/irritability, depression/anxiety, somatic complaints, suicide ideation, thought disturbances, and traumatic experiences). The demographic profiles of detained youth with one admit were also compared with those with multiple admits to the juvenile detention center. With regards to static risk factors, older, white, and special education were significantly at risk of re-arrest. Concerning dynamic risk factors, only anger/irritability predicted re-arrest. Practice implications are also discussed

    Understanding the Occurrence of Errors in Process Models Based on Metrics

    Business process models play an important role for the management, design, and improvement of process organizations and process-aware information systems. Despite the extensive application of process modeling in practice, there are hardly empirical results available on quality aspects of process models. This paper aims to advance the understanding of this matter by analyzing the connection between formal errors (such as deadlocks) and a set of metrics that capture various structural and behavioral aspects of a process model. In particular, we discuss the theoretical connection between errors and metrics, and provide a comprehensive validation based on an extensive sample of EPC process models from practice. Furthermore, we investigate the capability of the metrics to predict errors in a second independent sample of models. The high explanatory power of the metrics has considerable consequences for the design of future modeling guidelines and modeling tools

    Design and Development of a Speech Intelligibility Test Based on Pseudowords in French: Why and How?

    International audiencePurpose: The current intelligibility tests performed on speakers with atypical speech production are limited by the ability of listeners to restore distorted sequences. This results in a measure that is overvalued when compared with the real articulatory performance. In this article, we present a new intelligibility test in order to neutralize the commonly encountered bias in traditional perception-based assessments. We present the construction of the acoustic-phonetic decoding task and its first test during a perceptual judgment test of intelligibility and during a result comparison with a global perceptual evaluation. Method: We developed a very large pseudoword directory including about 90,000 forms that respect French phonotactic constraints. From this directory, we have created lists of pseudowords intended to be recorded for the constitution of the corpus. These lists are established due to an algorithm integrating predefined linguistic constraints and produced by 47 speakers (nine healthy and 38 patients). We then performed a perceptual judgment of intelligibility test with 20 listeners who transcribed these productions. Results: At the end of the data processing stage, we obtained a Perceived Phonological Deviation (PPD) score for each speaker that reflects the average number of features altered per phoneme. We then compared the PPD score with a global intelligibility score derived from a global perceptual assessment of intelligibility and of the alteration severity. Conclusions: The current findings confirm that a speech intelligibility test based on pseudowords in French achieves fine-grained PPD scores, which enables discrimination between patients and healthy speakers. Moreover, the PPD score is related to the global intelligibility score, especially in severity. Further studies are needed to better understand the discrimination power of this intelligibility test based on an acoustic-phonetic decoding task
