Reuse of Treated Wastewater in Metal-Mechanics Industry: A Technical-Economic Evaluation

    Get PDF
Metal-mechanical industries are intensive in the consumption of water and, consequently, in the wastewaters production. Thus, reuse is essential because it preserves the environmental resources, diminishing the water footprint of the obtained products. Despite the advanced techniques, the economic cost limits the wastewater treatment to the most common techniques. This study evaluated the technical potential and costs involved in the reuse of wastewater in a metal-mechanical industry. Mistakes were found in the reagents dosage, what precluded reuse of the treated wastewater. The optimum condition for coagulation/flocculation was evaluated using the bench scale jar test. The parameters of wastewater, such as turbidity, pH, alkalinity, hardness, electrical conductivity, chloride and total solids were evaluated. The ideal condition was tested at the plant and some adjustments were made. The improvements resulted in 50.96% cost reduction of wastewater treatment without new investments. Also, the treatment became faster and more efficient. The wastewater achieved the standards for reuse in toilet flushing and floor washing.

Essential oil from leaves of Cryptocarya mandioccana Meisner (Lauraceae): Composition and intraspecific chemical variability

    No full text
The composition of the essential oil from leaves of Cryptocarya mandioccana has been determined by chromatographic fractionation and GC-FID, GC-MS and C-13 NMR analyses, yielding the identification of 64 compounds with predominance of isomeric sesquiterpenes with molecular weights of 204. The main components of the oil obtained by hydrodistillation were beta-caryophyllene, spathulenol, caryophyllene oxide, delta-cadinene, germacrene D, benzaldehyde and bicyclogermacrene. However, the oil obtained by steam distillation contained higher levels of sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, with predominance of P-caryophyllene (C), germacrene D (G) and bicyclogermacrene (B), and was considered to be more representative of the composition of the oil in its natural state. The intraspecific chemical variability of the essential oil obtained by steam distillation was evaluated within populations of trees growing at three separate locations in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Three distinct chemical groups could be characterised due to differences in the relative percentages of the three main sesquiterpenes from essential oil: CGB [relative contents of C (14-34%), G (5-28%), B (8-15%)], BCG [B (17-34%), C (9-24%), G (12-25%)] and GCB [G (22-42%), C (4-17%), B (7-15%)]. Individuals from groups CGB and BCG were found to be more frequent at south locations while group GCB is predominant in north location. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Cryptomoschatone D2 from Cryptocarya mandioccana: cytotoxicity against human cervical carcinoma cell lines

Among the substances isolated from Cryptocarya sp, some styrylpyrones, such as goniothalamin, demonstrate antiproliferative activity in a broad range of human cell lines. In the present study, we assessed the cytotoxicity of a styrylpyrone (cryptomoschatone D2), isolated from Cryptocarya mandiocanna, in HPV-infected (HeLa and SiHa) and uninfected (C33A) human cervical carcinoma cell lines and a human lung fibroblast line (MRC-5). The cytotoxicity was tested by the MTT assay. In this assay, cells were treated with cryptomoschatone D2 at 15, 30, 60 or 90 μM for 6, 24 or 48 hours, as well as for 6 hours followed by a post-treatment recovery period of 24, 48 or 72 hours. High cytotoxicity (dose- and timedependent) was observed in HeLa, SiHa, C33A and MRC-5 cell lines. Although in general the styrylpyrone cytotoxicity was not significantly different among the cell lines tested, it was apparently stronger in HeLa and C33A than in MRC-5 and SiHa in the 24 or 48-hour treatments. Moreover, HeLa and SiHa were able to recover their ability to proliferate, in direct proportion to the post-treatment recovery time. On the other hand, C33A did not demonstrate a similar post-treatment recovery. We can conclude that cryptomoschatone D2 possesses high dose-dependent or time-dependent cytotoxicity. Atividade antiproliferativa.
