    Chapter Nabladot Analysis of Hybrid Theories in International Relations

    Scientific research in International Relations has produced a growing corpus of empirically grounded formal theoretical models of phenomena ranging from deterrence to systemic polarity, from conditions of peace to the onset of war. Many of these important theories contain a mix of continuous and discrete dimensions, causal variables, and parameters. Analysis and understanding of this fundamental and intriguing class of theories containing functions with a mix of continuous and discrete variables has puzzled generations of social scientists and applied mathematicians. This challenging and longstanding puzzle now has a solution. Here we demonstrate how the recently created calculus with nabladot operators is beginning to uncover previously unknown properties of hybrid international phenomena. Results include new concepts and precise principles on causal relationships, previously unknown political features, and fundamental properties of probabilistic causality, demonstrated through nabladot analysis of international events, crisis dynamics, and warfare

    Sublinear Latency for Simplified Successive Cancellation Decoding of Polar Codes

    This work analyzes the latency of the simplified successive cancellation (SSC) decoding scheme for polar codes proposed by Alamdar-Yazdi and Kschischang. It is shown that, unlike conventional successive cancellation decoding, where latency is linear in the block length, the latency of SSC decoding is sublinear. More specifically, the latency of SSC decoding is O(N11/μ)O(N^{1-1/\mu}), where NN is the block length and μ\mu is the scaling exponent of the channel, which captures the speed of convergence of the rate to capacity. Numerical results demonstrate the tightness of the bound and show that most of the latency reduction arises from the parallel decoding of subcodes of rate 00 or 11.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, presented in part at ISIT 2020 and accepted in IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communication

    MULTI-AGENT INFRASTRUCTURES FOR OBJECTIVE AND SUBJECTIVE COORDINATION

    Coordination in MAS can be conceived as either an agent activity (the subjective viewpoint) or an activity over agents (the objective viewpoint). The two viewpoints have generated two diverging and often contrasting lines of research, as well as different and non-compatible technologies: however, their integration is mandatory for modelling and engineering complex MAS. In this paper, we explore the issue of integration at both the model and the technology levels. First, by taking FIPA agents and coordination artifacts as reference notions for subjective and objective approaches, respectively, we sketch a framework where agent interactions with coordination artifacts are modelled as physical acts, deliberated and executed by agents analogously to communicative actions. Then, we show how the JADE infrastructure for FIPA-compliant agents, and the TuCSoN infrastructure providing agents with coordination artifacts can be integrated at the technology level, allowing JADE agents to access TuCSoN tuple centres through JADE services

    Parallelism versus Latency in Simplified Successive-Cancellation Decoding of Polar Codes

    This paper characterizes the latency of the simplified successive-cancellation (SSC) decoding scheme for polar codes under hardware resource constraints. In particular, when the number of processing elements PP that can perform SSC decoding operations in parallel is limited, as is the case in practice, the latency of SSC decoding is O(N11/μ+NPlog2log2NP)O\left(N^{1-1/\mu}+\frac{N}{P}\log_2\log_2\frac{N}{P}\right), where NN is the block length of the code and μ\mu is the scaling exponent of the channel. Three direct consequences of this bound are presented. First, in a fully-parallel implementation where P=N2P=\frac{N}{2}, the latency of SSC decoding is O(N11/μ)O\left(N^{1-1/\mu}\right), which is sublinear in the block length. This recovers a result from our earlier work. Second, in a fully-serial implementation where P=1P=1, the latency of SSC decoding scales as O(Nlog2log2N)O\left(N\log_2\log_2 N\right). The multiplicative constant is also calculated: we show that the latency of SSC decoding when P=1P=1 is given by (2+o(1))Nlog2log2N\left(2+o(1)\right) N\log_2\log_2 N. Third, in a semi-parallel implementation, the smallest PP that gives the same latency as that of the fully-parallel implementation is P=N1/μP=N^{1/\mu}. The tightness of our bound on SSC decoding latency and the applicability of the foregoing results is validated through extensive simulations

    BACKGROUND: Existing literature shows that the use of Botox®/onabotulinumtoxinA (BT) in chronic migraine (CM) is promising from a cost-effectiveness standpoint and the use of a clinical diagnostic therapeutic process (CDTP) dedicated to CM allows a reduction of pathology costs. The inclusion of BT in chronic migraine therapy at a Roman ASL involves the need to investigate the real treatment costs of a CDTP and to measure how a targeted organizational CDTP strategy for CM allows insuring treatment accessibility, sustainability, and appropriateness.OBJECTIVE: To conduct a cost-effectiveness analysis of providing administration of BT in patients with CM using real world data from an ASL in Rome.METHODS: The real world cost data for approximately 215 anonymous patients were summarized. The cost data were extrapolated from the database of the ASL and they populated a Markov decision model developed by Allergan. The analysis is based on a decision model populated with real drug and service cost data, for the years 2010-2012. The financial assessment was conducted from the viewpoint of the Italian National Health Service.RESULTS: Over a 2 year temporal horizon, incremental BT costs, compared to a placebo, are equal to € 261 against an incremental gain of 0.0655 QALY in favor of BT. The ratio between costs and incremental QALY generates an ICER of 3,983 €/QALY, favorable and below the acceptability threshold used by many countries for reimbursement decisions (25,000-40,000 € per QALY gained).CONCLUSIONS: The inclusion of BT in the CDTP dedicated to CM of an Italian ASL improves both clinical outcomes of the patients and the allocation of the SSN available resources.[Article in Italian

    Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura presenting with syncope episodes when coughing

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura is a rarely encountered clinical entity which may have different clinical pictures. Although the majority of these neoplasms have a benign course, the malignant form has also been reported.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We herein describe a case of 72 year-old man with head, facial, and thoracic traumas caused by neurally-mediated situational syncope when coughing. The diagnostic work-up including chest x-ray, CT and PET, revealed a large solitary mass of the left hemithorax. Radical surgical resection of the mass was performed through a left lateral thoracotomy and completed with a wedge resection of the lingula. Hystological examination of the surgical specimen showed an encapsulated mass measuring 12 × 11.5 × 6 cm consistent with a solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura. It's surgical removal definitively resolved the neurologic manifestations. The patient had no postoperative complications. At two years follow-up the patient is free from recurrence and without clinical manifestations.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In our case its resection definitively resolved the episodes of situational syncope due, in our opinion, to the large thoracic mass compressing the phrenic nerve</p
