Diffractive, refractive and absorptive elements based on subwavelength periodic mettalic structures
Rozprawa doktorska pt "Elementy dyfrakcyjne, refrakcyjne i absorpcyjne oparte na
podfalowych periodycznych strukturach metalicznych" przygotowana przeze mnie w Zakładzie
Optyki Informacyjnej na Wydziale Fizyki UW dotyczy struktur fotonicznych zawierających
elementy metaliczne o rozmiarach charakterystycznych mniejszych od długości fali. Dla zakresu
optycznego będą to nanostruktury fotoniczne i plazmoniczne, podczas gdy dla zakresu
terahercowego badane były podfalowe siatki metalowe o różnej geometrii. Kluczowe wyniki
Finite Difference Time Domain Method).
Praca podzielona jest na sześć rozdziałów. Rozdział pierwszy zawiera wprowadzenie do
pracy, oraz formułuje jej zasadnicze tezy. W rozdziale drugim następuje wprowadzenie do
dziedziny pracy.
rozmiarach podfalowych przeznaczone do działania w różnych zakresach długości fali. Rozdział
trzeci poświęcony jest kształtowaniu fal elektromagnetycznych w zakresie THz. Prezentowane są
dwa rodzaje struktur.
optycznego. Zaprezentowane wyniki wskazują jednak na możliwość konstrukcji jednokierunkowej
soczewki dyfrakcyjnej dla promieniowania THz z wykorzystaniem przedstawionego układu.
Rozdziały czwarty i piąty dotyczą wyników symulacji prowadzonych dla długości fali z
zakresu widzialnego.
The doctoral thesis entitled: ‘Diffractive, refractive and absorptive elements based on subwavelength
periodic metallic structures’ prepared by myself at the Information Optics Department
of the University of Warsaw’s Faculty of Physics relates to photonic structures containing metallic
elements with the characteristic lengthscale smaller than the wavelength. For the optical range those
shall be the photonic and plafsmofnic nanostructures, whilst for the terahertz range sub-wavelength
metal gratings of various geometries were studied. The key results refer to one-way transmission of
electromagnetic radiation from the THz range, as well as the properties of meta-materials built of
multi-layers described using the effective medium theory model. For both the visible radiation
range and THz, the structures were analysed using electromagnetic modelling, mainly with the
Finite Difference Time Domain Method (FDTD).
The thesis is divided into six chapters. The first one contains an introduction and formulates
its primary theses. In the second chapter there is an introduction into the researched field. It
discusses the numerical methods used, terms related to the linear time-invariant systems as well as
material dispersion models and effective medium approximation.
The next part of the paper is based on the author’s original works analysing sub-wavelength
sized systems intended for operating within various wavelength ranges. The third chapter discusses
the shaping of electromagnetic waves within the THz range. Two types of structures are presented.
The first one is used as an electromagnetic radiation antenna placed on detector based on a field
transistor. Using the mechanism of exciting waveguide modes in the dielectric base, it is possible to
bring about electromagnetic radiation from a large area of the antenna to the detector and to
increase its effectiveness by doing so. The second one suggests the possibility of achieving
asymmetrical transmission through systems based on two consecutive diffractive grating. The
asymmetry of transmission complies with Lorenz’s principle of reciprocity, therefore it cannot be
used to construct a typical optical insulator. However, the presented results indicate the possibility
of constructing one-way diffractive lens for THz radiation with the use of the system presented.
Chapters four and five refer to the simulation results carried out for the visible range
wavelength. In chapter four, a proposal for the construction of a meta-material is presented which
performs the functions of a perfectly matched layer. It contains the numerical calculation results for
the multi-layer described using literature data on the dispersion of selected materials. It also
presents the results of electromagnetic simulations for structures in flat as well as in cylindrical
geometry in which the described structures are of core-shell type.
In chapter five, the thesis discusses non-diffractive light propagation through metallicdielectric
multi-layers. It presents the possibilities of structure optimization as well as potential
applications for carrying out geometrical operations (e.g. projecting) on light beams significantly
smaller than wavelength. The further simulation results are related to verification of the possibility
of experimental usage of systems of such type, especially focusing on the requirements on the layer
surface smoothness.
Chapter six is a summary. Within this chapter, there are references to the paper’s theses and
previous chapters which indicate they have been proven
Multilayer metamaterial absorbers inspired by perfectly matched layers
We derive periodic multilayer absorbers with effective uniaxial properties
similar to perfectly matched layers (PML). This approximate representation of
PML is based on the effective medium theory and we call it an effective medium
PML (EM-PML). We compare the spatial reflection spectrum of the layered
absorbers to that of a PML material and demonstrate that after neglecting gain
and magnetic properties, the absorber remains functional. This opens a route to
create electromagnetic absorbers for real and not only numerical applications
and as an example we introduce a layered absorber for the wavelength of
~m made of SiO and NaCl. We also show that similar cylindrical
core-shell nanostructures derived from flat multilayers also exhibit very good
absorptive and reflective properties despite the different geometry
Comparison of reorganized versus unaltered cardiology departments during the COVID-19 era: a subanalysis of the COV-HF-SIRIO 6 study
Background: Since the beginning of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, numerous cardiology departments were reorganized to provide care for COVID-19 patients. We aimed to compare the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on hospital admissions and in-hospital mortality in reorganized vs. unaltered cardiology departments. Methods: The present subanalysis is a multicenter retrospective COV-HF-SIRIO 6 study that includes all patients (n = 101,433) hospitalized in 24 cardiology departments in Poland between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2020, with a focus on patients with acute heart failure (AHF). Results: Reduction of all-cause hospitalizations was 50.6% vs. 21.3% for reorganized vs. unaltered cardiology departments in 2020 vs. 2019, respectively (p < 0.0001). Considering AHF alone respective reductions by 46.5% and 15.2% were registered (p < 0.0001). A higher percentage of patients was brought in by ambulance to reorganized vs. unaltered cardiology departments (51.7% vs. 34.6%; p < 0.0001) alongside with a lower rate of self-referrals (45.7% vs. 58.4%; p < 0.0001). The rate of all-cause in-hospital mortality in AHF patients was higher in reorganized than unaltered cardiology departments (10.9% vs. 6.4%; p < 0.0001). After the exclusion of patients with concomitant COVID-19, the mortality rates did not differ significantly (6.9% vs. 6.4%; p = 0.55). Conclusions: In cardiology departments reorganized to provide care for COVID-19 patients vs. unaltered ones, observed: i) a greater reduction in hospital admissions in 2020 vs. 2019; ii) higher rates of patients brought by ambulance and lower rates of self-referrals; and iii) higher all-cause in-hospital mortality for AHF due to COVID-19 related deaths
Original paper<br>The managed health care study for screening and early detection of colorectal cancer in Lodz urban population
The quality improvement initiative was undertaken in parallel with prospective studies on the incidence and frequency of colorectal cancer (CRC) in urban population of Lodz, Poland. The study was conducted in four primary care providers with the support of academic medical institutions. The study population included the citizens of Lodz, both genders, aged 45 to 65. The study was divided in two stages; each conducted consecutively in 2003 and 2004. This prospective, two stage study included 3152 patients. After positive serial guaiac-based fecal occult blood tests, high CRC odds ratio based on per rectum examination and the standardized questionnaire data 47.8% out of 1648 and 18.9% out of 1504 initially enrolled patients were enrolled into the extended diagnostic stage of the study within the consecutive years, respectively. CRC was found in 0.9% and 0.54% patients, respectively and the diagnosis of CRC was confirmed with histopathological tests. Colorectal diseases other than CRC were found in 23.1% and 11.2% of the study subjects, respectively. It is crucial to design and implement follow-up studies for those among our study subjects at high risk of CRC who finished the current study even without an unfavourable diagnosis or risk rating
