    Local density of states in metal - topological superconductor hybrid systems

    We study by means of the recursive Green's function technique the local density-of-states of (finite and semi-infinite) multi-band spin-orbit coupled semiconducting nanowires in proximity to an s-wave superconductor and attached to normal-metal electrodes. When the nanowire is coupled to a normal electrode, the zero-energy peak, corresponding to the Majorana state in the topological phase, broadens with increasing transmission between the wire and the leads, eventually disappearing for ideal interfaces. Interestingly, for a finite transmission a peak is present also in the normal electrode, even though it has a smaller amplitude and broadens more rapidly with the strength of the coupling. Unpaired Majorana states can survive close to a topological phase transition even when the number of open channels (defined in the absence of superconductivity) is even. We finally study the Andreev-bound-state spectrum in superconductor-normal metal-superconductor junctions and find that in multi-band nanowires the distinction between topologically trivial and non-trivial systems based on the number of zero-energy crossings is preserved.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, published versio

    Recovery from repeated sudden hearing loss in a patient with Takayasu’s arteritis treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy: the first report in the literature

    Hearing loss has been rarely reported in Takayasu's arteritis, presents as sudden sensorineural hearing loss and usually responds well to corticosteroid therapy. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is commonly used as a supplementary treatment to corticosteroids for sudden hearing loss. We present the case of a woman with Takayasu's arteritis who had two episodes of hearing loss involving one ear at a time with a 11-month delay between each episode. During the first episode, the patient was treated with high-dose intramuscular corticosteroids with a temporary improvement of auditory threshold, that deteriorated close to previous level 14 days after cessation of therapy. In the second episode, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy was associated to corticosteroids, with a significant, longer term improvement in both ears, including the one that had shown to be unresponsive to previous pharmacologic therapy. Oxygen therapy could have played a role in hearing restoration in this patient, as it could have acted synergically with corticosteroids amplifying their effect

    NNLO Logarithmic Expansions and High Precision Determinations of the QCD background at the LHC: The case of the Z resonance

    New methods of solutions of the DGLAP equation and their implementation through NNLO in QCD are briefly reviewed. We organize the perturbative expansion that describes in xx-space the evolved parton distributions in terms of scale invariant functions, which are determined recursively, and logarithms of the ratio of the running couplings at the initial and final evolution scales. Resummed solutions are constructed within the same approach and involve logarithms of more complex functions, which are given in the non-singlet case. Differences in the evolution schemes are shown to be numerically sizeable and intrinsic to perturbation theory. We illustrate these points in the case of Drell-Yan lepton pair production near the Z resonance, analysis that can be extended to searches of extra Z′Z^{\prime}. We show that the reduction of the NNLO cross section compared to the NLO prediction may be attributed to the NNLO evolution.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures.     The Search for Extra Neutral Currents at the LHC: QCD and Anomalous Gauge Interactions

    Extensions of the Standard Model with extra neutral currents due to additional anomalous abelian gauge factors are considered. We summarize the main features of the effective action associated to these theories. They are characterized by an axion-like particle (the {\em axi-higgs}) which can be (almost) massless, with its mass generated non-perturbatively in the QCD vacuum as for an ordinary Peccei-Quinn axion, but that can also mix with the scalars of the Higgs sector, becoming a heavy axion. We briefly describe the interplay between the electroweak and the QCD sectors in these types of theories, which emerge either from special vacua of string/brane theory; from partial decoupling of a heavier fermion sector or from an anomaly inflow in the context of models with extra dimensions.Comment: Talk given at QCD@work 2007, Martina Franca, Italy, 16-20 June 2007, 5 pages, 2 figures.     Determination of the yield radius and yield stress in 2198-T3 aluminum alloy by means of the dual-scale instrumented indentation test

    A new dual-scale instrumented indentation test (DualS-IIT) methodology is here proposed to determine the yield stress (in a tensile-like sense). The methodology involves measuring the bulk yield radius, as defined by the expansion cavity model (ECM), induced by a Vickers macro-indentation in a medium plane cross-section. The bulk yield radius is measured by means of a subsurface nano-hardness survey along the load direction in correspondence to the transition interface between the hemispherical strain hardened region and the surrounding elastic region. The methodology has been applied to an Al–Li (A2198-T3) alloy and a yield stress of 297 MPa has been measured (in agreement with a tensile test); moreover, anomalous plastic deformation behaviour has appeared under indentation. The combination of macro- and nano-indentation tests in one single experiment, as in the proposed methodology, offers a unique experimental basis to directly correlate the mechanical properties of a material at two different scales, which at present is an open issue in the research on indentation

    A new light boson from MAGIC observations?

    Recent detection of blazar 3C279 by MAGIC has confirmed previous indications by H.E.S.S. that the Universe is more transparent to very-high-energy gamma rays than currently thought. This circumstance can be reconciled with observations of nearby blazars provided that photon oscillations into a very light Axion-Like Particle occur in extragalactic magnetic fields.     Progressive Dysphasic Dementia with Bucco-Facial Apraxia: A Case Report

    A patient with progressive dementia, prominent non-fluent aphasia and signs of frontal lobe involvement, was evaluated by neuropsychological testing, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and high resolution single photon emission tomography (SPET). The presence of severe bucco-facial apraxia, associated with spared imitation of limb movements, correlated well with a marked reduction of cerebral perfusion in the left fronto-temporal cortex. This case emphasizes the usefulness of SPET as a valuable alternative to PET for the diagnosis of conditions, such as progressive neuropsychological syndromes, where a coupled reduction of metabolism and blood flow can be expected

    Blockade and Counterflow Supercurrent in exciton-condensate Josephson junctions

    We demonstrate that perfect conversion between charged supercurrents in superconductors and neutral supercurrents in electron-hole pair condensates is possible via a new Andreev-like scattering mechanism. As a result, when two superconducting circuits are coupled through a bilayer exciton condensate, the superflow in both layers is drastically modified. Depending on the phase biases the supercurrents can be completely blocked or exhibit perfect drag.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
