The Effects of Recent Relative Price Movements on the Canadian Economy

Although the standard of living of Canadians has improved as a result of terms-of-trade gains created by the sharp rise in real commodity prices over the past five years or so, the commodity-price increase, combined with an exchange rate appreciation and real income gain, triggered structural adjustments by altering underlying economic incentives. The frictions generated in adjusting to the relative price shock have likely contributed to hold back aggregate productivity growth. Dupuis and Marcil examine the structural adjustments that have been required-in particular, the resource reallocation among the different sectors of the economy-and its effects on employment, output, and productivity, as well as the responses of final domestic demand and external trade flows.

pp-adic zeta integrals on unitary groups via Bushnell-Kutzko types

In this paper, we compute certain $p$-adic zeta integrals appearing in the doubling method of Garrett and Piatetski-Shapiro-Rallis for unitary groups. Using structure theorems in the author's work arXiv:2310.09110 for $P$-(anti-)ordinary automorphic representations involving Bushnell-Kutzko types, we associate local Siegel-Weil sections at $p$ to such Bushnell-Kutzko types. Then, fixing compatible choices of $P$-anti-ordinary vectors, we find explicit formulae relating the corresponding $p$-adic zeta integral to modified $p$-Euler factors and volumes of $P$-Iwahoric subgroups. Our results extend the ones of Eischen, Harris, Li and Skinner for the ordinary setting by allowing automorphic representations with nontrivial supercuspidal support at $p$.Comment: 31 pages. L’héritage cartésien : l’égalité épistémique

Le mot célèbre de Descartes sur le bon sens a fait l’objet de commentaires antithétiques mettant en évidence soit son ironie (c’est l’interprétation dominante), soit son démocratisme. Les philosophes du sens commun avaient néanmoins entrevu une autre interprétation qui mettait l’accent sur le concept d’égalité épistémique et son rapport à la méthode. À la lumière du texte même du Discours de la Méthode, il est montré que la thèse de l’ironie interprète à contre-sens la distinction cartésienne entre l’égalité des raisons et l’égalité des esprits, dans la mesure où c’est pour avoir consenti à l’élitisme épistémologique combattu par Descartes que l’homme de bon sens peut en venir à douter de l’universalité de la raison.Descartes’ well-known saying on good sense has been commented in two antithetical perspectives, one emphasizing its irony (this is the dominant interpretation), the other, its democratism. Common sense philosophers have already offered an alternative reading, focussing on the concept of epistemic equality and its relationship to the Cartesian method. On the basis of the Discours de la Méthode itself, it is shown that the allegation of irony counterfeits Descartes’ distinction between the equality of reasons and the equality of minds, to the extent that it is in consenting to the epistemological elitism rejected by Descartes that men of good sense could be lead to doubting the universality of human reason
