    Abstract The 73rd Conference of the Italian Thermal Machines Engineering Association (ATI) was held in Pisa (Italy) on September 12-14, 2018. The conference was organized by ATI and the University of Pisa. The main topic of this conference edition was: "Innovation and research for a sustainable energy future" In the last 10 years, the share of renewable sources in the energy mix of several countries has increased at a steady pace. This led to a revolution in the way energy conversion is conceived and distributed in comparison to a fossil based system. Nowadays, thinking about a 100% renewable energy system is no more just a dream. Nevertheless, the transition to this future implies several critical decisions from the technical and economic point of view. The 73rd ATI conference was the opportunity to discuss these topics, present new frontiers of the energy engineering research and promote the cooperation between researchers. The topics of the conference were: Heat Transfer and Fluid Dynamics, Energetics of Buildings, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Environmental Aspects of Energy Conversion, Renewable Energy, Advanced Energy Conversion and Storage Systems, Innovative Propulsion Systems and Internal Combustion Engines, Turbomachinery, Combustion and Fuels, Fluid Power. This issue of Energy Procedia includes all the papers presented at the conference, 143 in oral form and 20 in the poster session reserved to PhD students. The conference also included a plenary session and two panel sessions with outstanding keynote speakers from both academy and industry.     Cognitive analytics management of the customer lifetime value: an artificial neural network approach

    Purpose: The purpose of this study is to show that the use of CAM (cognitive analytics management) methodology is a valid tool to describe new technology implementations for businesses. Design/methodology/approach: Starting from a dataset of recipes, we were able to describe consumers through a variant of the RFM (recency, frequency and monetary value) model. It has been possible to categorize the customers into clusters and to measure their profitability thanks to the customer lifetime value (CLV). Findings: After comparing two machine learning algorithms, we found out that self-organizing map better classifies the customer base of the retailer. The algorithm was able to extract three clusters that were described as personas using the values of the customer lifetime value and the scores of the variant of the RFM model. Research limitations/implications: The results of this methodology are strictly applicable to the retailer which provided the data. Practical implications: Even though, this methodology can produce useful information for designing promotional strategies and improving the relationship between company and customers. Social implications: Customer segmentation is an essential part of the marketing process. Improving further segmentation methods allow even small and medium companies to effectively target customers to better deliver to society the value they offer.     GloNets: Globally Connected Neural Networks

    Deep learning architectures suffer from depth-related performance degradation, limiting the effective depth of neural networks. Approaches like ResNet are able to mitigate this, but they do not completely eliminate the problem. We introduce Globally Connected Neural Networks (GloNet), a novel architecture overcoming depth-related issues, designed to be superimposed on any model, enhancing its depth without increasing complexity or reducing performance. With GloNet, the network's head uniformly receives information from all parts of the network, regardless of their level of abstraction. This enables GloNet to self-regulate information flow during training, reducing the influence of less effective deeper layers, and allowing for stable training irrespective of network depth. This paper details GloNet's design, its theoretical basis, and a comparison with existing similar architectures. Experiments show GloNet's self-regulation ability and resilience to depth-related learning challenges, like performance degradation. Our findings suggest GloNet as a strong alternative to traditional architectures like ResNets

    Remineralization strategies in oral hygiene: a position paper of Italian Society of Oral Hygiene Sciences-S.I.S.I.O. working group

    Background/Objective: The clinical conditions that lead to an alteration of the enamel structure are numerous. The diet high in sugars and acidifying substances, psychological stress that triggers parafunctional behaviors, the reduced intake of fiber-rich foods or alkalizing substances, together with other factors, contribute to demineralization of the tooth enamel. Dental mineralizing products on the current market are distinguished according to the dosage form, the active ingredient, the release technology, clinical indications and patient choice. Currently, it is necessary to propose to oral health professionals a guide to orient themselves in this chaotic choice, in order to prefer the most effective product for their own clinical target. Methods: Italian Society of Oral Hygiene Sciences-S.I.S.I.O. is one of the leading scientific Italian societies representing those dental hygienists working with high-quality standards and in agreement with scientific evidence: in the last year, the SISIO working group has carried out a study focused on remineralizing agents in dentistry, in order to give an authoritative point of view to indicate a guideline in the decision process of the choice of a remineralizing agent. We will report the results pointed out from the last consensus meeting in 2017. Results: We have reported the good the bad and the ugly have been discussed in a critical discussion of such topic. Conclusion: The SISIO experience has been reported in this position paper with the aim to serve as a useful aid in the daily choice of the clinical steps to perform, when dental professionals need to treat demineralized teeth.     Effects of Vitamin D on insulin resistance and myosteatosis in diet-induced obese mice

    Epidemiological studies pointed out to a strong association between vitamin D deficiency and type 2 diabetes prevalence. However, the role of vitamin D supplementation in the skeletal muscle, a tissue that play a crucial role in the maintenance of glucose homeostasis, has been scarcely investigated so far. On this basis, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of vitamin D supplementation in a murine model of diet-induced insulin resistance with particular attention to the effects evoked on the skeletal muscle. Male C57BL/6J mice (n = 40) were fed with a control or a High Fat-High Sugar (HFHS) diet for 4 months. Subsets of animals were treated for 2 months with vitamin D (7 \u3bcg\ub7kg-1, i.p. three times/week). HFHS diet induced body weight increase, hyperglycemia and impaired glucose tolerance. HFHS animals showed an impaired insulin signaling and a marked fat accumulation in the skeletal muscle. Vitamin D reduced body weight and improved systemic glucose tolerance. In addition, vitamin D restored the impaired muscle insulin signaling and reverted myosteatosis evoked by the diet. These effects were associated to decreased activation of NF-\u3baB and lower levels of TNF-alpha. Consistently, a significantly decreased activation of the SCAP/SREBP lipogenic pathway and lower levels of CML protein adducts and RAGE expression were observed in skeletal muscle of animals treated with vitamin D. Collectively, these data indicate that vitamin D-induced selective inhibition of signaling pathways (including NF-\u3baB, SCAP/SREBP and CML/RAGE cascades) within the skeletal muscle significantly contributed to the beneficial effects of vitamin D supplementation against diet-induced metabolic derangements
