One basic question has encouraged the present study: after all the effort, expectations and money often invested in deal making, why are M&A transactions simply abandoned, even when the benefits to the business, shareholders, customers and employees seem to be clear

Trust within the Organizations of the New Economy: an Empirical Analysis of the Consequences of Institutional Uncertainty

This study investigates the effects of different institutional frameworks on the levels of trust within hierarchies. Following the insight into the changing of labour contracts provided by New Economy theorists and International Labour Organization [ILO] reports, this study investigates the possible differences in the levels of trust between two paradigms: the Old Economy and the New Economy. We argue that singular institutional changes which better characterize the New Economy in the form of environmental uncertainty set considerable constrains on trust development. By approaching trust as a dependent variable in a cross-industrial comparison, a questionnaire survey was carried out in Brazil accessing the levels of trust within seven Brazilian private companies. From the literature review and empirical observation of the reality of these organizations, companies were identified and classified into different groups. The study concludes that relative high institutional uncertainty considerably limits the development of trust levels within those companies operating in the New Economy

Parameters estimate of Riemannian Gaussian distribution in the manifold of covariance matrices

International audienceThe study of P(m), the manifold of m x m symmetric positive definite matrices, has recently become widely popular in many engineering applications, like radar signal processing, mechanics , computer vision, image processing, and medical imaging. A large body of literature is devoted to the barycentre of a set of points in P(m) and the concept of barycentre has become essential to many applications and procedures, for instance classification of SPD matrices. However this concept is often used alone in order to define and characterize a set of points. Less attention is paid to the characterization of the shape of samples in the manifold, or to the definition of a probabilistic model, to represent the statistical variability of data in P(m). Here we consider Gaussian distributions and mixtures of Gaussian distributions on P(m). In particular we deal with parameter estimation of such distributions. This problem, while it is simple in the manifold P(2), becomes harder for higher dimensions, since there are some quantities involved whose analytic expression is difficult to derive. In this paper we introduce a smooth estimate of these quantities using convex cubic spline, and we show that in this case the parameters estimate is coherent with theoretical results. We also present some simulations and a real EEG data analysis

On the complexity of the boundary layer structure and aerosol vertical distribution in the coastal Mediterranean regions: A case study

The planetary boundary layer structure in the coastal areas, and particularly in complex orography regions such as the Mediterranean, is extremely intricate. In this study, we show the evolution of the planetary boundary layer based on in situ airborne measurements and ground-based remote sensing observations carried out during the MORE (Marine Ozone and Radiation Experiment) campaign in June 2010. The campaign was held in a rural coastal Mediterranean region in Southern Italy. The study focuses on the observations made on 17 June. Vertical profiles of meteorological parameters and aerosol size distribution were measured during two flights: in the morning and in the afternoon. Airborne observations were combined with ground-based LIDAR, SODAR, microwave and visible radiometer measurements, allowing a detailed description of the atmospheric vertical structure. The analysis was complemented with data from a regional atmospheric model run with horizontal resolutions of 12, 4 and 1 km, respectively; back-trajectories were calculated at these spatial resolutions. The observations show the simultaneous occurrence of dust transport, descent of mid-tropospheric air and sea breeze circulation on 17 June. Local pollution effects on the aerosol distribution, and a possible event of new particles formation were also observed. A large variability in the thermodynamical structure and aerosol distribution in the flight region, extending by approximately 30km along the coast, was found. Within this complex, environment-relevant differences in the back-trajectories calculated at different spatial resolutions are found, suggesting that the description of several dynamical processes, and in particular the sea breeze circulation, requires high-resolution meteorological analyses. The study also shows that the integration of different observational techniques is needed to describe these complex conditions; in particular, the availability of flights and their timing with respect to the occurring phenomena are crucial

Context Traumatic basal ganglia hemorrhage (TBGH) is a rare presentation of traumatic brain injury. Bilateral lesions are even rarer. Only twelve similar cases were previously published. Case report We report the case of a patient with bilateral TBGH. He was managed conservatively. Long-term follow-up disclosed a cognitive dysfunctions attributed to associated diffuse axonal injury. Acceleration and deceleration forces may have torn pallidum arterial branches determining hemorrhage. Conclusion Bilateral TBGH is an uncommon presentation of traumatic brain injury. Associated diffuse axonal injury worsens the outcome

RADICAL FORMATION ON CTMP FIBERS BY ARGON PLASMA TREATMENTS AND RELATED LIGNIN CHEMICAL CHANGES

    Get PDF
The changes at molecular level induced by cold argon plasma treat-ments on fibers obtained from chemi-thermo-mechanical pulp (CTMP) fibers were investigated. The radicals formed on CTMP fibers after treatments were identified and quantified by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The plasma conditions which maximize the formation of radicals on fibers were assessed: after treatment with 0.4 mbar Ar pressure and 75 W radiofrequency power, phenoxy radicals triple their concentration in only 60 s and reach a value 4 times higher than that reported for laccase-catalyzed lignin oxidation. It was found that in plasma-treated fibers, the formation of radicals competes with their coupling. This latter result leads to cross-linkages of the lignin mono-meric units and formation of new intermonomeric C-C and C-O bonds, for the first time assigned to specific molecular interactions through Heteronuclear Single Quantum Coherence (2D-HSQC) spectroscopy and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy of carbon (13C-NMR). These results were confirmed by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectros-copy of phosphorous (31P-NMR). The lack of evidences of inter-fiber bond interactions, deduced from Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) data, suggests the possible application of plasma treatments for the production of wood fiber-based composites

Aneurysm and Neurocysticercosis: Casual or Causal Relationship? Case Report and Review of the Literature

    Get PDF
Four cases of suggestive inflammatory aneurysms in patients with neurocysticercosis have been described. We report a case of a 49-year-old woman who presented with subarachnoid haemorrhage from a right middle cerebral artery bifurcation aneurysm and had a casual relationship with neurocysticercosis. At surgery, a viable cysticercus without signs of inflammation or thickened leptomeninges was found in the distal position of the aneurysm. Postoperatively, the patient received albendazole and dextrochlorpheniramine. In the subsequent three years, the patient was asymptomatic and took drugs to prevent convulsion and arterial hypertension. The relationship between NCC and the presence of cerebral aneurysm is discussed
