Lamellar order, microphase structures and glassy phase in a field theoretic model for charged colloids

In this paper we present a detailed analytical study of the phase diagram and of the structural properties of a field theoretic model with a short-range attraction and a competing long-range screened repulsion. We provide a full derivation and expanded discussion and digression on results previously reported briefly in M. Tarzia and A. Coniglio, Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 075702 (2006). The model contains the essential features of the effective interaction potential among charged colloids in polymeric solutions. We employ the self-consistent Hartree approximation and a replica approach, and we show that varying the parameters of the repulsive potential and the temperature yields a phase coexistence, a lamellar and a glassy phase. Our results suggest that the cluster phase observed in charged colloids might be the signature of an underlying equilibrium lamellar phase, hidden on experimental time scales, and emphasize that the formation of microphase structures may play a prominent role in the process of colloidal gelation.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure

Inversions after und as a V1 Pattern in Middle High German: Information- and Discourse-Structural Aspects

This publication is with permission of the rights owner freely accessible due to an Alliance licence and a national licence (funded by the DFG, German Research Foundation) respectively. In the following paper, we claim that the so-calledInversionen nach undare instances of V1 clauses. Although these constructions are attested from Old High German to the 19th century, we focus on the Middle High German period. Our arguments are based upon information- and discourse-structural properties. These clauses share typical properties of V1 clauses, namely, the absence of a topic-comment division, their relevance for textual cohesion, the accessibility status of the subject, the lexical semantics of their predicate, and their expressivity.*Peer Reviewe

He then said..: Understudied deviations from V2 in Early Germanic

ABSTRACT This paper discusses a V3-pattern in Early Germanic that has so far not been considered independently. In this construction, a clause-initial XP is followed by the adverbial element OHG do/OE þa/OS tho (lit. ‘then’), which is directly followed by the finite verb. Based on a pilot study of the OHG translation of Tatian’s gospel harmony and the OE Blickling Homilies, it is shown that the pattern exhibits slightly different properties in OE and OHG. In OHG, the element preceding do is usually a pronominal shifting topic, while in OE, the clause-initial XP may also be a full DP that is either a shifting topic or a continuing topic. To account for these differences between OE and OHG, we argue that OE þa is first-merged as the head of a clause-medial projection that serves to mark the boundary between the topic and the focus domain. In contrast, OHG do (and OS tho) is a topic marker that is either part of the fronted shifting topic, or base-generated as a head in the left clausal periphery. As to its internal syntax, we propose a grammaticalization path for do/þa/tho in which a demonstrative adverb first turns into an adverbial discourse marker that may also serve expletive functions before it eventually grammaticalizes into the topic particle addressed in this paper

Knowledge, attitudes and practices towards patients with HIV/AIDS in staff nurses in one university hospital in Sicily

Background: nurses’ knowledge, attitudes and practices towards patients with HIV/AIDS are of ongoing interest, especially in developing countries. Nothing or very little is known about Italian nurses. Methods: HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes and behaviours of the nurses (n=107) from one university hospital inCatania,Sicily, were documented. Comparisons among nurses belonging to different Operative Units (O.U.) were conducted by the chi-square test (P<0.05). Results: although HIV was nurses’ main concern in regard to contracting infections in the workplace (54%), the vast majority of them (98%) had never refused an HIV/AIDS patient care assignment. Moreover, despite their concern of being more at risk of contracting HIV than the general population (41%), a not negligible percentage of nurses did not use gloves routinely (21%) and only a few treated all patients as potentially HIV-positive (9%). The vast majority of the respondents knew the meaning of AIDS (87%) and of a positive serological test (78%). On the contrary, a relatively low percentage of them knew what is the ‘window period’ (62%) and were acquainted with HIV pathophysiology (65%). No statistically significant differences in terms of risk perception were found between nurses who had previously attended an HIV/AIDS workshop, lecture or specific course (43%) and nurses who did not (57%). Level of knowledge was positively associated to age (P=0.000) and to education (P=0.016), and it was found higher in nurses working in a O.U. of Infectious Diseases. Conclusions: data from our study show that also in developed countries, such as Italy, nurses could have some misconceptions and concerns about HIV/AIDS. The importance of examining the impact of continuing education on nurses’ preparedness to care for patients with HIV/AIDS and to prevent the risks of occupational HIV transmission is discussed.&nbsp

Found the needle in the haystack! The case of a fishbone causing vasovagal syncopes and abdominal pain: a case report

Foreign body ingestion is a very common reason for access to the Emergency Department and in most cases, it doesn't cause symptoms; in case of fishbones, intestinal perforation is rare but possible. In this report, besides the typical picture of bowel perforation, we found atypical symptoms due to the specific location. We present a case of a 70-year-old man who presented to the Emergency Department complaining abdominal pain and several syncopes; a CT scan of the abdomen revealed the presence of a foreign body in the pyloric area, which was removed by surgical intervention and resulted to be a fishbone. Both abdominal and neurological symptoms disappeared. Results and conclusion We suppose that the specific location of fishbone, in the area when the pyloric branches of left vagus nerve run, can explain both the abdominal symptoms and the vasovagal syncope, through a sympathetic inhibition mechanism: Emergency physicians and emergency surgeons must be aware when dealing with symptoms apparently discordant that could be attributable to one common factor

Overall time evolution in phase-ordering kinetics

The phenomenology from the time of the quench to the asymptotic behavior in the phase-ordering kinetics of a system with conserved order parameter is investigated in the Bray-Humayun model and in the Cahn-Hilliard-Cook model. From the comparison of the structure factor in the two models the generic pattern of the overall time evolution, based on the sequence ``early linear - intermediate mean field - late asymptotic regime'' is extracted. It is found that the time duration of each of these regimes is strongly dependent on the wave vector and on the parameters of the quench, such as the amplitude of the initial fluctuations and the final equilibrium temperature. The rich and complex crossover phenomenology arising as these parameters are varied can be accounted for in a simple way through the structure of the solution of the Bray-Humayun model.Comment: RevTeX, 14 pages, 18 figures, to appear in Phys.
