Classical Geopolitics is a prime example for discussing the problematic relationship between the objectivity and neutrality of science since, being the last part of the positivist movement, it was deliberately not neutral, although it was still objective. Through a comparison of the two schools of thought of the leading exponents of Geopolitik and Italian geopolitics, Ernesto Massi and Karl Haushofer, it is possible to highlight the autonomous development and coherence of two possible responses through the use of the same interpretive approach. The comparison of the two diverse positions in the geopolitical discipline is finalized to formulate some considerations on the relationship between science and politics during the inter-war period with the goal of proving that geopolitics is a science that, though not politically neutral, remains objective, thereby revealing the limits of positivism. The teachings of classical geopolitics force us to consider the possibility of combining the objectivity of science with political involvement
THE ORDER OF THE SUBJECT: REFLECTIONS ON POSTMODERNISM STARTING
FROM SOME RECENT PUBLICATIONS. – The advent of the postmodernist shift has characterized
the last thirty years of geographic debate with a vast theoretical production that
has changed the familiar points of reference of the discipline. In particular, postmodernism
appeared as a solution to the hegemonic and homogenizing character of the
knowledge of the modern tradition. This paper will attempt to demonstrate that the objective
of postmodernism has not only not been reached but has been totally contradicted, bringing about by means of will that which modernity had already experienced as rationality.
In the first part some typical traits of postmodernism will be highlighted, mostly
taken from geographic literature or in any case of interest for geographers, which are assimilable
to a subjectivist prospective; the second part will demonstrate that the subjectivism
present in postmodernism is not a vague individualism, but rather the transcendent
modern subjectivism. Subjectivism, the theoretical key of modernity, shows itself to also
be the foundation of postmodernism, a denuncia of the contradiction generated. Given
the multiplicity of authors and sources linked to postmodernism it was decided to limit
the field of analysis to two papers by young Italian authors, which however cover a wide
ranging spectrum of analysis and are significant indicators of the attention being given by
the new generations to the relationship between geography and philosophy
Effective equilibrium picture in model with exponentially correlated noise
We study the effect of exponentially correlated noise on model in the
limit of small correlation time discussing the order-disorder transition in
mean-field and the topological transition in two dimensions. We map the steady
states of the non-equilibrium dynamics into an effective equilibrium theory. In
mean-field, the critical temperature increases with the noise correlation time
indicating that memory effects promote ordering. This finding is
confirmed by numerical simulations. The topological transition temperature in
two dimensions remains untouched. However, finite size effects induce a
crossover in the vortices proliferation that is confirmed by numerical
simulations
Effective potential method for active particles
We investigate the steady state properties of an active fluid modeled as an
assembly of soft repulsive spheres subjected to Gaussian colored noise. Such a
noise captures one of the salient aspects of active particles, namely the
persistence of their motion and determines a variety of novel features with
respect to familiar passive fluids. We show that within the so-called
multidimensional unified colored noise approximation, recently introduced in
the field of active matter, the model can be treated by methods similar to
those employed in the study of standard molecular fluids. The system shows a
tendency of the particles to aggregate even in the presence of purely repulsive
forces because the combined action of colored noise and interactions enhances
the the effective friction between nearby particles. We also discuss whether an
effective two-body potential approach, which would allow to employ methods
similar to those of density functional theory, is appropriate. The limits of
such an approximation are discussed.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures in Molecular Physics, 11 march 2016. arXiv admin

The effect of engine spin direction on the dynamics of powered two wheelers
The effect of engine spin direction on the dynamics of powered two wheelers is investigated in terms of steady-state points (equilibria), vibration modes (stability), manoeuvre time (performance/manoeuvrability) and handling. The goal is to assess and quantify the advantage sometimes claimed for the ‘counter-rotating’ engine configuration, where the engine spins in the opposite direction with respect to wheels, against the ‘conventional’ configuration, where the engine spins in the same direction of wheels
