Jelen tanulmányunkban arra a kérdésre keressük a választ, hogy az 1927-ben meginduló Magyar Szemle cikkei mennyiben segítették vagy rontották a társadalom reális helyzetfelismerésének képességét, figyelembe véve természetesen azt, hogy az olvasóközönségét a társadalomnak nem túl népes szelete, - Szekfű szavaival élve – a középosztálybeli intelligencia egy része jelentette, ám ennek az intelligenciának (a rendszer jellegéből, a társadalom hatalmi viszonyaiból adódóan) nagyon fontos szerepe volt a társadalom tudatformálásában

Grant proposal for a study on moral development of deaf children

This proposal is a request for financial support to study the moral development of deaf and hearing children. The project has two foci; the first is on analyzing various existing biases in Kohlberg\u27s moral development stage theory and research methodology; the second is on understanding better the impact of communication parent-child and culture on moral development on deaf and hearing children. Five different groups of children who will be interviewed and studied: deaf children of deaf parents fluent in American Sign Language (ASL), deaf children of hearing parents where at least one parent is a fluent signer, deaf children of hearing parents where no parent signs, hearing children of deaf parents fluent in ASL, and hearing children of hearing parents. The findings will allow educators, parents, psychologists, researchers, and counselors to increase awareness, sensitivity, and knowledge regarding the biases in Kohlberg\u27s theory and the effects of communication and culture on the moral reasoning skills of deaf and hearing children

“Science is not my thing”: Exploring deaf non-science majors’ science identities

Students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing are underrepresented in science majors, yet we know little about why. Students from other underrepresented groups in science—women and people of color—tend to highly value altruistic or communal career goals, while perceiving science as uncommunal. Research suggests that holding stereotypical conceptions about scientists and perceptions of science as uncommunal may strongly hinder recruitment into science majors. This study sought to explore the science identities of students who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing signers. The study focused on non-science majors in bilingual (American Sign Language and written English) biology laboratory courses. This study is the first step to understanding if stereotypes about scientists and perceptions of science as uncommunal disproportionately affect students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing. Findings suggest that students’ science identities are influenced by stereotypical portrayals of scientists and a preference for people-centered careers, specifically within the Deaf community. Applied research is needed to challenge stereotypes, and identify connections between science and the Deaf community, to support the growth of deaf and hard-of-hearing students’ science identities to increase participation in science careers
