    Southern Italian wild boar population, hotspot of genetic diversity

    The wild boar, Sus scrofa, is an important game species widely distributed in Eurasia. Whereas the genetic variability of most European wild boar populations is well known, the status of wild boar living in Southern Italy is not as clear. We evaluated the present and past genetic diversity (D-loop, mtDNA) of the South Italian population, comparing it with that observed in other Mediterranean glacial refugia. Italian population showed highest genetic variability, if compared to other two European refugia (Iberian and Balkan). Most of samples from Italy carried sequences belonging to the European E1 haplogroup (80.9%) with a small proportion of the private Italian E2 (10.2%) and of the Asian (8.9%) ones. Italian samples carrying an Asian haplotype were genotyped by MC1R nuclear gene, failing to disclose a recent introgression from domestic pigs. Mismatch distribution analysis of the Italian population was affected by secondary contacts between these different lin- eages. This genetic melting pot was detected since the Mesolithic and the Neolithic age, during which we found samples belonging to the indigenous Italian and European haplogroups. Further, a Near-Eastern haplotype was found in 1,800 AD samples from Southern and Central Italy.     Theory of dressed states in quantum optics

    The dual Dyson series [M.Frasca, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 58}, 3439 (1998)], is used to develop a general perturbative method for the study of atom-field interaction in quantum optics. In fact, both Dyson series and its dual, through renormalization group methods to remove secular terms from the perturbation series, give the opportunity of a full study of the solution of the Schr\"{o}dinger equation in different ranges of the parameters of the given hamiltonian. In view of recent experiments with strong laser fields, this approach seems well-suited to give a clarification and an improvement of the applications of the dressed states as currently done through the eigenstates of the atom-field interaction, showing that these are just the leading order of the dual Dyson series when the Hamiltonian is expressed in the interaction picture. In order to exploit the method at the best, a study is accomplished of the well-known Jaynes-Cummings model in the rotating wave approximation, whose exact solution is known, comparing the perturbative solutions obtained by the Dyson series and its dual with the same approximations obtained by Taylor expanding the exact solution. Finally, a full perturbative study of high-order harmonic generation is given obtaining, through analytical expressions, a clear account of the power spectrum using a two-level model, even if the method can be successfully applied to a more general model that can account for ionization too. The analysis shows that to account for the power spectrum it is needed to go to first order in the perturbative analysis. The spectrum obtained gives a way to measure experimentally the shift of the energy levels of the atom interacting with the laser field by looking at the shifting of hyper-Raman lines.Comment: Revtex, 17 page

    Mucus detachment by host metalloprotease meprin \beta requires shedding of its inactive pro-form, which is abrogated by the pathogenic protease RgpB

    The host metalloprotease meprin β is required for mucin 2 (MUC2) cleavage, which drives intestinal mucus detachment and prevents bacterial overgrowth. To gain access to the cleavage site in MUC2, meprin β must be proteolytically shed from epithelial cells. Hence, regulation of meprin β shedding and activation is important for physiological and pathophysiological conditions. Here, we demonstrate that meprin β activation and shedding are mutually exclusive events. Employing ex vivo small intestinal organoid and cell culture experiments, we found that ADAM-mediated shedding is restricted to the inactive pro-form of meprin β and is completely inhibited upon its conversion to the active form at the cell surface. This strict regulation of meprin β activity can be overridden by pathogens, as demonstrated for the bacterial protease Arg-gingipain (RgpB). This secreted cysteine protease potently converts membrane-bound meprin β into its active form, impairing meprin β shedding and its function as a mucus-detaching protease
